  1. I have decided to stop Lial's Introductory Algebra with my 13 year old son. I thought that after having a break at Christmas, he would be fresh to begin again. He actually cried yesterday, so I just gave him an assignment to read over the section he was working in before Christmas (3.3). He held the book awhile, but really didn't read or review. Today, when I pulled the book out he went from being happy to almost crying again. As I was trying to decided where and how to begin he began telling me how much he hated math. He has NEVER hated math.

I am disappointed. I absolutely LOVE the Lials books. But we aren't getting anywhere and we are both miserable.

I posted to buy a used Chalkdust on the Sale / Swap boards. For now, I am going to use Teaching Textbooks because I already own it, have it here, and can begin today.

    Question:

Has anyone used TT Al 1 with a math bright (usually anyway) 8th grader? Is there an inexpensive way to 'beef up' TT?

    All opinions needed and welcomed!

    Thanks,

    Pam

  2. Sometimes you have choices and sometimes you don't.

We just moved from La to Tn last spring. Dh did not have a choice of where he was to work... he was told when to report for work. :)

We did however have choices about where to live. At first we limited ourselves to "less than 30 minute commute". After looking around the entire area, speaking to others employed in the same office, and looking at lots of properties, we decided to move a little further out and have a little more room.

I am really not sure what you are asking. Are you asking about limiting where he will work? Where you will live?

  3. I've have tried flylady several times. I just can't "do it" the flylady way. I have however taken many of her ideas and tweaked them to fit our family. I occasionally go to her website to see the current "zone" and clean a bit in the zone. Her method is based on Pam and Peggys Sidetracked Home Executives book, which seems to fit me a little better.

  4. Last year my then 12yob did a whole year of 3 word outlining and rewriting simple paragraphs. This year we are spending the whole year on dress ups. I can see great improvement. In fact we may not even sspend the whole year on that one thing.

How long to see results? It depends on the student. there are 9 units. Spending a semester on each unit will complete all 9 by 12th grade. And, you dont' have to complete all 9 units. In my opinion anyway.

  5. I usually work on school for about 5 hours a day, but the kids are not working that long. Even my high schoolers have some days they only work 2 or 3 hours. Some days my high schoolers might work 6 or 7 hours a day IF they have been dwaddling with lessons.

You have to find the fit for your family. Your schedule, your husband's job, the meals your prepare, health conditions, extendend family, church, all types of things play a role in finding the best fit for YOU.

Even SWB does not do EVERYTHING in WTM.

I HATE the word "rigoruous"... which is probably misspelled because I need more coffee.

I have been homeschooling 13 years: don't beat yourself up because your school day does not look like someone else's day. Find your fit and flow with it. Don't stress or the kids will pick up on your stress and then they will stress.

  6. DVD, CD, coffee or tea basket, warm socks, warm muffler (neck scarf), gift card, book, 2009 planner/calendar, bottle of wine.

Last year, I gave my aunt a basket with 5 or 6 boxes of tea I found on sale. The whole family really enjoyed "testing" to find their favorites. A really cheap gift ( I had the basket, the tea was about $1 per box) was the HIT of the party!

  7. I think it depends on your state regulations and the college admissions requirements.

You can probably "put together" a computer skills credit if your son spends any time on the computer at all.

An economics book for high school is usually pretty short since in most states it is only a half credit. Find a text and let him read through it,quizzing him on the voabulary words.

MUS has a consumer math. I think it could be done relatively quickly.... Watch the DVD, work through SOME of the problems, do the tests... maybe even do the tests open book.

Sometimes we just have to jump through hoops.

    Hope this helps,

    Pam

  8. I posted a few weeks back about my 13yob and Lial's. I read each message carefully and have adjusted the assignments. DS is getting most of the problems correct now, but when it comes math time he "has a headache" or " my stomach is upset" or "can i get a snack".

    Sigh.

I don't want to use Saxon. I am not sure TT or MUS would be enough for this student. I can't afford Caulkdust. Jacob's looks way to verbal for this boy.

    Double sigh.

What is your second choice after Lial's?

    THanks,

    Pam

  9. I have felt like throwing in the towel several times. Maybe many times. But, now that my girls are high schoolers.... I am so glad I kept homeschooling. I see them blossoming in their own uniques talents, abilities, interests. If they were in a classroom there would be NO TIME to blossom.

For several years we had life's hard situations that greatly imposed upon our schooling. Lots of subjects did not get done. And they certainly weren't done the WTM way. Life became surviving the day, not the planned classical education that I had dreamed of.

If you'll search of one of my posts, you'll see that I always struggle with school between Thanksgiving and New Year's. there are just too many distractions that take attention from really getting lessons done well.

I think most every homeschooler struggles this time of year. Some families don't do any school in December at all. Your children are still young enough for you to completely drop academics this month. If you need to count school days, then read some books, do crafts, sing along with christmas carol CDs, go to a museum, watch documentaries, bake cookies, etc.

My point is that this is the wrong time to make a huge decision to stop homeschooling altogether.

My favorite holiday is New Years. Because the year is fresh. I can start over. I usually take a couple of days in December to truthfully gage our school. What is getting done? What is not getting done? I usually change the schedule and that gives some freshness to school. New pencils, new notebooks also give some freshness to school.

At the age of your children, basic math, some phonics and reading, and some wonderful read alouds are all the school they really need. You might want to try just those subjects in January and then re-evaluate for the spring semester.

    Hugs,

    Pam

  10. We have homeschooled for 13 years, and all 13 of those years I have an awful time of it from Thanksgiving to New Year's. We did "some" school today. We did "some" school yesterday. It is cold and dark and rainning. We'd rather sleep in and drink hot chocolate or tea all day.

Every year, I think.. "No school between Thanksgiving and Christmas" and then we get sick/take trip/have visitors/ etc and NEED to do school. This year I have state regulations to follow and I NEED these days in December to count. And, with high schoolers, I can't forget academics and bake cookies "as school".

Maybe tomorrow we'll get more done..... ?????

    Just thinkin'.....

  12. I just moved away from family to TN this last May. We moved because dh was offered a good job in his field with steady pay and benefits. We had been self employed with no insurance for over 4 years.

My mom took it pretty hard, but she understood.

If the move is to improve your family, then yes, move. Extended family will just have to understand that you are doing the best thing for your marriage and your children.

    Tennessee is WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!
