I think by most people's standards here my conversion was rather quick, though it seemed like forever to me...I first heard of the Orthodox church in April of 2013, went to my first liturgy in May of the same year and decided I wanted to become Orthodox a couple of weeks later...My husband was not on board...We met at my old church and were both heavily involved there...He had no interest in learning about anything else...Doctrine was very important to both of us (the only reason either of us would choose any church), and he felt the doctrine at our old church was sound...Once I realized that the Orthodox church was the original one, that was it for me...Though I realize many people would advise against my next choice, I decided to attend the Orthodox church without my family...I told my husband I no longer agreed with what was taught at our church and could no longer attend services there with a clear conscious...He was very upset and said I was ruining our family...I was sad and it was very difficult, but in my mind, God comes before a husband, kids, or a family...To make a long story a little shorter, my oldest son started attending with me after a couple of months...My husband started to ask me questions and then started to look into Orthodoxy...He knew I took going to church seriously, and that I had no problems in our other church and he wondered why I would switch churches that way, and why my oldest who was very against me going stated that he wanted to become Orthodox...My husband didn't tell me he was reading about Orthodoxy until later...My entire family (husband and kids) were baptized Orthodox in April 2014, so one year later...
That was a difficult year emotionally, but we are all so grateful to be Orthodox that it was worth it...I am so grateful to God for allowing me that glimpse of Orthodoxy - it has truly changed our lives...
You will find your way, and you will be thankful for it...

I am going to be doing this book with my 9th grader...It has a very different format than the grammar stage poetry book, not for 3rd graders I would think...I have the book upstairs and can answer more questions if you have them...I have to run out now ;-)

Our parish is doing it this year...Sometimes in the morning and sometimes in the evening...I have a CD of women singing the entire service and it is very lovely...

I really am sorry for the loss of your dog...You will miss her regardless of her soul not being eternal...A loss in this world is still felt as such...
Hugs for you...

I had never even heard of YEC before joining the WTM forum...I don't know anyone in real life who is not on this forum that knows what that is either...

Do all of the tests have to be mailed to someone?...Is there anything that can be done and graded at home?
-
Is there an assessment test that can be taken at home just for evaluation purposes?...I would like to give a test to my upcoming 9th grader, but I am not sure where to buy one from...I am looking to assess math, spelling and reading comprehension mainly...
Any advice would be appreciated!

Welcome!...I also really liked the "Orthodoxy and Heterodoxy" podcasts...I listened to them when I was inquiring as well and it was very helpful...I highly recommend it to anyone who will listen to it 😉

Wow, you all are great! Thanks. I'm torn between a separate book for each subject and just using one until it's full...we could do one for all in a different color for each kid...they could decorate the cover and include dates within that book...a TOC that lists included books maybe.
Keep the ideas coming! This is all really helpful! :)
We use the plain notebooks and color code by kid...My oldest has all navy blue books, my middle son has all red books, and my youngest has all yellow books...We know right away who a book belongs to...I buy pretty, decorative ones for myself :-)

Another vote for Memoria Press, but I wouldn't feel compelled to start with the grade level my child is in...It is perfectly fine to choose a lower level if that is what is best for the child...My 10 year old will be doing much of the third grade core in the fall even though he will be in the 5th grade...

Why when I first read the title, I thought someone was "lost in Los Angeles" :-)

Book one comes before book two...It says it is written with first graders in mind to let people know that they can use it with a student as young as first grade, because many people delay cursive instruction...You can use it with someone older than first...Don't start with book two without doing book one first...

After using Veritas Press for 11 years, I suggest Memoria Press.
I am curious now too...I have never heard someone say they used something for 11 years and then recommend something else...

All of the instruction in Prima Latina and Latina Christiana is in the TM, not the student book. The program is much more than vocab lists and exercises, which is all that is in the student book. I don't know how a person could use either program without at least the TM (I found the DVD's vital since they contain so much more information and explanation than the TM's).

The Memoria Press versions of the books have beautiful illustrations in them, but the text reads the same as the Greenleaf or the free versions...MP reformatted the books, but the text is the same...You should be able to use another version of the text, as the guides are clear about which stories they are referring to...
I would say the books are good for middle school, 4th-8th grades...

We use Spelling Workout and I like it, with a little modification...It has a section that asks children to choose the correct spelling from a list of misspelled words...We skip that part of every week because I don't like them looking at misspelled words...It is more beneficial in my opinion to see the word spelled correctly whenever you encounter it...Better for the memory...
We do both phonics and spelling, so I agree that they are different and can be done together...

We don't have a TV, so no one watches it...We got rid of it a little over ten years ago...
-
It sounds like too much to me...I would not do R&S English, IEW, and BJU...
-
I would definitely start with Prima Latina for that age...Personally, I would start with Prima for anyone in the 4th grade or below with no Latin experience...It reinforces grammar and is a good starting point...

Now you guys have me curious about what the praises are...We are planning to do Chreia/Maxim during this upcoming school year, but I haven't seen it yet...Can someone give an example of what is meant by "the praises"?...What do you disagree with?
