We are spending less other than grocery and utilities being about the same. DS18 is going to college in fall so we put more “spare cash” into certificate of deposits. Last year my husband’s employer and other tech companies started retrenching in batches so we also put more into emergency savings.

Our splurge was to stay at a Hampton Inn (under Hilton) instead of Motel 8 when we drove 7 hours south to tour a state university that DS18 was accepted to.

Certificate of deposit rates went up so that is helpful to use. We went for no penalty CDs and the rate was above 4%.

What’s the duration that you prefer? 3 months?

  2. I know one but it’s not going to be suitable for many people. It’s in the forest, gives excellent merit, near vineyards, has a surprisingly number of majors for a tiny college, 1.5 hours from SF, has a strong connection to Loma Linda Medical School if interested in medicine (likelihood of getting in is high as the counselors meet with students several times during the course of their studies). BUT it’s Seventh Day Adventist. So no meat, need to take religion classes (like the Jesuits). It’s possible to get full merit based on very high gpa and SAT 1500. Even half merit makes the school really affordable as the room and board is very low compared to most other schools. It may actually be subsidized by the church. Also, plenty of jobs on campus should the students want one. Pacific Union College. Eta: tuition is around $35k

As others have mentioned, Pacific Northwest Consortium schools give very high merit, especially Puget Sound and Willamette. Whitman has a pre-read for merit.

Oh yeah. I should warn you. Not all kdramas have happy endings. And sometimes the happy ending is … well … just happy enough.

I thought the ending to Crash… was bitter sweet but like you say, bitter sweet was the best they could hope for.

But.... there is a happy ending! The stars are married and just had a baby!!

Fwiw, Chipotle is one of our “safe” restaurants because the entire restaurant is peanut free. OTOH, Chick-FIL-A cooks most of their stuff in peanut oil and is a very unsafe restaurant. If you are eating out while on the road, please be aware of this issue…it doesn’t cross most people’s minds unless they are dealing with the issue.

I knew about Chipotle but not Chick Fil which I had been pushing dh to get something for us to try. We don’t live near one at all, but it’s near his workplace. Crossing that off the list.

You can do so, but honestly the people I know with severe allergies don't really trust other people to "prepare" (including transporting food from grocery store to the snack bag). Despite all efforts you put into this unless you've completely cleared it with the family mentioned (in which case you don't need to ask us because they would give you your answer) they might not eat it anyways (definitely not without re-processing the snacks).

So true, if Dd does not see a label, she’s not eating it. But she’s been at friends’ home recently and their parents know in advance and prepare foods so that she is able to stay for dinner.

Vitamin D when I remember, winter only

CBD for sleep, as needed (when I wake up at 1/2 am and can't go back to sleep)

    CBD cream for achy joints

May I ask which CBD brand? I do take CBD gummies but they are no longer working. And I tried CBD cream for tennis elbow but that hasn’t worked either. I’m really leaning towards vaping if it means no pain and sleeping well. I’ll deal with my lungs in the future.

I didn’t remember Fafsa asking for assets. I remember it was synchronized with IRS income data. CSS profile is the one I remember asking for that stuff. Our cost of attendance is 2.5 times fafsa. That’s why I was thinking you need to redo CSS, but I am just as new to this as you.

Edited to clarify that by cost of attendance I mean Net Price Calculator at privates. So guessing that’s the cost CSS profile produces.

Wait, you said 2.5 times FAFSA which is the number they churn out on the final page, EFC? Are you saying that a private college accepted and wants you to pay 2.5x that amount? Our previous amount was basically full pay because of the rental property so it couldn’t have gone any higher. Actually nvm it could go higher because my friend was charged a tuition and room and board of about $90k.

So the EFC is what we should be able to pay but colleges may overlook that amount and do their own calculations unless the EFC is high and then they follow it.

  8. So after a lot of unsuccessful late night FAFSA submissions I chatted with their support today. Anyone else find the FAFSA difficult to navigate? There’s the student section that the parent can enter for the student. There’s the parent section that I created but forgot about which I don’t think has been used yet. To make any change in parents financials, both need to be logged in. But I had to log out in order to log in to the student account. FAFSA last was nice enough to stand by. If unsuccessful they would need to mail out SAR and then we send it back the original with a turn around timeline of 3-4 weeks.

Turns out there is a place to change the number for assets (non-cash).

I spoke with the CPA recommended here last October and emailed her yesterday. I haven’t attempted it yet but she says CSS cannot be revised. The school will need to change it to reflect FAFSA.

Right now if the aid doesn’t amount to much (based on the EFC - I thought it would be lower based on 0 property), I don’t think I want to move back and lose the rent that pays for the upkeep of the house. And I don’t think the 2 colleges will offer enough to compensate. But they can’t tell me what the numbers are until I appeal. Are EFC numbers taken into account by the colleges?

RPI is looking really good right now. They were really generous. But we’re in CA.

Does that particular school require CSS? Did you file one with them? I wonder if they meant to revise that.

One does the other doesn’t. The one that does require CSS - shouldn’t I also revise it and send it? I couldn’t get into FAFSA yesterday so haven’t looked into which line to correct, but I do remember CSS asking for the value of the rental property. Which means rather than putting down a value I’m supposed to not mention rented property like I’m living there now.

  10. Is FAFSA just for federal aid? And CSS for something else? Even now I’m confused why some schools need both yet others just need FAFSA. I thought it was the CSS that if revised would give us more aid from the school but the one school that had a CSS requirement didn’t mention revising it. If it doesn’t make that much difference I’m not sure I want to move back.

  11. Thanks Lori for taking the time!  We moved in with my parents in order to be in the city for a few years for various reasons, but now that high school is done, we’re moving back to the rental property. It’s our only property located in a rather high COL which made us look like we could afford these private colleges.

So dh just got out of another accepted school tour and asked if we could get more aid. They want us to revise the FAFSA to reduce the value of the asset. They will do a verification later. So I think I’m supposed to go to each accepted school to ask if they will accept a revised  FAFSA? Or send a revised FAFSA to all the accepted schools? Yet both schools never mentioned CSS.

I guess I’ll know within a couple of weeks to see if a revised FAFSA will generate more aid.

  12. When we filed FAFSA in October we were considering moving back to the rental in the summer in order to have more financial aid. But we had to put the value of the asset at the time of submission.

Yesterday we talked with the a financial counselor at a college and mentioned that we would move back to the rental in the summer. She changed the asset to $0 on her end of the FAFSA. She wants us to file an appeal with the school so that we could be considered for more aid.

And, she suggested changing my side of the FAFSA to $0. Otherwise there’s still not going to be any aid with other schools. Should I do this? I thought at the time of submission if we are not living in the rental I need to report it as an asset.

  13. Has anyone gotten a digital perm and more specifically a root perm? Dd has curtain bangs but doesn’t want to put a roller every morning. Her hair is fine so someone suggested a root perm. Plus she tried putting a roller, but it didn’t work like shown on Instagram. It’s more limp in the front than anywhere else.

I’m not sure she’s ready for a digital perm yet though if it lasts only for about 6 months and includes the root and seems to be the same price, might as well try it.

Is 17 yo too young to be getting perms? Actually when I was 16 yo I got one and really regretted it since I have course hair and had a lot of hair when I was a teen.

Yoga is great for working core strength.  So is ballet.  Horseback riding - provided you engage your core to sit properly.

there are like six layers of abdominal muscles and all of them need to be worked..

Eww 6 layers? I want to start working on the first. I’m feeling a little motivated by this thread, so I’m going to start planking. How many layers would that target?
