  1. It hit me last week that I will have a 5th grader. I am panicking just a bit on this one. I have no idea what we will be using next year. I had a very detailed plan for the first 4 years but nothing after that. :)

So what have you used that has worked well? I am most concerned with history and science as these have been the two subjects we haven't covered as well as I would have liked. Dd likes a very hands on science program however I am not pleased with the programs that base the entire curriculum on "household items". I never have these items! I want a program that I can purchase a complete kit or at least an itemized list of must haves.

We have used SOTW for history and have enjoyed it a lot. I don't know what to use as our spine next year so any recommendations would be great.

Really I just need every subject :) I am shocked that 4 years have gone by so quickly. It's left me feeling a little off balance.

    TIA!

  2. I cancelled 2 of our life insurance plans last week for a few different reasons. We still have 2 (one on each of us) through our insurance agent. We would like to replace the two cancelled with higher amounts and as term policies. Our agent is a nightmare to get in touch with so we will be looking elsewhere.

What company would you recommend for a simple term life policy? We are fine with medical checks if it is required.

  3. We live in a relatively rural area with a fairly low average income. I wonder how well the higher priced fee (which I am all for!) would go over here. I will have to ponder that and talk with local mom's to get a better feel. My initial thought was to charge at minimum $100 but as I am calculating costs of space, supplies etc I think it will need to be higher.

I appreciate the responses so far.

  4. Camp is 6 weeks long 2 days a week (2 hours a day) in the local area. Ages 6-14

Camp includes all supplies and materials. Classes cover famous artists, styles, and mediums and are taught by local moms. Hands on projects included each day.

What is the most you would be willing to pay per child?

  5. Amazingly, I'm only a 3. Even more amazingly, my link was Bill Nye, who is not exactly someone known for a lot of movies as such.

I put in John Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) since the movie was filled in the town my SIL lives in AND I've eaten in the restaurant. Dear old John has a Bacon score of infinity. Apparently Kevin doesn't associate with someone whose favorite animal is a lyger.

ETA: Did I really just spell Napoleon wrong!? It's bed time.

  6. Today it hit me that I will have a middle schooler in under 2 years. I admit that freaked me out as I still see my oldest as a K most days. :)

After I did a bit of deep breathing I grabbed my WTM to check things out so I can start looking here and there. I noticed that it is recommended that the typical math study starting in 7th goes pre-al, algebra, geometry, algebra 2 and so on. Years I ago I read (maybe heard a lecture?) that geometry taught first is actually better for most kids as it helps transition from tangible math to abstract math better. It was also mentioned that most kids will pick up geometry faster than algebra as it makes more sense to them. I could be crazy but I thought it also mentioned that we were one of the only countries that throws geometry in the middle of the algebras

Have any of you found this to be accurate? Do you follow the traditional math levels as listed above?

I wish I could remember where I read/saw/heard that info beause I would like to go over it again. If you happen to know what I am talking about please send me the link/info. :)

  7. We just moved so we are trying to get our nature bearings again.

We have been enjoying listening to the owl in one of our pine trees. It has the most beautiful hoot I've ever heard, so very clear and precise. Ds (the resident bird man) claims it's a great horned based on the call.

We saw our first Mountain Bluebird in another pine last week. The kids exclaimed so loudly that it flew off before I saw it. :) I've waited 30 years to see one, I guess I can keep waiting.

The lakes and rivers are swarming with geese but that's a normal around here so it doesn't feel "cool" anymore.

  8. We have shut down for the year. Starting the week of Thanksgiving until the end of the year we have 3 birthdays and two holidays which normally throws us off a little bit but this year we also added a move and a horrible flu. We didn't have computer access for 3 weeks on top of it. We are so far from our normal routine that I just called it break time. Come January we will pick up where we left off and work our butts off until the end of the year. Or so the theory goes anyway...

  9. I am trying to come up with an eye catching ad for our new business. Everything I have managed is so-so at best.

This add will be seen on a prominent blog that gets about 1.5 mil hits a month. I want people to be so excited to sign up for our product that they don't even think of the price. :)

Anyone willing to help me out? If so PM me and I will send you our site link and other info. I have a few pennies I could send your way but not much. :)

    Thanks!

  10. Is it possible to supplement with an audio version instead? It's on Librivox.

I thought of this too and it may work. The rules for this co-op say no more than 1 hour of outside work can be required. From what I understand from other teachers is not expect more than 30 min max from most families. That's another reason I was leaning toward an abridged version.

  11. I am teaching a literature class in January using Anne of Green Gables. The class is for girls ages 10-12. Most of the girls can read at least grade level but I was told there are a few struggling readers. I am looking for an abridged version that will keep the interest of all the girls regardless of their reading abilities.

