Non AP for sure!
Already assembled would be great!
But, I could put something together myself....
I'm the classic "curriculum tweaker" anyway. :)
Good videos/lectures?

My soon-to-be 12th grade son has decided on Environmental Science. What are the best programs? Texts?
I glanced at Oak Meadows website. The sample looks interesting.
What else?
Thanks!

I just noticed that Crimson has 12 posts.
Maybe she (or he) is a newbie with lofty ideals.
In my opinion, all science courses in high school are introductions. In fact, ALL courses in high school are introductions. (Except for math. Math needs to be understood progressively. )
High school classes are not meant for the student to COMPLETELY learn/grasp/understand everything about subject content! One can learn an awful LOT about science with conceptual courses that set a foundation.
High school is a foundation for college and a foundation for life. I think all of us "oldbies" here at WTM know that.

We've used both and I MUCH prefer MUS! The MUS covers basic geometry. It is light on proofs and they are pushed to the end. All through the course, you are asked "why?", which is the basics of proofs.
TT teaches proofs from the beginning and has them on most, (every?) problem set. The difficulty is..... proofs can be done in different ways... my girls were frustrated when their answers were not exactly like the published "right" answer. One of my girls finished TT and I switched the other to MUS. My boys have done MUS.
My older son has not had trouble doing more advanced college courses because of MUS. In fact, he would tell you that because MUS emphasis is on really UNDERSTANDING the BASICS, that he had a good foundation and was well prepared for college math.
I would vote for MUS! :)

Does Prof Rob Bob have algebra playlists on youtube?

Thank you all!
He already has the standard half credit of "government." I think I"m looking for a college-level "Intro to Poli Sci".
Math tutors or outsourcing is probably out of the question. We just do not have the money.
Statistics might work! What is a good text?

We"ve decided on:
American History and Literature
Political Science
Still need to decide on:
A full credit for science. 12th grade. He had done Biology, Chemistry, Applied Science
An 'easy' math that is 'beyond' Algebra 2.
Any suggestions?

If you are enrolled in Alpha Omega's academy, they will give grades and do transcripts. He might be more challenged with a different program.
We have used SOS and Lifepacs for some needed subjects or "fill ins". One son did SOS 20th century history because he read through this American History assignments too fast. He needed more "hours" and I needed something to "grade."
I'm looking at free online college lectures for my son moving into the 12th grade. Can't give any recommendations at this point. I'm just beginning my research!
I can recommend Khan Academy and InterActMath.com!

Thanks so much!
I've done some research and I think that MOOCs are going to be the best fit. Now finding and deciding is going to be the HARD part!

Ok... I just looked at your first suggestions. Don't have time to look at the second suggest
All I can say is WOW! My brain hurts! Homeschooling sure has changed in the 20 years I've been homeschooling!
These websites all look so good!
How do I choose???

Thanks! Checking those out now!

Beginning to plan 12th grade for the final time. *bittersweet*
My son is a history buff and political junkie. He'll probably major in history, political science, or pre-law. I am not planning on any dual enrollment at this time. (maturity issues mainly... he does not even have his driver's license yet)
1. Need suggestions for math. Here in TN our "college prep" requires a full credit of math that is BEYOND Algebra 2. My son is struggling with TT Algebra 2. (Not going into the full story there.. plenty of my old posts if you must know.) Any suggestions? Continue with TT Pre-Calc? What else is "beyond Algebra 2"? Consumer Math and Business Math are not considered "beyond".
2. Need suggestions for science. I got some suggestions in another thread. So far, he has done Apologia Biology and Chemistry.. both full credits. This year he had done about a half credit of "Applied Science". I don't think he has the math for physics.
One mom I know is listening to Apologia Physics with her son and discussing as they listen. I think she is supplementing with some OCW lectures. I don't think they are doing any of the math. Can you learn "about" physics without the math? Regentrude?
After our school meeting this morning, he told me to make a list of 4 or 5 science suggestions and he will choose from my list.
3. American History: We've got textbooks.... I'm looking for some free online lectures or courses. OR I'm thinking about a list of "living books" instead of the texts. The perfect combo for this student would probably be online lectures/documentaries with living books.
4. Political Science curriculum, text, free online suggestions? I could probably just "give" him a credit for all his research, knowledge, and analysis of current events. However, formally doing the subject would give him a jumpstart on the material in college.
5. Best ACT test prep for an extremely poor test taker!!! He can fail a written test, but when I ask him the same questions orally know every answer! He has EXTREME test anxiety over the ACT... which is why he has not taken it yet.
If you read all this THANK YOU!
Thanks in advance for all replies!

Sometimes I "grade" our discussions from readings or documentaries: A for excellent, B for good, C for "just ok". I will "warn" my son ahead of time usually, "Read carefully. I'll ask questions and grade our discussion." This really gives me a better feel for his understanding and analysis of the material than a "test" would. Sometimes , he blows me away with connections and wisdom! :)

I keep my lesson planners from year to year. They have the subject, textbook information, basic assignment plan, any grades for quizzes, tests, papers, and the number of school days. More just for "my" records and info than anything else.

We've used Khan Academy before. I see they have changed the website a lot over the past year!
I briefly glanced at Coursera, edEX, Class Central, and a few other websites today. WOW! These have REALLY changed and improved over the last few years! They seem to be like The Great Courses... are they?
Aside from Khan, which I am familiar with.....
What do you think is the best?
Should I just order some courses from The Great Courses? I'd rather do something FREE!
Some courses have "starting dates". Are these courses taught at a certain time and day? Once the course is finished can you go back and watch lectures again? ( We need something pre-recorded and self-paced, I think.)
Do you get textbooks? Do assignments? Only watch lectures?
Can we watch on TV or only computer?
Any and all info needed from experienced moms that use any of these (or other) websites!!
Thanks!

My question was really meant to be more "general". I've been out of the loop here for about a year, and was really just wondering what the trends are now.
Thanks!

Favorite curriculum come and go. I don't know the "flavor of the month" or "newest and bestest" programs anymore! I've been working outside the home and we've had more unschooling this year than I had planned.
So, what is new?
I'd like to add some websites and apps to our studies next year.
Suggestions for all subjects welcome... I have not decided on subjects for next year. (We do already have foreign language covered... so I don't need suggestions there. :) )
Thanks!
Edited to add: 12th grade boy.... ah, young man. :)
-
*Listening* for replies..... We are considering Geology for next year too.
-
I'm not sure what I have... Might be both???
I will see if I can find it for you.
-
Don't push it. I would choose one and do one.
If you are really interested in Physical Science, then just read the book.
-
Great suggestions! Thanks! I'll discuss these options with him.
I did not know that Quizlet could format the quiz for you! We've used quizlet for many years!
-
Thanks for remembering me!
Sometimes he does come to the college with me.
I can not afford to outsource because of $$$. That is why I work two jobs. :)
I've tried the suggested kind of scheduling in the past.. it has not worked. But , I should try it again. That is probably the solution. Perhaps one hour with me daily and a different subject each day? We could make it late in the morning. 10:30 or 11am.
I just KNEW coming here would help!
Just reading the replies has encouraged me!
Thanks!

Thanks Margaret.
I think I know you.. elsewhere on the web...

elegant essay, lively art of writing or jensen's format writing
in High School and Self-Education Board
Posted
I have Lively Art and have read part of it. Not "used" it yet.
Ds is burnt out on IEW materials, although we will probably do some of Theme Based Econ next year.
I'm pulling assignments from Jensens. I wish I would have bought Jensens years ago and just pulled assignments from it when all my kids were at home.
Not much of an answer. I think you could probably do some of each.
