Honestly, that sounds like what I do, for the most part. I mean, she's made it on the table twice, but immediately been taken off. She's always taken off or made to sit if she stands on a chair (she is allowed to sit on them). She is never out of my eyesight. She is told no and removed every single time, as I've done with all of them. But I honestly think they all just outgrew it, I don't think I was successful. I'm not always in arms length though...sometimes I'm up to my arm pits in laundry/dishwater/raw food and it takes a second to get her. Maybe I just have obstinate children...given my own nature that's possible.

Yes, but she has a climber downstairs that she redirects to. The behavior can't be extinguished, only redirected to a more appropriate place. I let mine climb the bunk bed ladder. Up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down.

  2. I am only an occasional runner. I have a lot of joint pain and problems.

Barefoot shoes made it possible for me to be able to walk at all when my foot pain was crippling.

I have pretty much only worn soft shoes for 20 years. I rarely have foot pain now.

    Running barefoot is totally different.

Minimal shoes are great for most things, but obviously not appropriate for everything. I have worn mine up a rocky desert mountain trail. It was not great. That's one occasion I prefer a more solid shoe.

  3. Also-this has been big for me - dress for the weather.

Skirts are cooler than pants. Cotton dresses without a waistband are least sticky.  Find shorts or capris at a length that is comfortable for you. Avoid layers. Choose natural fibers or wicking fabrics. Loose fitting, lightweight garments release heat. Try wearing a bikini instead of undergarments. I find this much cooler and more comfortable and gives you a breezy, summery feel.

  4. We are facing a got summer in a place known for got summers. I am compiling a list of places to go to get out of the heat and our of the house.

Pools. Lap swim, water fitness classes, family swim.

Libraries. Summer reading programs include crafts, readings, classes, music, and events for kids and adults.

Harkins and Celebrity theaters have summer movie programs for $5 or less.

Museums. Great places to spend time for children and adults.

Gym. Some gyms offer a monthly contract. Walk the treadmill, take a yoga class, do some gentle lifting.

Parks and rec. So many classes to learn something new.

You may want to get a 2nd opinion on your speech services. A 3yo should be 75% intelligible to strangers, and your dc isn't even that percentage intelligible to you. ?

Personally, I'd be wondering about motor planning (apraxia) given that intelligibility is the issue. And for apraxia, you're looking for someone well-trained in PROMPT.

What is PROMPT? How do I access it?

She is progressing, but IMO very slowly and she just has a long way to go. She just had a progress report, and she'll have another in the fall. I'm not opposed to getting additional private services for her, especially over the summer.

Apraxia is definitely a possibility. She's had other delays in the past. Any suggestions where to begin?

ETA: She measured 60% intelligible at her last screening.

  6. Luna is a chatterbox, as most 3yos are. But her speech is so hard to understand. I spend an immense amount of mental energy just trying to decipher her speech. She's very demanding. I'm so exhausted from it I want to cry for both of us. She's generally good-natured and compliant with me. If I can figure out what she's saying.

It also seems she relates to her brothers exclusively in screams.

She's on summer break from speech therapy. She's seen the audiologist. She's waiting on referral to ENT for a mild hearing problem. She no longer qualifies for other therapies.

Aside from taking breaks from her (which, you know, I do what I can), any advice for us?

Whattttt???? The Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer has 20 % zinc oxide! lol I had never heard of this brand. Thank you! Is the Umbra Sheer what you use?

Yes. It was recommended to me at Sephora to use as a face cream and moisturizer. I don't use any kind of foundation or face powder. I didn't even know it was sunblock until I finished the sample and went to order more. Don't use the tinted one. It's awful.

I prefer Alba though. It's cheaper and much more moisturizing.

I'm not sure if it will help the OP, but I'm having this problem at 50.  I've been trying to get more active (cycling, dance classes, etc.) which doesn't agree much with a connective tissue disorder.  I've been to PT which helped, but what helped the most is when he taught me to use Kinesio Tape.  It was only slipping one direction, and I've learned how to use the tape to keep it in place.  It's so much better than the bulky brace.

I just wanted to mention it for others with milder cases that might be reading this thread...

Oh yeah! Kinesio tape is wonderful. I used it for fallen arches, my knees, plantar faciitis, heel spurs, shin splints.

Huh! I have a kid who has had a couple patella subluxations. I had no idea it could keep happening (or get worse - eek!). Those of you who have a brace, did you buy it over-the-counter or is it some special doctor thing? (If over-the-counter, can you link the type?)
She's not overly active in terms of sports and such, but it would be nice to have something to help it happening when she is doing lots of physical activity (like running around the playground, even).

What little I read said exercising your inner thigh muscles is supposed to help. Anyone know if that is true? If so, Dr. Hive, do you have recommended exercises?

I've had maybe 20 braces over the years. Most were otc. The best was prescribed.

6years of thigh exercises did nothing for me. Surgery was the only  thing that   helped. Now I limit my activities because the next stop on this train is a knee replacement. I want to put it off as long as possible.

  10. Luna appears to be profoundly color blind. She is also visually impaired-though corrected physically, some of her visual processing is wonky- and speech delayed. She cannot identify any colors correctly in speech or sign. She says that light colored crayons "don't work". She can do some matching, but cannot choose the correct color if we tell her to. And she's a girl.

It doesn't sound like this is OP's child's problem, but it can and does happen.

  11. so.. I did a little catfishing in my early teens-pre internet. It was harder then.

This feels like a test post. When you want to do some serious trolling, you can't just jump right in with crazy drama. Everyone can smell that, and no one cares about you yet.

You start with some innocuous questions first about some mundane stuff. If you aren't too overly narcissistic, you respond to everyone else's post. You build those fake relationships and fill out our character(s).  Then, once you have everyone's interest, you start dropping weirder and weirder stuff.

I have been on forums that had class A trolls. One was getting herself invited to people's homes to help with their babies. She was a convicted child abuser with MBP. Another spent at least a year building her (?) persona before dropping the hammer with a wild medical story. A third scammed people for money with tales of lost and stolen wheelchairs, evictions, herself and children going hungry, etc.

  12. I'm sorry. Do you have satellite now?

We have satellite. It's expensive and not the highest quality, but it's plenty for me. We can stream multiple devices. D isn't super thrilled because he can't use it for all the nerdy gamer stuff.

We live in the desert, so no weather problems. We couldn't do it in a wetter place.

I think Our Only Other Option Is To Use a data plan through cell phone towers. I'm not sure how that works, but it is expensive and the coverage is not so good.

  13. For mine, treatment by a GI specialist has been a huge change. For him, it was definitely a series of physical difficulties that effected his ability to function.

Adjusting my reactions and expectations, and acknowledging that his behavior really is out of his control (he can't change his personality or his illness) has made a big difference in our relationship. He's still difficult, but he's more compliant and less devious now.
