  1. Okay, I am the OP.

I posted this and then had to run to work, so I've slowly been making my way through all the (very interesting) replies. But before I go any further, I just want to say a couple things.

    1) My husband thinks I am not a good wife, and tells me so.

    2) The reason he thinks this? I don't support his work enough or show enough of an interest. I am self-centered. I don't get up early, which is his best time. I don't pay attenytion to certain things around the house, like the pool filter, the plants that need watering (mostly the bigger 'maintenance' type issues--I am great with laundry, kitchen, vacuum etc). I am not appreciative.

    Okay, off to read more.

    Lots of hugs...

  2. I see your point about the economic bubble. I agree.

What we are seeing now is a knee-jerk reaction (which are never well-aimed) towards STEM as the Savior of the USA Economy, and I think that is a grave error.

A STEM talented child who receives a liberal education in grades 1-12 will be well-equipped (academically, mentally, emotionally) and highly motivated to chase their dreams in college. We truly are not lacking kids who can pass calc & physics. We are lacking young people who are motivated to follow a life's passion, any passion. Like you said, it's easier to make $ with a business degree.

ETA: I should note that when I say liberal education, I mean one that includes STEM as part of a well-rounded education. Shakespeare and Physics are not mutually exclusive.

My husband for example (although I curse him in another post) has a liberal art degree with a engingineer PhD . So I do believe it can be achieved. A balanced liberal art and engineer. ( maybe a extra course of how to be a good husband) . And I agree with you we need to have kids with passion for science not just a kid can pass the tesr . And that come with both what u born with and what you are surrounded with. And I believe the government is trying to do the 2nd. Make it cool, so kids want to Be a scientist.

  3. I didn't read the article. But as an engineer, I saw the danger of not focus on STEM. The economic bubble are all focusd on none product , service type of jobs.. The bank, the housing market.. . In university, you see the engineer major kids switch to business because it is soooo much easier and make more money... And the consequence was the bubble. I do blaim the past few year encomic down turn were due to the non stem focus, I am very happy to see the focus switch to STEM. Yes, I undertsand that not every kid can be a STEM major. But do you remember when US send the human to the moon. That was the time that there are so many talent people attracted to STEM... Because they think stem is COOL! Not money. And they Were VERY GOOD. So I believe there are many kids are STEM talented now and they need the " stem is cool" motivation to go into the path.

  5. We moved 2x for jobs. Both time we had about same

    - mover. They pack and move.

    - temerapary storage .. We had an year waiting for house to be built

    - they pay few months rental, can't remember how much

    - selling old house. They paid agent fee and all closing cost

    - buying new house, they paid all closing cost

    - one house hunting trip for entire family.

    - the moving trip. Airfare and 2 cars

I think that is about it. It is taxable, the company did cover the tax part but it still put us in a bracket higher,

There was no negotiation for us. It is what was offered with the offere letter. I assume that was pretty standard. Both time were with good size company. Play your card wisely. Ask around people work similar job what is offered.

  6. $50,000 is on the high end of normal to me. My school, a regional state school, cost around $19,000 to attend (incuding room and board and tuition and fees). MU costs about $25k / year, then take a look at the fees. If you go into engineering or health care those PER CREDIT HOUR fees increase dramatically. My school has those too, not quite that high though.

Washington University's published cost per year is $60k.

I kind of lose my breath thinking about school actually being advertised as that much per year (true cost of attendance is another topic altogether), but yes, if my school, the second cheapest in the state, is $19k/ year, I don't see $50k as totally ridiculous either.

Ann Arbor , that got to be univ Michigan. They do have fantastic engineering program. They are known to charge extra extra for out of state. By.. If she has the freedom to choose UM instead Berkeley or UCLa.. I think she is richer than she gave herself credit for.. North face an't cheap brand either
  7. Yes, I think things will look different according to district. In ours, the tracks have been maintained, but the percentage of students in each have changed. Up until now, the very advanced would take Algebra in 7th grade, may be even in 6th. If you placed proficient or advanced in math at the end of 5th grade, you were slated for Algebra in 8th grade. Now, students will be placed on the Algebra 1 in 8th grade track only if they have scored at the gifted level for math at the end of 5th grade. Everybody else, i. e. the majority, will be on track for 9th grade Algebra. A few exceptionally advanced students will be placed in 7th grade Algebra.

