  1. I had mine 8-9 years ago. I haven't had any problems beyond basic healing. I have a tinge of pink on a tissue once every few months. That is it. I went from bleeding for weeks or months at a time to a tinge of pink. The procedure hurt, I healed. LOVE it. Don't regret it. Have thanked my dr many, many times for doing such a great job.! I would do it again in a heart beat.

This has be brought up many times on the board, search ablation and you will find a lot of threads and info about it.

:iagree: I had mine about 3 years ago but agree with everything else she said - and I also thank my dr. everytime i see her :)

  2. personally i feel like she is guilty - even she did not personally kill her child - she was responsible to her child. she was her mother. if my child were missing as she claimed for a day even, i would not be out partying, getting tattoos, etc, etc - I would be doing all in my power to find my child. the only tears that woman shed were for herself.

to be not even found guilty of negligence is disgusting imo. mothers and fathers are found guilty and have their children removed for A LOT LESS than this every day.

while this jury may not have been able to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt for murder 1 - to not even be able to find guilt of negligence... I find this appalling.

  3. what a terrible situation for your son!

Personally if it were my child, I would say no about the boys playing together again. It would seem that the boy is destructive and genuinely mean. He had no remorse for breaking your son's things or then throwing him under the bus. At 10 you can take responsibility for your own behavior and say, hey we both messed up. Let's shake it off and be friends again. He just let your kid get hammered. YUCK!!!!

This is a good time to teach your son about toxic ppl and how to spot and avoid them!!

  4. In Progressive Composition they do picture study, letter writing, some original composition, dictation, copywork - it's all very beautiful and gentle in its approach. I haven't been able to find anything pre-3rd year (let me know if you do!!)

But my kids really seem to like - it doesn't seem so redundant.

  5. I'm attempting to shoestring budget for my 5 this year - our plan looks something like this -

I have a planned reading list for each kid and I will find these books at the Library, goodwill, sales, etc (I love to buy books :) ) will do narrations and the occasional free study guide I find online.

Grammar and Writing: vintage books: Maxwell and Serl (i.e. Progressive Composition and PLL and ILL)

    Elemental Science; SOTW

EIL: Intro to Lit (for my highschooler) along with vintage grammar and writing.

We use YourTeacher.com for math, my subscription runs out in Feb and I will renew b/c I think this is worth the money. We will supplement with work from books from here - http://www.ck12.org/flexbook/

I bought Roots and Fruits last year and I'm going to finally figure out how to use it correctly this year.

I bought the whole MM 1-6 last year so I have that. I have LOF Fractions through Pre-algebra.

    I downloaded Funnix Phonics and Math when it was Free; I also have other vintage books for spelling (All American Speller), phonics (Word Mastery);

I'm buying a lot of used books from classified boards and sale/swap get together with my local groups especially for my high school.

    So that's my basic plan.

  6. it really frustrates me that the police refuse to take cases like this seriously!! if it were a man harrassing a woman in such a way they would be all over it!! phone harrassment and the behavior she is exhibiting would allow for a restraining order if the situation were reversed - man harrassing a woman!

It's situations like these that allow woman to believe that they can be abusers.

I would really force the police to stand up and take notice, even if it means taking the phone records and phone recordings and copies of harrassing txt messages personally in to the police station

maybe they are confused ab what constitutes harrassment:

    ha·rass·ment [ hérrəsmənt ]

    1. threatening or tormenting behavior: behavior that threatens or torments somebody, especially persistently

    http://definitions.uslegal.com/h/harassment/

Harassment in the second degree is a violation.

S 240.30 Aggravated harassment in the second degree.

A person is guilty of aggravated harassment in the second degree when, with intent to harass, annoy, threaten or alarm another person, he or she:

    1. Either (a) communicates with a person, anonymously or otherwise, by telephone, or by telegraph, mail or any other form of written communication, in a manner likely to cause annoyance or alarm; or (b) causes a communication to be initiated by mechanical or electronic means or otherwise with a person, anonymously or otherwise, by telephone, or by telegraph, mail or any other form of written communication, in a manner likely to cause annoyance or alarm; or
    2. Makes a telephone call, whether or not a conversation ensues, with no purpose of legitimate communication; or
    3. Strikes, shoves, kicks, or otherwise subjects another person to physical contact, or attempts or threatens to do the same because of a belief or perception regarding such person`s race, color, national origin, ancestry, gender, religion, religious practice, age, disability or sexual orientation, regardless of whether the belief or perception is correct; or
    4. Commits the crime of harassment in the first degree and has previously been convicted of the crime of harassment in the first degree as defined by section 240.25 of this article within the preceding ten years.

Aggravated harassment in the second degree is a class A misdemeanor.

I would take this down to the police station with me and refuse to leave without them putting a restraining order against her. Why should she be allowed to believe that this behavior is not only acceptable but unstoppable!!

    :glare:

  7. I remember coming across those for the first time and thinking wth??

    haha

here are some examples b/c i can't remember where she originally shows it:

so I googled it from her web site:

    http://letsplaymath.net/2007/10/02/pre-algebra-problem-solving-3rd-grade/

    http://www.homeschoolmath.net/newsletter/volume53-may-2011.htm

scroll down the page for this one

also - i looked up the TOC for 4A and it says word problems and bar diagrams on pg 27 :D HTH

  8. no - i have not been brave enough to attempt it. we are planning to start learnables french since that's my high schoolers foreign language elective BUT they are actually asking to do Latin but I just don't even know where to begin with it.

