  1. When we moved to NY, I was soooo nervous about the regs. They really have turned out to be no. big. deal.  I get a little annoyed when I do my paperwork, but it's really pretty quick once I get going.

AND I have a pretty good relationship with my district. (knocks on wood)

I agree with the recommendation to check out NYHEN. The yahoo group is very helpful with questions and has many MANY samples of people's IHIPs and quarterlies to look at.  Seeing another mom's paperwork when we first moved here TRULY put my mind at ease.

In terms of hours, I put "225+" on every quarterly. No problems.

  2. I've used levels 1, 3, 4, and 5  of Climbing to Good English. Your plan should be fine. You may want to skip the writing chapters in CTGE 4 if you're doing IEW with your 4th grader or perhaps just abbreviate them. My kids and I became burnt out on the type and format of CTGE but it really is a solid and complete program. AND the price is right. They are happily using CLE LA right now, but for what it's worth I think the writing instruction in CTGE is far superior to CLE's.

  3. Thank goodness. Did they give you a long enough time period?

If not already, give him probiotics and florastor, two hours apart from the abx. Lots of fluids.

    Glad you caught it early!

The doctor wrote a script for only 3 weeks. They did blood work (that I assume will show nothing at this point). We go back in a week. I'll discuss extending the antibiotics then. We had SO many people looking at ds, today. I'm guessing their isn't a lot of experience with lyme because the first few people who looked at him gave us the, "Oh, no. It's DEFINITELY not lyme. . .but we don't know what it is. Let me consult with Doctor A(B)©" Until Doctor C finally says to treat ds for lyme and that all lyme rashes don't look exactly the same. DS DOES have a bullseye but the rings are not as strongly defined as the typical internet picture.

I don't know what florastor is but I'll ask about it when we go back out for probiotics.

  4. Blah! It is NOT as conspicuously a bull's eye as many pictures of rashes I've seen but there is definitely a small area in the middle that is darker that the rest of it. I hate going to the doctor's office. I'm so hopeful they'll just give him the full course of antibiotics without me needing to pitch a tantrum. :(

I will definitely get some pictures once he eats his breakfast.

And I'm going to be paranoid now that every ache and pain is from lyme. His jaw hurts this morning. . .so of course I'm being paranoid and freaking out about that too.

  5. My 7 year old has felt miserably tired all day. I had just figured he'd played too hard outside yesterday.  At bedtime I noticed he was feverish, so I started doing the crazy panic tick check and found and rash on his left side. It is red, circular and slightly more red in the center.

We have a crazy amount of ticks around here. This spring I was pulling ticks off my kids daily. It seemed to slow down though as we got into the summer. I do remember pulling a tick off him a few weeks ago but it was on his right side and not embedded just attached. Still, the stupid things are so small that it would be easy to mistake one for a tiny scab or just miss it entirely.

Double ugh. Obviously we'll be walking in to our doctor's office tomorrow morning. What should I expect? Are they going to just give him antibiotics or run tests first?

I hate living in the woods. I hate living in the woods. I hate living in the woods.

  6. Hello!

My dd8 just finished 2nd grade. Last year we started by doing FLL2 and WWE2 and eventually I just got burnt out from forcing dd8 to do narrations. We switched to Growing with Grammar, but I don't think it engaged her brain enough-she just whipped through it without really processing it.

We did our state required standardized testing this Spring and she came back as weak in language arts. There were many things on the test we hadn't really covered including roots/prefixes/suffixes.

My friend recommended CLE Language Arts and so this past month we have been working on the 200 Level. It covers the material we have missed, but a lot of it is based on phonics rules they assume the child has already mastered in the 100 Level. DD is a strong reader, but she can't recite phonics rules so I feel that this isn't serving her well either.

Where do I go from here? I want a strong language arts program that is really comprehensive. I am not big on lots of narration. I need it to cover topics that are going to show up on standardized tests. I don't need spelling as we are doing Apples and Pears and that seems to actually be working for DD.

Thank you for all your help and wisdom!!!

State required testing in 2nd grade?? Man, I thought our state was strict and we only need every other starting in 4th.

CLE Language Arts would be pretty comprehensive (you can skip the spelling easily). Abeka would be another option. Both of those programs are very STRONG in grammar and tend to yield good standardized test scores.

Many around here rave about Rod and Staff as well. It is a thorough program, but I'll admit it brought my son to tears.

If you decide you don't want to continue with WWE, I would still recommend that you continue doing narrations from your other subjects. It may seem like a pain, but it is worth it in the long run.

  7. We actually had the opposite experience and prefer EIW's instruction. IEW left mine confused and frustrated, whereas Essentials gave him the needed tools to be confident and got him to use more description in his writing. I compared our experience with each in this post. Here's a review I did the first year we used it (we have used levels 7-10, and I have 11 ready to go for DD this year).

This post was very helpful. Or rather, now I have no clue which program I'm going to choose. ;)

  8. I let my DD decide which she would prefer.  She hated Pudewa's voice and told me it would drive her crazy.  However she liked EIW very much.  So that's what we went with.  We'll be using it along with WWS1 and ELTL for 7th this fall.

