  1. Maybe every school is different. Not here though. Not where I live. We live where the schools are top ranked, but rankings are based on test scores and such. And those test scores have little to do with what the schools are doing. Many parents pay a lot of money for tutors and spend a lot of time educating their children outside of school. A child's success depends on the work the parents put in, 100%. There is nothing a child whose parents are not involved can do to be successful in school. And if your parents do not have lots of money to pay the bills for school, then you will be out too.

:iagree: I am realizing that this is true...I have a very close friend who homeschooled her kids until high school, and now they are going to high school...They are VERY well off financially, and her kids are doing well in school, but she has private tutors, private classes, and all sorts of things we could never afford...Even when her kids were homeschooled they were taught by others in private classes and learning centers...She is very involved and pay a lot for her kids education...My kids would not have the same outcome because we have much less money...It may be sad to say, but we are doing the best that we can at home and I know that my kids education will not rival my friend's kids because we simply cannot afford it...Hopefully the lessons they are learning here goes beyond mere academics, if not we are all in trouble

On the flip side, my parents were not involved AT ALL in my education growing up, and I did not do nearly as well as I could have...

  2. :grouphug: I am homeschooling three boys, one of which is very difficult...He has always been homeschooled, so I am not sure what it would be like if he were in school...Judging from what happens when he is in social situations in sports or at church, I don't think going to school would improve things for him...

There are PLENTY of times where I want to send him to school and keep the other two at home...What stops me from doing that is the fact that I don't believe that is what is best for him, it is just what I "feel" like doing...What keeps me going and helps me when the going gets rough is just thinking to myself that I need to do what is best for him, not what would help me to feel better in the moment...

I am not a permissive parent and I hold my ground with him...I love him and let him know what I expect from him on a daily basis, and what will happen if he does not comply and I follow through...I do this with all of the boys, though the other two are not nearly as combative and it is not usually and issue with them...I think in advance about what needs to be done and what will happen if it is not done...I have to do this to try and cut down on the times where I am frustrated and mad and can't think clearly about what needs to be done next...I do get mad and lose my temper more than I want to, but I am working on that

When I say that I let him know what I expect and what will happen next, I mean stuff like, "You can go outside to play or move on to free time after the work for today is done"...He will sometimes say, "I am not doing that", or "There is no way I am doing this math today" to which I will reply, "Your choice, but you will not come down for lunch, or go outside to play until it is done"...He will end up doing it, sometimes at the last minute, other times while we are already eating...Sometimes he will follow me around, constantly saying what he wants or what he is not doing...I just repeat myself and ignore him...This may sound harsh to some here, but it is how I am able to get things done with him...If I let him, he would run our house, and that is simply not an option...

Another thing that helps is we greatly reduce the amount of media in our home - we have no TV or gaming system...I can see the difference in his behavior when he watches too much on the laptop, or plays too much with someone's phone, etc...Not having to battle over TV and video games helps a lot...

All this to say that it is difficult, but I honestly believe having him in school and then coming home after being allowed to do whatever all day with the influence of so many others would be worse in the end...He would probably be put in special needs classes and not given the care or attention he needs...He has some great qualities that I want him to see and develop, and some not so great ones that I would love to see him struggle through and work on, just like the rest of us here...I have no plans to send him to school...

  3. I am wondering about how long it takes your 7th or 8th grade students to read a book such as The Hobbit or Treasure Island?...How long would you expect to spend reading and covering one book?...This of course is in addition to the reading your child does for other subjects...

    Thanks so much in advance...

  4. I was wondering why avatars seemed to be changing...I didn't hear about this...It is hard for me to recognize people because I know everyone by their avatar :-)

I don't think any Orthodox person would be upset about their icon being used as an avatar, and who else would complain?...I am sure I am missing something, so please bear with me :-0

  5. I am YE and my children are scientifically literate.  DS23 has a minor in biology from Harvard (he's still YE too!) and is in a PhD program in computational biology.  DS19 is studying chemistry at Princeton.   I am not a big Ken Hamm fan or anything, but I find the assertion that anyone who is YE is an uneducated nut-job very insulting.

I am not a fan of Ken Ham and I wouldn't consider myself YE or OE (I never even heard of those terms before joining this forum), but I definitely agree that belief in YE doesn't make someone uneducated or some kind of fool...

  6. We bought a GE microwave about 4 months ago and I absolutely love it.  It has "Express Cook" which mean with one touch (meaning I don't have to touch the start button too) I can hit a 30 second button to heat something up.  If I think it needs to go longer, I can hit it again and it will add another 30 seconds to it before it stops.  If 30 seconds is too long, you can always stop it too to shorten the time.  I use this feature all the time.  You can also do Express Cook with the regular numbers, so for example if I hit the number 5, it will cook for 5 minutes.  It has "Sensor Cooking" buttons which I have used for "Popcorn", "Potatoes", and "Vegetables".  I think the vegetables button will also ask you if it is frozen or fresh so the time is adjusted for cooking.  All have cooked perfectly.  It also will remind you if you left something in the microwave and forgot to get it out.  It's not annoying in that way, it dings and scrolls a message across saying something like "Food is ready".  I've used the defrost successfully as well.  This microwave is my favorite of the 4 or 5 I've owned.  I'm sorry I couldn't find a model number on it.  The salesman told me there are really only two companies who make microwaves and they just put their own name on it.

Yes, this is the same thing we have most likely...It is the GE Profile...I hardly ever use it, but it does what is described above and everyone else loves it...

GE Profile are my favorite appliances...

  7. The one they sell at Whole Foods called "Whole Paws"...It clumps great, is non toxic, doesn't have a strong smell but still masks odors, and cost less than $7 for 14 pounds of it...I tried several of the others and like this best...

  8. I went to a small "magnet" high school that you had to apply to and get accepted to attend...It was a public school that only accepted 125 freshmen and did not add any students the following years...If you did not maintain a certain grade point average you were expelled and had to attend whatever high school was in your district...I lived in the inner city (the ghetto), so my district school was not a place I wanted to be...I never thought about dropping out of school ever...No one in my school dropped out; it just wasn't an option anyone considered I guess...Our class got smaller every year though, and I ended up graduating in a class of 54...

I am an outgoing, social person and I did not enjoy high school at all...I did not enjoy the social aspects, the school work, nothing...I had a few friends that I enjoyed seeing, but other than that, I was not happy there...I can still remember things that negatively impacted my life from being in high school...

I don't know if it was a horror house, but it wasn't a fun house either...
