  1. I can tell you our very simple history program that I pulled together last year for my 6th grade ds. We did an entire year of Middle Ages at his request, but could easily have had time for Renaissance and Reformation too.

We bought a TruthQuest Middle Ages history guide for less than 30.00,

added in Knowledge Quest Black Line Maps of World History CD, printed up some maps and stuck them in his notebook.

I also bought the TOG classic CD (that I don't think they have any more) and printed up additional projects and stuff. Plus I found some cool MA worksheets off the internet and stuck them in the notebook just for fun.

Then I looked through the TQ guide and picked some novels/literature/historical fiction that I thought he would enjoy and placed an order to Amazon.

He used the Guerber book Story of the Middle Ages for independent reading.

It was a very simple, nice, inexpensive year for my ds and I think he learned a lot. I know he enjoyed it.

If you did this you could add in a spine (don't know what), a book for your 4th grader, then pick up extra non fiction every so often for your book basket/extra reading.

I have a reading list somewhere on my computer of what he read last year...but mostly it was literature....I don't have time to look for it right now, but if you are interested I could find it later on.

Thank you for posting this, that is practically what i'm doing for Modern History this year. I bought the TOG classic year 4 CD and we'll be using Truthquest AORIII. I'm so glad to know it actually works, I was bummed not to be using TOG yr. 4 this year.:)

  2. If it's a request, but not legally binding, here's what I look at as a reasonable thing for me to do.

Since there was no mention at purchase of either a hefty restocking fee or the fact that they'd like it not to be re-sold, here's what I think seems fair (I may be wrong, and please don't slam me if you disagree, just gently remind me that my ethics are slipping :tongue_smilie:).

I will get the materials and probably love them and use them all. If I get them and don't think it's a good fit for my family, I will re-sell them, as long as we have *used no part of them.* If we use them in any way, I will consider them mine forever :D

It really is a battle for me, because I'm pretty sure the curriculum will enrich my dc's year, and by extension their life. At the same time, I really wish that I could take a stand against their cr*ppy policy (and trust me, using that word is as profane as I get, so it's a big deal to me. I'm *really* upset.)

I think not re-selling it after I've intellectually "used" it is fair.

I think not being able to sell it to someone who'd get use out of it if I won't be using it at all is ridiculous.

I think that's fair, but then again my ethics may not be what they should be either

  3. No, you couldn't skip Latin Alive! Book 1. One reason for this is because LC does not explain the grammar and if you skip levels in LA! you will miss a lot of grammar.

Are you going to have the older children work on Latin together? I would suggest moving on the Latin Alive this year for the sake of your 11th & 10th grade students.

Yes, I wanted the older ones to work together. So would I just go with LA for all three of the older ones or use LCII with the 7th grader and LA with the 10 & 11 th grader? Thanks

  4. We have used LCI and will use LCII this year, mainly because we already have it, could we skip Latin Alive book 1 and move into book 2 when it comes out. Or do you suggest we get through book 1 as quickly as we can, making sure we know everything, not rushing and then move onto book 2 and then 3? My kids will be in grades K, 7, 10, 11 this year. I do plan to start Song School Latin with my K'er after our Christmas break. Thanks

  5. Abbey, do you think this could work for older kids as well, I don't mean using HUS, i'm thinking of getting just the cards to use to sort of give a focus and then using TQ as our commentary and drawing most of our books from TQ, but the VP card would be our spine, sort of telling us what topics to cover, of course my younger kids could use the cards as is. Thanks
