  1. I'm glad I found this thread, as I am considering purchasing Art Reed's DVD's to use with 7/6 next year. I have several questions if you all will humor me. :) So does he teach the Saxon lesson using the examples out of the book, or does he teach the concept using his own examples? Does he use the same method that the book uses, or does he teach different ways to get the same answers? What is the average length of a lesson, and do dc watch the DVD before reading the lesson? Do you know if he's planning on coming out with a set for 6/5? Thanks!
  2. Okay all of you really smart Classical ladies ;) , I don't post over here too often, but I'd like your opinions regarding LA... Will I be short-changing my children's education using PLL/ILL for LA? Is it REALLY okay to wait for diagramming and such until 7th/8th grade? I am having a hard time letting go of the public school mind-set, but I am really drawn to these two books. I plan to supplement writing with Susan Bradrick's Understanding Writing no matter what LA program we choose, and most likely we'll be using MFW for everything else. Thanks!! :D
  3. I'm specifically contemplating 3rd grade. Would love to hear about your experiences and what you love/hate about it. Also, anybody here use it with the CLP teacher guide instead of the Abeka TM? Thanks!
  4. Thank you so much! These look great, and I will definitely use them. We just received a big order of Burgess books from Dover today, including Mother West Wind!
  5. Thanks to everyone for taking time to give such thorough responses! I appreciate it so much. Decisions, decisions....
  6. After much discussion with dh, we have decided to switch from Saxon after this year when we finish up Saxon 3 - at least until higher level Jr. High/High School math, and then we will revisit whether or not to return to Saxon. For now, it is really turning off my 8yo ds to math. I think the problem is mainly in the presentation; it just isn't appealing to him at this point. For now I am leaning toward CLE, but Singapore is still in the back of my mind. I have a few questions hopefully you can help me with. 1) Does Singapore cover enough about U.S. units of measure and U.S. currency? 2) I have read that Singapore starts off gentle enough, but rapidly progresses to quite challenging topics by about 4th/5th grade. Do you find that your students are able to comprehend and keep up that pace? 3) Is there enough drill and review? 4) I have read that some parents add a special word problem book or other extra workbooks (I believe published by Singapore??). Do you add any of this "extra" stuff? 5) About how long do you spend on Math each day using Singapore? 6) And by chance, have any of you ever used both CLE and Singapore? Which one do you like better and why? Thanks!
  7. This will be a hard decision. Seems they both have their pros and cons... I appreciate your comments. HiddenJewel, I'm going to check out that composition link you posted. What do the rest of you use for a writing program along side CLE? Thanks!
  8. Hi all! I'm a new to posting on this board. I've lurked on and off for the past year or so, but I really had a hard time following the threads with the format of the old board. But I have to say these new boards are great!!!:D I am wondering if some of you can help me compare/contrast R&S English and CLE language. I currently use R&S English with my 2nd grade ds, and he does like it. However, I think the main reason he likes it is because I have been allowing him to do almost all of it orally. He really does not like having to write. I do plan on making him write much more next year, and I can hear the balking already! So I'm thinking the workbook format of CLE would be a nice compromise. Also, as much as I appreciate the way R&S teaches concepts, I'm thinking it would be nice to have more of a spiral program to get more review throughout the year. We are a pretty academically minded family, so having a rock solid program is important to us. I know R&S English has a reputation for being a very solid and thorough English program, but I haven't really heard much about CLE's Language. How does the scope and sequence compare, and do you think it includes enough writing instruction and practice? TIA and glad to be here!