Which abridged version would you recommend?

  12. It's not Thanksgiving without my grandmas potatoes. I don't know what they are really called because we just call them Grandmas Potatoes. :) Basically they are a heart attack waiting to happen. Potatoes, sour cream, cheese... topped with crunchy buttery topping. Oh so yummy and the only time of the year I willingly eat cream of soups.

Green Bean Casserole?? Ewwww. Just the look of it makes me want to gag. Add in the smell and taste and it's game over for me. *shudders*

  13. Now do y'all actually check the s.o. registries before buyinga house? Obviously the OP did, but to everyone saying it's such an obvious decision, have you in fact checked before making your home purchases?

Actually I came by the information by chance. In fact I hadn't even considered checking for SO's- it just wasn't on my radar.

In fact I was double checking average income, population, taxes, etc.

This afternoon we went back out to the house with the realtor. I wanted to get the scoop on the house next door, view property lines etc. We pulled into the driveway I noticed a travel trailer that looked like it was put up for winter. Nope, it was winterized for all season living. I figure he must stay there when he isn't driving truck. It was inches from the driveway of the house we were looking at.

So unfortunately we will be passing up a killer deal (and I do mean killer) on the house and now that the realtor knows, the people probably won't be able to sell it easily if it all. Which for them is especially sad as the house is in an estate that needs to sell to pay for the care of their 94yo mother.

However the blessing of not living in constant wonder and concern far out weigh how fantastic of a property it was. Oh well, another will come along that will work out better.

  14. House in parents names is done to avoid taxes when the area gives a substantial discount to seniors. If that is his registered address, you should call the local police dept and get the real story. Does he live there, is he in prison now, what? Shame on that realtor for not giving you the facts.Who is selling the house?

The realtor had no idea until I called her this morning. The house has been used as a rental for quite some time but the tenants recently moved out. She has only been out to the house once and that was in the early summer when she listed it. She thought the neighbors house was vacant.

The realtor called the police department. They can not reveal any information other than was was listed on the SO registry site or the Idaho Repository site (where I found his records). They can not tell us if he is actually physically living there or not as it goes against privacy laws. Looking at his record somehow there is still activity going on with the most recent case. OTSC hearings have been rescheduled for months with the newest date set for end of the year. I'm not sure what all that would mean on a case that he already did time for.

  15. Many thoughts.

If the house belongs to elderly parents, there is a real chance that he could inherit and potentially live there, especially if he is currently using it as a mailing address.

It is very, very difficult to prove pedophilia, and often the actual charges do not reflect the reality. (Charges are usually under-representative of the reality.) Based on the information provided, he sounds like a bona fide pedophile. Statistically speaking, it is highly unlikely that the daughter was/is his only victim, though he may not have been caught with any other children.

It is standard (though totally idiotic) in child abuse cases for the abuser to be restricted from access only to his known victims, but not to children in general. The fact that he was restricted only from his daughter is not a reflection of his actual crimes, but of the fact that they could only prove crimes against one child and do not legally have the right to restrict access to other children. Typically an offender has to have abused many children and been convicted more than once to have their rights restricted in this way. Statistically, though, most pedophiles have multiple victims over a span of many years.

Under these circumstances there is no way I would buy this house.

    My thoughts exactly.

  16. So here is the information I have been able to find today.

The house is not his. It is owned by his elderly parents (mid eighties). On his record he has multiple gross vehicle weight infractions so my guess he is a trucker and he uses his parents address while he works.

From the record I found that the lewd conduct was against his daughter (or step). The prosecution originally filed 3 counts of sexual abuse with a minor then dropped the charges to one count of lewd conduct. Both he had his wife had restraining orders against each other at this time with a divorce filed. He was denied contact with the daughter but not other family members.

I was hoping that I could find some sort of frat boy history but that is not the case. I spoke with the realtor this morning. She was under the impression the house had been empty for many months. It does appear empty so it may be that the house is in his parents names still, they are deceased, and he just uses the address. I don't know.

I had horrible, horrible nightmares last night because of all this....

  17. I'd like to say it's freeing, because in some ways it is, but holy cow do I miss the speed of it when I am lost, needing an emergency number, or any other thing that I would use the internet for while traveling. I hate my simple basic phone. I dislike it a lot, enough to mention it at least once a day. :)

That said I am very anti technology most days and don't miss the mindless stuff I used to do just to waste my time. I won't say my laundry is done any quicker but I haven't watched an episode of Supersize vs. Super Skinny in a long time. :D
