  1. Subtract the equations

    y = x + 7

    -(y = -1/2x + 1)

    0 = 3/2X + 6            subtract 6 from each side

    - 6 = 3/2X                 multiple each side by 2/3

    2/3(-6) = 2/3(3/2X)

    -4 = X                substituted -4 back into either equation to solve for y

    y = (-4) + 7 = 3

    Intersection of these two lines is (-4, 3)

    Next one do the same way but it we need to *adjust* one of the equations and then subtract:

    2(x + 2y = 10)   ----->  2x + 4y = 20

    2x - 3y = 6          ----> -(2x - 3y = 6)

    0 + 7y = 14

    y = 2        Substitute 2 back into either equation to solve for x

    x + 2(2) = 10

    x = 6

    Intersection of these two lines is at (6,2)

    yes this is what we got for answers, the solutions manual has different answers though (see other post)....  :)

  2. does anyone want to help us figure out these 2 problems? the solutions manual doesn't have them worked out! if I plug in the answers they make sense, but we have no idea how they got the answers. we have spent all day reviewing all of chapter 7 in Jacobs geometry ed. 3 (and we have the Callahan dvd's and rewatched chap 7 as well). both dd and I are seriously missing something!

    graph the following pairs of simultaneous equations and tell what you can about the solutions  ...

    (the solutions manual has the problem graphed and the answer to x and y

    1. y=x+7

        y= -1/2x +1

    2. x+2y=10

        2x-3y=6

  3. my dd for 10th is going to have several co op classes that are good classes, but wont equal quarter credits. what do I do with them? lol! I hate to just see them count as nothing at all, but her schedule is pretty tight, so teaching more to each of them to bring it to quarter credits probably wont happen. for example she has a 6 hour cpr/first aid/aed certification and a 10 hour logic class on the art of argument.  any ideas or thoughts? thanks!

  4. short background, dd is starting 10th grade in the fall and is signed up at the university for English 101 as dual enrollment. she is VERY interested in talking dual enrollment classes although she is sticking rather firmly at the moment to not wanting to attend college after 12th grade (that's a whole different subject lol). so what she wants to do is take dual classes that can transfer over to cover different degrees if she changes her mind. she says if she does attend college after 12th grade, she almost certainly wont want a 4 year degree, so im back to looking at a 2 year specialized degree. ive researched a few different degrees and besides 2 English courses and 1 math course, nothing else on them is "generic". so I don't know what else for her to take that would actually be useful towards that? can any give some advice or suggestions? im new to the dual enrollment idea, since we only found a loop hole 2 weeks ago where a 10th grader could even attend and she jumped on it  ;)    thanks so much!

  6. I just recently heard about this  :)  dd is starting dual enrollment in the fall  for 10th grade for English and a few people have suddenly suggested that she not take any math classes for dual so she can try to test out for credit in math.  can someone explain to me what this means?? lol!!! dd was only thinking of a getting a 2 year degree in something particular, so my assumption was to get her core classes out of the way with dual, but now im so confused!!! help!  thanks so much :)

  7. has anyone done the online dual enrollment program? I would love the hear anything at all about it! dd will be in 10th grade this coming fall and our dual enrollment in our state doesn't start till 11th, but I was told by our evaluator last week that this is a popular option by some local homeschoolers to take a few classes in 10th grade as dual enrollment online with them at a reduced rate to get ahead. thanks so much!

  8. I just purchased Jacobs algebra with dr callahans dvds for dd and she is devouring them! I wanted to start searching for geometry to have ready at a good price, but im a bit confused. if we use dr callahans dvds for it, then we need to use the 3rd edition of the student book? is that correct? in searching back previous threads it seems most like the 2nd edition better. is the 3rd edition not good or somehow very different?  thanks so much for any input  :)

  9. dd , 15, is using her money to buy a VERY inexpensive tablet for herself  :)  basicly just to play around on, nothing fancy at all. since its her money and its only $60 for the tablet, does she need case for it?? im not thinking she would be taking it anywhere, except maybe to the library once in a blue moon. also, does she need some kind of screen skin protector for it? again, I don't want her to throw extra money out if its just being used in her room to play games and Skype lol! thanks for any help!

  10. Two options.  One, not to be dumb, but what are you posting from, your phone?  I wish they could get their online stuff ready.  I think they're talking about a streamed version.  If you have a computer and it doesn't have a disk drive, you can get a disk drive for $30 from Best Buy.

    Two, use the textbook from your TT level.

    yep, my phone  :)   we don't have a computer at all at this point. I surpose I could look into a I pad style and add on the dvd drive ? but I know nothing at all about those lol!!!

    we don't currently have the textbook, but im thinking she really needs the lecture parts on some of them to understand the concepts. that was what was helping her....

  11. dd was using life of fred for math and doing very well at it when I suddenly realized she wasn't retaining much. she had gotten through algebra 1 in life of fred. so I panicked and had her do a placement test in teaching textbooks and decided it was best for her to do a quick review of prealgebra and then move back into algebra 1. well, today our computer crashed!!!! we so do not have the money to purchase another one right now, so now I have no idea what on earth to do with her math!!!! she was only at lesson 35 in algebra 1..... but she was struggling some. if I put her back to something offline or non computer based, I have no clue what to use!!! any help at all?? she hated MUS by the way, so that's out. she doesn't need anything rigourous, just math that covers what she needs to know and needs no help from me. any input would be great! thank you!