I'd want something so EASY and open and GO. I haven't even honestly researched it a whole lot.:001_unsure:

  9. absolutely :)

I guess that would have been smart

    School Composition

Progressive Composition (this is the 7 and 8th year book but they have one for 3 and 4th year and 5 and 6th year) I have 3 and 4th year saved on my computer but I can't find it in google books now. :glare:

    Higher Lessons in English

    Intermediate Language Lessons

    First Book in English

(I realize I wrote the names of the younger kids grammar lessons incorrectly but this is the correct book titles)

Webster's All American Speller my older children need a lot of phonics remedial work and I think this might be the best way to go.

Word Mastery - I'll also be using this for phonics

    Thanks :D

  10. my son loves LOF and after we finish MM 6 and finish up LOF Decimals this year we'll do LOF pre-algebra.

As a side note, we use YourTeacher.com for my dd pre-algebra and will be using for Algebra 1. It is the first time my daughter has actually 1. not complained about doing math and two been able to explain to me the math concepts she's learning about. Although it does not have a lot of review and so we'll be doing some extra work from other sources to be sure she is having retention.

I will be using YourTeacher.com for my son and other children as well. My daughter who prefers not do school work on the computer really, really loves it. So we're sticking with it.

eta: wow - this was horrible grammar - i need more coffee.....

Any feedback. I think I feel really good about this plan. And I've got several book lists compiled both aligning with our history lessons, science lessons and just in general.

I'm wondering if I'll ever feel confident homeschooling. Maybe when I plan Year 3???

    TIA

  12. We've really liked it. I bought the text, theory book and practical book. I felt comfortable enough without the TM. I've skipped some of the experiments in the practical WB but there are enough we can easily do that I think it's worth it.

Whether your younger ones could use it, I'm not sure. My 9 yr old does MPH 3/4 and certainly doesn't have the reading or writing skills for IS. He's not really at grade level in those skills yet but I think even an average to somewhat ahead 9 year old would be having some trouble with IS. I'd probably be more inclined to go for MPH 5/6 for the two younger ones and IS A for the 13 yr old.

Thank you for the suggestions. We really LOVE science in this house. Though none of us are especially sciencey - so what we really need is something that gives us direction and is fun but also has the backbone we need. While Elemental Science is Wonderful, I just felt like they never really learned enough.

  13. Same here and I used to be an unschooler. :) It took me a very long time to stop resisting curriculum, especially with science. I knew what science should be but without anything to ground me it just never got done, even informally. Now I have Singapore MPH and Interactive Science and it's amazing how having that backbone seems to make the whole subject stand up and demand notice. We do more experiments, notice more around us, read more related books...It's been a blessing for us.

For Interactive Science do you buy all the books? Or just the txtbook, activity book and tm?

It looks like a great science program. I have a 9 yo, 11 and 13 yo that I'm trying to combine science for next year and I think I could use this? What do you think from your previous experience with it? We used elemental science last year. Next year will be our 2nd year of hs'ing.

  14. My I gently make a suggestion?

Just as your children do not need a classroom in order to learn, they also do NOT need a curriculum or program in order to learn. Instead of fretting over finding the perfect curriculum, hit the library, google a topic, search Amazon. There are so many wonderful titles already published, so many teaching guides and plans on the internet that you can easily find material to cover any topic for any child.

Have some excellent reference books on your shelves. A history and science encyclopedia, local field guides to birds, bugs, critters and plants. Organize your internet bookmarks by subject. Then start reading together and stop to look something up, stop to explain a word to ask questions and comment on the story. Get outside and start observing the things around you and identify them. Keep a nature journal. Do copy work, dictation and narration from the things you read. Diagram an interesting sentence. Then read some more. Talk. Think.

I did not use a single text book or curriculum, except for math, until my kids were in high school. We read books, loosely following the history cycle, but sometimes following interests instead. We read aloud, they read independently. We traveled, visited museums, watched documentaries, listened to radio programs and podcasts. Are there gaps in their knowledge? Of course there are! But they have a lifetime in front of them to continue learning. They are engaging and wonderful young men. Articulate, too. Knowledgeable and inquisitive.

I have two main complaints about textbooks and packaged programs. First they give the illusion that education is finite. I don't believe everything a 3rd grader, for instance, needs to know about a topic can be defined and packaged. I don't believe that the only questions that can be raised about a book or a topic are the ones found in a teacher's guide, and that the only acceptable answers are those imagined by the publishers. I homeschool to give a individualized education and to nurture my children's curiosity. I'm not here to check off boxes. My second complaint is pre-packaged curricula perpetuates the myth that all learning has to be handed down on high from an "expert". I can teach myself how to crochet or fix the dishwasher. I can learn about The Iliad or about quantum mechanics. I certainly do turn to and value experts, but I don't need them guiding every single step of the way.

So there's my soap box speech. You don't need a curriculum, you just need to apply that same energy to finding good books and internet sites and you will have everything you need.

Do you mind if I print your post and put it in the front of my planner for next year so I remember to breathe and enjoy the learning process with my children??? :grouphug:

  15. we homeschool b/c we live in a place where the schools are just terrible. My kids were just doing terrible (at least imo) and I knew that they deserved better; with some one on one they could catch up and really learn. Not just learn to pass tests.

I want my kids to love to learn - Explore the areas that interest them and become the ppl that G-d wants them to be. I don't want them to be crushed by a school system that doesn't care ab them.
