  1. I'm writing from Nashville, TN and I have a single friend who recently adopted a teen girl from Moldova. She has been in the states for about 4 months, knew some English when she came over and is currently attending an English immersion class. My friend would like to have her daughter tested to see where she is so that she can best know how to place her and help her. The girl is quite bright and has a tremendous hunger and appreciation for the opportunity to learn. The mom will not be homeschooling, but plans to supplement her school learning with tutors and work at home as needed to support her. Any recommendations for tests that she should look into? Where should she look for outside tutors? I'm new to homeschooling myself and knew you guys are a tremendous source of information. Thank you in advance for any suggestions that you may have for me to pass along to her.
  2. What a great idea! Can I just say that I love homeschooling? I love that we can plan a trip like this and I can tailor our learning around this special adventure! Keep the tips coming! Love them!
  3. This is what I was wondering. I have a lot of research to do and very little time to do it! I'm not interested in making this the vacation everyone hated!! Dh is very excited about the idea. I'm kind of wishing we could wait and do it in a couple of years when the girls are older.
  4. Smashvegas is home for us! Surely there are more....
  5. My sister-in-law owns a condo in Scottsdale and she's invited us to go use it whenever we want. (Love you, Barbara!) We're looking at May thanks to Southwest flights. I have 3 girls ages 10, 7 and 5. We plan to make the Grand Canyon the big focus, so I know that will involve a drive. Anyone out there who can make recommendations about the "must dos" for a very quick trip (working around dh's work schedule)? I haven't had a chance to do any research yet. Hoping you amazing women can make recommendations for me so I know where to start and place my focus. Someone said something about pack horses....which has my 10 year old excited beyond measure. Do they do that??? Ok, go! Share whatever you like and know that I'll be very grateful! :bigear:
  6. Yes, Pegasus....please post the comparison!
  7. Sandy--when you say you have asked for a room on Friday....is that just for us boarders to meet each other...or is it for the group to get separate time with Jessie? I'm assuming you meant just for us, but wanted to clarify. This will be my first trip to Cincy and my second convention. I'm much more prepared for this convention and you guys have shared some good insights for the first timers here.
  8. Thanks to all of you who posted. I appreciate the process of all that there is to consider. To clarify...I wasn't looking for "history for girls", I only meant to let you know who it is that is learning at home. Sorry to confuse. I guess at this point I'm looking at SOTW in combo with the history portion of MFW CTG. I've got lots to learn. My girls thing it's hilarious that I'll be learning with them!!
  9. I'm a first year homeschooler with 3 little girls. Currently using MFW ECC, which overall has been good for me to get me started. Looking forward, I'm trying to determine what to do next. History was NOT my strong suit in school. I prepped for tests and went on my way. My husband is very gifted in history, which is a bit intimidating to me. I'm needing something that I can use and impart to my girls while learning the info for the first time myself! I feel ill equipped to compare curriculums and can't tell if one is more historically accurate than another. I'd like to narrow it down to 1-3 options that I can bring to my husband to get his input. I hope to involve him a lot in our history since he is a wealth of knowledge. I admit some hesitance doing MFW CTG because ECC has seemed somewhat disjointed to me....though I really love the idea of MFW and the recommended reading have been good. Those of you who know history...which curricula are most historically accurate and still presented in a fashion that elementary children will be able to process and hopefully retain and ENJOY the info? Thank you in advance for you input.
