  1. my dd is in 7th grade but is having so much trouble with spelling, writing, handwriting, etc. (yes she has some learning disabilities). we have been doing dictation for a few weeks now and i can already see an improvement except for one problem, she hates it! im reading a few sentences from a book (like 3 to 4 max) and she just totally hates it. im thinking with knowing how her mind works and the way she reacts to schoolwork that if i had ab actual dictation "book" with something along the lines of daily lessons that it may be easier for her to tolerate. i was thinking of something that maybe had sentences or sayings from classic books (like alice in wonderland, etc)

does anything like this exist? anything at all? thanks!

  2. About 3 months ago i started really working with my upcoming 9th grader on writing. She loves to write creatively and had written a few songs and stories. I thought this was a subject i could teach without a curriculum, at least for now, but it seems like we are just buttong heads and now she groans when its time for writing. She has slways been an independent learner, i had her the books and she does them only asking me if she needs help. But since i am teaching AND correcting her work, its just so not working out for either of us.

Any ideas of what to do??? Im thinking she needs writing to be done without me, but not sure what. Then theres still the correcting part of it that shes nor going to like. Money is a factor, funds are tight for us. Any ideas? Thanks!!!

  3. Is there a way to type in the title of a book and find out of it has " inappropriate " content?? Dd is almost 14 and she loves picking up books at the library or book store ans when i read the covers i' m constantly saying im not sure if im ok with you reading that! She is so fed up with me saying that with almost ever book she finds in the young adult section that shes starting to not want to read at all!!! Just using as a recent example, she wanted to read wicked and even rented it and started it, then i was told about the content and i made her stop. Sigh. Any ideas??? Thanks

  4. some days i feel like dd is doing so well and really coming along and then the next thing i know, poof.... she has totally forgotten some basic concept from 2nd grade. we spend sooooo much time on learing something new or remediation that i think we will never get anywhere need grade level, ever! at this point in our life, i'd be happy if she could remember basic math, can read and write decently and actually remember just that stuff! i dont think she will ever touch algebra, i cant even imagine how she could or would!

i guess i should explain a little about her... she is 12.5 and finishing 6th grade, but functions more like a 3rd grader. she is diagnosed adhd severe impulsivity, mood disorder, pdd-nos (most likley aspie), slow processing speed, dysgraphia. she takes a few meds. we just seem to get no where really fast and she becomes easily frustrated and once that happens, there is no moving forward at all for a while. strangely enough, besides her lack of friendships and social interaction, not a sole in homeschool group or co-op really notice anything wrong with her at all.

any thoughts or ideas??? should we just keep plugging away and hope i can at least equip her with just the basics or education before shes 18???? sigh....

  5. My 12 year old dd has definite learning issues and takes meds for adhd and mood issues. we are once again stuck with math and after sooooooo long of these same issued in math i could literally pull my hair out. We switched to life of fred early this year after a year of cle and her being bored. She really liked lof and she reviewed several elementary books and just moved through the middle school ones. So now we are about half through fractions n she doesnt have a clue whsts going on. And after her 6th grade cat test last month, i honestly dont have a clue whats even cemented in her head for math at all!!! What in earth can we do??? Im so done with this as well as she is ... She gets very angry when she gets frustrated. Any thoughts at all as to whaf to do or where to go from here??? Please help!!! Thanks

  6. No, we have always homeschooled. She has some learning issues that we have been working around, but it just seems like keep going over snd over the same things and she just picks up s little at a time. Thats why im thinking we need sometjing new to try since shes older. Her comprehension isnt usually to bad, we have been working on that in the lasf few months anyways.

  7. Hi. I have a super picky 9th grader. She is a real pain when it comes to reading, even free reading she is super picky on what she picks. For free reading we have had a hard time finding clean books. We went to the book store again this weekend and had to keep putting books down because there was inapproriate content in them. Is there a website or something where u can punch in s books name and find out its content on appropritness??? Or any recommendations? Then for literature... She just hates it! We are only required to do two literature books a year in high school .... Any recommendations on how to accomplish this or where to start?? Thanks so much everyone.

  8. My DD is getting ready to start 9th a little bit early since she's about done with most of her 8th grade English/Language Arts items. I'm a little unsure of where to go from here though. She is currently finishing Hake Grammar & Writing 8th, Daily Grams Jr. Sr. and Winston Grammar basic. All should be done by mid February, so I want to go ahead and order things in the next week or two. I'm still a bit confused on a full English credit. I think we are going to start Writing Strands 3 and of course have her read a few classics along with her free reading. She seems to be doing excellent with Winston Grammar and Daily Grams, but it feels kind of strange not having her do spelling, vocabulary and grammar mechanics anymore, even though she seems to have them down pat, I'm concerned on dropping them. Any thoughts or ideas on that?? Will Writing Strands and reading be enough? Thanks so much!

  9. does anyone know of an online college that would accept a 15 or 16 yr old student that would still be homeschooling there junior year of high school? im just wondering if this would be a potential option for dd now that were not living in a state that has dual enrollment at community colleges for a 15 year old :( actually, we dont even have a community college close by. grrr. so just thinking ahead :) thanks for any help!

  10. before i start, i should say we are relaxed homeschoolers, although im in one a strict state ;) this is my idea for 9th grade for dd in the fall. we have a diploma program that requires 4 years of english, 3 years of math, 3 years of science and social studies and 2 years of arts and humanities.

    math: life of fred

    science: abeka 9th

    social studies: abeka history 9th

english: (im still a bit messed up here)

reading of course, but she doesnt care much for literature, so not sure how to fix that yet

vocabulary: ideas on an easy vocab program?

writing: im thinking writing skills... any other ideas?

and then i dont know... this doesnt seem like a whole credit to me, any thoughts???

    arts and humanties:

    spanish 1 using mango

not sure on the others here... there will be several co-ops of high school level that i could use here (this year i could have used civics 1/2 credit, photography 1/2 credit, chemistry 1/2 credit ... just for example, so im sure there will be some for the fall as well ;)

any other thoughts of comments? please no bashing, i just need ideas. thanks everyone!
