  1. Thanks everyone for the quick responses! I have watched the videos on their website and looked at the sample pages. It is nice to hear from people who have actually "touched" it and used it!

I may see if they are going to be at the Homeschool Convention this year and check it out in person.

    Thanks again!

  2. You don't need the overheads. I just read through the student text with my dd and went over the set 2 problems as examples before assigning sets 1 and 3. Sets 2 and 3 are nearly identical, but with different numbers. If my dd had a lot of difficulty with set 3, I'd assign set 2 for the next day.

I didn't use the teaching suggestions in the teacher guide at all. I used the teacher guide exclusively for the answer key in the back.

I do use the test masters (a separate booklet) that has tests for each chapter.

I do about the same thing as Angie. I just use the teacher's manual for the answers.

  3.

Amy, do you think you will be using Biblioplan with the high school supplement later on? If not, do you have something else in mind?

We started homeschooling last year and I hope to go through the SOTW/Biblioplan cycle with my younger two...beefing it up a la WTM for the older of the two. I will probably use the WTM method for the second rotation for my youngest.

My oldest is being homeschooled for the first time this year and he is a HUGE history and WWII fanatic and wanted to study the 20th century...so he is doing SL Core 300. Next year I am thinking about dual enrolling him at our local community college and letting him take some history courses there. I had thought about getting the HS supplement and have him study the same time period we are studying, but the dual enrollment option seems to be better for his situation.

If the dual enrollment situation works for him, I may try it for my other two as well.

The joy of homeschooling is that you can do what works for your family!

    Good luck!

  4. For my overachiever, here's what we're planning:

    Math - Jacob's Geometry

    Science-Apologia Biology

Latin-Finish up LCT II and start LCT III

    English-R & S 8 (or maybe Analytical Grammar)

Writing-IEW US Based History Lessons Vol. I

    History-SOTW Vol 3/Biblioplan

    Music-Piano Lessons, Guitar lessons

Band-Trombone with Christian school that he used to attend

    Vocabulary-VCR

Logic---not sure...he loves Fallacy Detective/Thinking Toolbox this year

    Art-Feed My Sheep

    Bible-Community Bible Study

    Boy Scouts-work on Eagle Project

    Youth group, Youth Choir

It's going to be a busy year!

  5. Do you have a backup? I have an external hard drive that I have my backup on. I just had to install a new hard drive on my computer and I was able to restore all of my data. I did have to re-install all of the computer programs. I think you can probably save your email settings...check the import/export functions.

Another option you may have someone help you with...you may be able to use your old hard drive as a slave hard drive and/or transfer your stuff that way. (I think my computer guy did this the last time I got a new computer...about three years ago!)

You may "google" it and see what you can find. I was able to find out how to install a hard drive that way!

I really am not a techno-geek, I just do what I have to do!

I also responded so you wouldn't feel neglected...:)

    Good luck!

  6. I have 2 ds-4th and 7th grade this year and we are using Biblioplan and SOTW 2. I wanted to have something "scheduled" for me and Biblioplan gives good book recommendations and read alouds. My boys are in two different "levels" of the readers, one reads the 3+ books and the other 5+ books. I have found the readers are appropriate. It focuses me to stay on track with read alouds also. We listen to the SOTW on CD and usually pick one other of the suggested spines (Kingfisher) to read. It has worked well for us. They LOVED the study of the Middle Ages! (We're just starting the Reformation...they still want the knights and battles...but oh well!)

I have the AG for SOTW and use it for review questions and for the mapwork. I use Homeschool in the Woods pictures for their timeline book.

We are using IEW's Middle Ages Writing Plans and it is very good.

I have looked at TOG and it looks like a great program, but it is expensive. The price of Biblioplan is right for my budget and seems to be working for us at this stage.

We started homeschooling last year and SOTW was their favorite subject. I didn't want to "fix" what wasn't broken, but found Biblioplan to be a good complement.

We are blessed with a great library and are able to get a lot of the recommended books from there. I have purchased some of the others and will be selling some at the end of the year. (Let me know if you might be interested!:))

    I hope this helps.

It is great to have so many excellent choices!

  7. Holly,

What a small world! I would love for you to take a class. The classes are fun and you go home with a "finished" basket...it really gives you a sense of accomplishment!

Sharon---I just hit "Post Reply" and then type my message in the message part. I haven't tried starting a NEW post...maybe you have to put something in the title for that.

  8. I agree with all of the above posts! I would focus a lot on developing good writing and having them become more independent. I have a 7th grader and I can see a big difference in his maturity and independence this year. He is able to digest a lot of the material on his own and is able to apply it on tests.

I liked Jean in Wisc's comments about getting the Latin out of the way. My 7th ds is doing Latin II (using Latin in the Christian Trivium) this year which will free him up to either continue his study of Latin or to learn a new language.

My goal for next year is to really get him to analyze books. I am reading Deconstructing Penguins right now and am looking at the Teaching the Classics program. I think I need to push him a little more in his discussions.

    Good luck!:)
