I skip all of the beginning pgs of HTTS. They are not necessary if you know OG phonics rules, which you do. I go straight to the word lists and spiral dictation and just review the rule being covered before we start a new section.

I'll have to look into that further.  Thanks!

  2. It's hard to switch to anything after learning 'Think to Spell' method of SWR.  The first page I saw as a sample in HTTS was going over words like 'again' and 'across'.  They describe these words as words with the beginning A saying /u/.  We learned it as saying /A/ at the end of a syllable.  BUT, even learning Think to Spell for so many years, it still has not improved my boys' spelling.  Maybe they all really don't learn the same.  ?

It would be age-appropriate to work on morphology.

https://www.smartspeechtherapy.com/free-literacy-resources-for-parents-and-professionals/  Here's an uber list that will blow your mind. In particular look at the free materials from the MA Rooney Foundation and anything she recommends for morphology.

Some people like Words: Integrated Decoding and Spelling Instruction Based on Word Origin and Word Structure–Second Edition

The other thing you could do is take a year to do dictation. My dd usually needed *3* years through the SWR lists for them to stick, not the recommended 2, and we usually also did dictation. I used the sentences in the Wise Guide and also literature we were reading aloud. Can't go wrong with dictation.

Are they working on typing? They say typing invokes kinesthetic memory of the spelling. So you have visual and auditory memory that you can engage (spelling words aloud, visualizing them and spelling them backward, etc.), but you can also engage kinesthetic memory by typing.

We worked at least 3 years on SWR.  We did 2 years of field testing Liz FitzGerald's lesson plans for it.  They did dictation every day with that.

We didn't do typing.  I thought it wouldn't be as helpful because you don't form the letters when you type.  I need to rethink that.  We have typing instructor.  I can add spelling to it.

    Looking into your suggestions.  THANKS!

  4. What are the similarities and differences?

Would you recommend one over the other?

This would be for 11, 13, and 14 year old boys.  We have used SWR mostly, but they have REALLY gotten tired of it!  We fumbled around last year.

I need something to dig my heels into.  Not interested in AAS at this point.

The Anatomy and Chem/Physics is a bit light for middle school IMO. As both were written for up to 6th. I would be looking for a stronger program with more structured labs if you have STEM oriented kid or headed on a more college prep path.

I've read mixed views on this.  Some say there is no problem going into high school science with just the Anatomy and Chem/Physics books.  I appreciate your input, though!  It makes me dig deeper.

I keep changing my mind.  (as usual  :(   )  I am keeping Rainbow until I decide on 8th.

Yes, I think this is doable. That should work out to about a chapter per week which is a good pace for an 11/12 yo. I'm not the biggest fan, but my ds adored these books. Tackling all 3 will be fun for a kid who is interested in the topic.

Truthfully, I'm not a big fan either, but I know of the one we did with 2 older dc, it was a huge hit, so I'll grin and bear it.  :)

You probably could do it. It's the least favorite in our house for Apologia elementary. I'm sucking it up and trudging through Zoology 3 right now.

I think you asked about science courses in another post, right? I would totally rather do the anatomy & physiology one with an 11-12 year old or the chem & physics one.

Well, I'm going to go for it...

3 Zoology for 6th (IF I put him in 6th next year.  He was 4th this year), Anatomy & Physiology for 7th, and then Chemistry & Physics (OR Rainbow) for 8th.

Just a plan.  I'll decide for sure after the CHAP Convention, and I look at things and talk to people.

    THANK YOU!

What do you think of the elementary Chemistry and Physics compared to middle school Physical Science?

Similar, but not as much computation and definitely less boring. Ha ha...sorry, edited to add, I like Physics Chemistry from the elementary series better than the physical science from the secondary series. But Physics Chemistry definitely covers a lot less.

Could elementary be enough without Rainbow or middle school Physics to prepare the child enough for high school?
