  1. I happen to have a school district that is quite accommodating to homeschooler. My ASD child need a "social skills" class with peers and overseen by an SLP. He needs it like a subject, which is something typically developing kids don't need. When I was sitting down with the school team it was amazing to me that they were not really getting it. They thought our private SLP and I were requesting more social interaction because the assumption from them was that since he is homeschooled so he does not get enough interaction. I could have banged my head against a wall. He gets "plenty" of interaction thank you, just not the artificial kind that has them segregated by age for hours a day. The ignorance about homeschooling is so frustrating!

  2. And I'm probably not alone when I say I can't help but notice these things. They jump out and scream at me even though I'm not actually looking for mistakes. I don't call people out but I do notice them. It's a blessing and a curse. ;)

Oh, and I don't claim to have perfect grammar (though I'm pretty close to a perfect speller) and I do cringe when I find my own mistakes.

Yes Yes Yes. They just jump out and drive me batty. I can't help it either. Dh has threatened to get me a Tee shirt that reads "I am silently correcting your grammar"

  3. Do you have any reason to think that he might have an LD?  That doesn't sound typical.

    This.

My ds have a very low working memory and he took  FOREVER to do anything. It got worse as the work got harder. He may be struggling because it takes a lot of mental effort on his part. Look up working memory and executive functions and see if some of what you read fits into what you are seeing in your ds. If so, you may want to have evaluations. Shame on his teacher for yelling at him. It is so frustrating when teacher's ignorance discourages a child.  :glare:

ETA: It is well known that kids with executive function deficits, particularly low working memory, work 3x as hard as kids with no issues, to produce a fraction of the work. He may not be able to help it. My ds never worked faster no matter what I tried nor how much I pleaded with him. In the end it only produce either tears or a very tired  and discouraged ds. Evaluations were a blessing because I finally understood why he took so long and I was able to adjust to how he learns and what he can handle.

:grouphug: You may want to cross post over on the learning challenges board. There are a lot of us over there with similar situations.

  4. The best natural deodorant that actually works is called hippie stick by trim healthy mamma (used to be Kit Naturals). I used to use tom's of maine 24hr but I still had to reapply it at night so I wouldn't stink in the morning. Hippie stick works even after working out. I also *Love* skin care products and makeup from 100% pure but they can be pricey. A good inexpensive alternate is Everyday Shea for lotions and skincare. Also just plain coconut oil on the skin is pretty good although slippery.

I still use salon product for my hair because it is so finicky. Think fine but curlyish and lots of it. I also have not found a mascara I like better than l'oreal. The main thing for me is avoiding mineral oil and aluminum and when I can phylates.

  5. Just wondering if the store manager or someone in charge is aware he has autism? I think it might be helpful to disclose this so that someone is aware and can be an advocate for him. Of course, your ds would have to be comfortable with this too. Most people tend to be more understanding if they know there is a disability. I say most because there are always jerks.

  6. Watching on it on the news on L.I. while expecting hubby home any minute from work back when he was a paramedic. He was delayed at work and couldn't make it home. He finally called and said he will be among the EMS/PA police team called into the tower. This was before the towers fell. DH later called to tell me they had be cancelled and would not be joining the other team. Then the towers fell. Gasp. DH lost friends that day. We will never forget.