Well, that's interesting. I've heard people complain about his voice, but honestly, I don't get it. I've heard him before and the tone of his voice didn't cross my mind. Perhaps I should have the kids listen and see what they say.

I've heard the same kind of complaints about Jim Weiss's voice, but he is a celebrity at my house.

  9. We use CLE LA also, but I found there wasn't a lot of writing in 6 and 7.

I'm noticing this. The grammar instruction is solid, but I thought there'd be more writing in the level he's at. The fact that EIW is significantly cheaper doesn't hurt.  I've even considered WWS1. Writing is MY weak area to so all this stuff makes my brain melt. I'd rather teach Algebra.

  10. What sort of writing instruction have you already done with this child, if any, and how did they respond? Do they have any weak areas? Areas of strength?

He's done a few years of CTGE and a few years of CLE language arts with some written narrations and free writes along the way.  He's definitely a math/science/left brained child. Writing isn't particularly enjoyable for him even though his grammar and spelling is quite good.  He thrives with explicit instruction and does NOT do well with more open ended assignments.

  11. My first two children would sit and have their schooltime with NO problems at age 5.

Child number 3 (a boy) was a different story. He'd fidget and wiggle and complain and want to do ANYTHING else. I did keep at it (although with 5-10 minute increments not lengthy sessions) with him and he gave me grief through it until about 6 1/2. Something clicked in him and we don't have the same issues at. all. Now he just wants to hurry up and finish everything as quickly as possible so he can go and get dirty.

In retrospect, I don't know if anything was gained by slugging through all those months. It certainly didn't hurt him though.

  12. If you had to choose either IEW or Essentials in Writing for an 8th grader, which would you choose and why?

I've got this upcoming year covered. This should our last ridiculously difficult year with my twins (please, LORD!!), so I think we'll be able to handle branching out a bit more after that.

I've looked at samples for the both of these programs and think the instructors both look engaging.

  13. I hate to have a large home.  I can't begin to tell you how much I dislike our current abode simply because it's twice as big as the largest house I would ever care to have.  I prefer 200 sq ft per person and can stand 300 per person.  After that I begin to go crazy.  Also, I never ever want more than two bathrooms again.

So for our family of 5, 1000 sq ft and 1.5 or 2 bathrooms is perfect. And I am moving to that in 2 months. :)

200 sp ft per person sounds plenty to me. 1200 sq ft is the figure I would throw out there. 3 bedrooms and 1 1/2 baths (so a bathroom can still be used while the shower is in use) would be my ideal.  My house now is almost 2000 ft and it's overwhelming to me. I LIKE small spaces. I LIKE less stuff. I prefer small kitchens to bigger ones and I'd love purging things until we comfortably fit in a smaller house. That would be my dream.

My dream house also would be nowhere near the boonies like my current house is. I miss suburbia desperately.

  14. We already use it for math, and I have considered switching from R&S to CLE for LA.  Like someone mentioned on the math thread, I worry about workbook overkill, which is funny since I actually use workbooks for spelling and handwriting already.  (R&S and Pentime) But there's something about using the same type of workbooks for both math and LA that I worry my kids will balk at.

How does that look for those of you that use CLE for more than one subject?

You're already using workbooks for handwriting and spelling, so you'd actually be REDUCING the amount of workbooks as the LA has English/spelling/handwriting combined.

If you're concerned using multiple CLE subjects would frustrate your kids, why not try a LA lu for each and give it a go. Not much wasted for trying.

  15. My older kids actually like the CLE subjects they've used more than anything else they've ever done. So, your mileage may vary. They like knowing what to expect, the consistent length of lessons, and getting it done so they can move on with their day to bake, craft, play legos, build stuff in the garage etc. Using multiple CLE subjects hasn't been an issue.

  16. Okay, so the workbook is for use PRIOR to November (or whenever they do their challenge).

I like the idea of letting the kids set their own goals or even just spend a certain amount of time on it per day.

I think my next step needs to be to download the workbook and get eyes on it.

This just sounds like such a FUN project to do that would give a sense of accomplishment.

  17. How have you or do you plan to incorporate this into your school year with your kids?

How did you set word count goals etc? (<----this would be the most difficult part for me)

Was it a positive experience for you/your child?

    Would you do it again?

I have one child that LOVES to write fiction, but has a hard time finishing a piece. She also writes poetry like nobody's business. Writing is definitely where her strengths are. I'm considering giving this a go with her and maybe my oldest as well, just because.

  18. I figured I would chime in with what we did for my son this year in 7th...and what worked and what didn't...

Saxon 8/7- HATED it, huge colossal fail.

Saxon Alg 1/2- LOVED it and doing fantastically.

What made the difference between 8/7 being a fail and Alg 1/2 being a success? Was 8/7 too easy? The steps to take before Alg 1 in Saxon confuse me. (8/7 vs the Alg 1/2)