I do not know if this has anything to do with the new graduation requirement. At least in NY. Previously, ny require a 60 in the regent test to graduate, now with the common core, our district is saying the requirement will be 85. (Not sure when the requirement will starts) Maybe they tightening up the requirement for acceleration to make sure kids can graduate? My DS is in PS and they have 1 accelerated math class between 2 elementary schools... Roughly 10%. Will be on track for algebra in 8th grade Right now we only know my DS and another boy will do double acceleration next school year ( that will lead them to algebra in 7th) so that is very selective few

  8. Is that form 7? DS tested 2 years ago and will again this year but they only gave percentile. I heard for our district, it is 97 percentile to qualify. They do test at 3rd grade and again 4th if a kid did not qualify at the 3rd grade entry point. And all kids will take test again in 5th for middle school gifted program. Some kids who were not qualified at 3rd grade entry later qualify at 4th grade. So the score does get improve the 2nd time they do the test. So, maybe try again next year.

Also cogat does not test IQ. From what I heard, it is more a academic achievement than iq test..

  9. We are going January 5th-11th. We went during January previously right after new year and found the park pretty dead. Weather forecast right now says it will be 70s -80s. Supposed that is a good time to go.

If you are palnning to go to Disney. Try their YES program. My kids gonna do animal behavior and it saves us 200 bucks on tickets.

  10. I am so sorry,... But the same time think your hospital are trying really hard to keep everybody safe. You know the flu vaccine this year aren't working so great.

Wish you the best. Hugs, kisses and prayers for your family

  11. A example of a question frustrated her...

Peter has 2 times as money as Joe, joes has 40 more than Emily, together they have 300.

She freed Emily as 1 unit, draw Joe as 1 unit with 40 extra, and then she draw Peter as 2 unit same size as Joe, but 2 unit, not 2 a unit with 80 extra. So she take 40 off 300 and then divided by 4. when I pointed to her that peter's unit is not same size as Emily size, she got very frustrated to see it

I am not trying to skip all together, but thinking skip those question I know she will have problem. Usually, 2 person problem or simple 3 person, .. Have the question says Emily has 20 more than Joe, she will have no problem.. I don't know why .... and those proble,, some boy get on the bus and some girl off the bus , now girl is few times more ... Usually she get 80% drawing done right, but she definitely can't get all correct without help,, and that process helping her become frustrated for both of us..

Maybe it will be better to go back those later on... Sigh... We had few diffcult lessons, she got really frustrated, I got frustrated and say things I should not... I do not want that happen ever again..

  12. DD6 is working on SM 5 along with cWp and IP... Past few weeks we are stucked with word questions. She usually is quite good with the bar. But she has huge problem with problem involve 3 people , this person is less than that and that have few time more than the other. She got very confused even with bar. When DS wen through it, it was much smoother but he was also a bit older, I never had a second thought on those type question back then, but with DD has difficulty, I wonder are those question necessary for elementary math? Once they learn algebra, those will be a piece of cake. DS is in PS 5th grade And 6th Honor math, he never has a question like those in his school math... Should I, can I skip those? Or should I introduce algebra?

  13. I don't think US has one across the country. But in NY, we have NYSMMA that is a leveled exam. It has 6 level from voice to piano to string. Requirement is a solo , scale and sight read. Level 1-4 gives a max score of 28 and level 5-6 give a max score of 100. Senior on level 6 NYSMMA has a oppurrunity to participate a all state which is a pretty big thing for kids want to be music major. There is no age restriction on level.

Piano is March, this year violin 1-4 is March and 5-6 is in May.

  14. You are fighting 2 things. 1. He is a boy 2. He is learning to read.

My Son is a advanced reader, and he didn't have much interests to read til he hit level 5 books. That is really when stories got interesting for him.

Take your boy to library often. Let him choose the book, even it is hard for him. Find funny readers. . Walton the pig, Amelia bedelia are really funny. Those hold my kids intersts more. Find topic that he is interested.
