Does anyone know if it matters which edition of this I purchase used? I can get a copy of 3rd edition for cheap, but I actually need 2 books since DD and DS are working together. So if I am going to buy them, I want to get 2 of the same ones and if edition matters, get the right one! Thanks!!

Thanks so much Elizabeth! I was offline a while due to some things going on, but i wanted to get back to this and you were soooo helpful!! Thanks for digging that out and looking it up! Basically, I am looking to use one of these with a 7th and 8th grader, both of which have had Junior Analytical Grammar before. We liked it ok, but it seemed kind of monotonous to us. Just wondering if something like Jensen's would be a better fit, but give us in depth grammar that is also pratical and useful. (Not just alot of knowledge for knowledge sake) kwim?

would it be crazy to just use a grammar handbook??

So do you think using something like AG would be too little exposure, (although heavy while you go through it,) since is not intended to go through but once? Dont get me wrong, I love diagramming and I love grammar. I just hate to go over and over the same basic things yearly without needing to. Like, a noun is the name of a person, place, thing, etc, and this how you make words plural, etc. KWIM? -

Ha, love it! That is EXACTLY where I am headed!! I have not even looked at Jensens. And I did think about the answer issue too. hmmm. -
I was talking to DH last night about my grammar woes and were talking about what it would have been like in the "old days" to learn grammar. Did they really go through year after year of grammar? Didnt they just have a grammar book to go through and once they learned it was done? I am wondering if it is possible to do that with my kids. Go through a grammar "textbook" or handbook and cover it that way. Would there be enough exercises in it? I know some may mention AG, and I have that, but it looks so overkill on the diagramming. I am looking for something that covers more usage than it seems AG does. Any thoughts? Am I nuts? Tina in SC

how far up have you gone in LOF so far? Have you used the algebra, and did you find the same thing with not knowing the algorithms?
-
so, does anyone use LOF alongside traditional? Or go through LOF like over the summer and then do traditional? what is the best way you have found to use LOF?

I would like to know that too! an example of what she didnt know how to do.

Hi, I would like to post on For Sale, but it is saying I do not have the authorization to do so. I have over 50 posts, what could be wrong? Thanks, Tina in SC

I am looking at the Algebra companion book at the prealgebra readiness questions. So if my child can do those, are they REALLY ready to start the algebra book, even if they have not had "prealgebra?" If you use LOF only, how is it going? Do you feel your student is getting just as much as in a traditional textbook? What are your thoughts? Tina in SC

thanks so much for those placement test links also!

yes, they are both finishing up MM6B right now. My son, who is actually 17 mo. younger than my dd, is actually better at sitting and thinking through the math. How much time "should" we anticipate on higher math?

Hi, I have 2 kids (going into 7th and 8th) that placed into the Saxon algebra instead of prealgebra. I am not a math person, and I dont know if I should actually let them skip prealgebra or not. They are not super mathy, but they did do the problems correctly on the placement. Also, I am not actually planning on using Saxon, probably either Lials or Chalkdust. what are your thoughts on letting them skip prealgebra. They are coming from Math Mammoth. Thanks! Tina in SC
