  1. In my current state we are required to do 180 days. Tomorrow will be day 180. It's actually really annoying to have to count these stupid days when I see a teenagers Fac ebook page saying something like "We watched a dvd on aliens in history today!" or see pics of kids having end-of-the-year parties. I'm not against parties I just don't want to keep attendance! lol

  2. Border Collie mix: Mckenzie but we call her Kenzie.

Coon hound (former abused dog who found us) Mable.

    Terrier-Golden Retriever mix Sandy.

Chihuahua Itty Bitty  but we call her Itty, Itty Bitty, Roo Roo, Roo, Itty Bitty RooRoo. Don't ask why!

    Mini Dachshund Waffle.

    cat: Tiger

    cat: Bindi

cat/dog: Giles(he really is part cat and part dog!)

    cockatiel: Scotty

    cockatiel: Dotty

    both are females

  3. If you buy color at a store like Walmart, it won;'t last as long and it is more damaging to your hair. Buying it from a beauty supply store, using what professionals use, is less damaging and lasts longer.

  4. I had to look twice to make sure this post wasn't started by Spycar.  I don't agree with all the hate sent his way.  Try actually reading the article to see WHY he wants it before judging him so harshly.  I think some people just like to cause controversy on here and like to hate certain people.

I don't hate him and I've even tried homeschooling his way but this is really bizarre, to go around mailing fliers asking for people to send him their pee!!!

  5. Today I got a flyer addressed to 'postal customer' in the mail from Art Robinson at the "Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine". My kids had fun looking for logical fallacies and enjoying the particularly pointless graphs... But I still can't figure out why he wants me to submit a urine sample. Is he trying to sell me something? Regain his lost reputation as a scientist? Is he just a total nutcase? I thought he'd be too busy denying global warming and picketing abortion clinics or running for office or building underground bunkers or something to want my neighborhood's bodily fluids. According to the flyer "We need samples of your urine in order to calibrate analytical procedures that can revolutionize the evaluation of personal chemistry - and thereby improve our health, our happiness and prosperity, and even the academic performance of our children in school."

    Thoughts??

    Um. That's REALLY weird!

  6. My dh recently got a job that is moving us from SC to TX so out of need I've dropped some stuff and changed some stuff. Started doing written narrations after the kids read something and just discussing things after I read or they listen to something. My new obsession is audiobooks. They listen to MOH, we talk about it. They listen to SOTW, we talk about it.

I just got Apologia Flying Creatures audiobook and they will be listening to that, discussing. If I feel like it and we have the materials, we may do some activities. If not, no big deal.

I changed them t TT math so I don't get behind in checking math like I do with Saxon. Adding LOF and letting them check it themselves. Also key to measurement for fun. One page a day.

    Reading some poetry.

    Listening to Jim Weiss.

But in the past 2 weeks, my boys have helped their daddy put down laminate flooring, take apart and destroy 2 broken computers, among other stuff.

They collected bugs and frogs. We kept a carpenter bee that had a broken wing for 3 days, they gave it flowers and water. It died today.

I've done some CM-type grammar and Daily Grammr with them and found out they retain way more by just doing a little at a time and together.

    They've been memorizing poetry.

My 14 told me she'd rather do workbooks than written narrations because the narrations make her THINK and workbooks don't.

Maybe when we get this house sold and move to TX I will keep this up. Maybe. lol

  7. Ok, another question on this apparently year old thread (that I just discovered last night).

How many of you are atheists directly because of how Christians have behaved, things they've said or done, that started you questioning, or things they said or did that caused you to no longer believe?

Obviously if you never believed or doubted for other reasons this doesn't apply to you but I am curious because I know Christians have caused people (including myself), to stop going to church, or a specific church, and this thread made me wonder how many have fallen away from God Himself because of other people.

  8. I really appreciate all the advice, but...well, not that I necessarily expected consistency, but I'm getting conflicting advice and it's hard to know who is right. Let me try to summarize the different solutions people have given (and did I mention that I appreciate all of this??):

    • Don't do all the problems; do only the ones ds needs to do. (Does this work over the long haul? Has anyone tried it for years and still gotten good scores on the exams? I want a permanent solution.)
    • Sit down with ds and work every problem. Maybe on a whiteboard or orally for some of them. With direction from me, he should be able to get through the lesson much more quickly.
    • Work at half speed, split up lessons into two sections. Or otherwise "work sideways"...
    • Set a timer and let him do as many problems as he can, don't have him work longer than that.
    • Change the curriculum, because Saxon might be a bad fit for an accelerated student but some disagree with this. BA, Singapore, MM
    • Racing for candy
    • Use a "Robinson schedule"...sorry I don't know what this means. I found this http://www.robinsoncurriculum.com/ but nothing about a schedule?
    • Consider that he might have visual-motor difficulties.

    :confused1:

Also, just to put everybody's minds at ease, I rarely make him do 2-3 hours of math in one day. I'm just saying that's how long it takes him all together to get through a lesson.

Art Reed has written articles about why problems should not be skipped in Saxon but I can't find it now that I'd like to. I will TRY to explain why but his explanations are much better then mine.

The way Saxon is set up is they teach a concept in a lesson then review those things that are taught but the problems get harder without extra explanation. So if you skip problems, say all the odds, or whatever, eventually your child will have a very hard time understanding the math because he's missed some. Not all math currics are like this, I think only Saxon is. I've tried Saxon more than once with each of my kids and really prefer it and Life of Fred together. I don't let my lkids skip problems so with my 7 and 8 yos one lesson may take 2 or 3 days, all depending on how they do. My 10 and 11 yos usually do one lesson in about an hour and my 14 yo takes about an hour and 1/2.

Having said all that I have to add that my 11 yo had to learn over time that I will make him do ALL his assigned work and if he chose to daydream and goof off and take literally 9 hours to do what should not have taken moire than 3 to finish, that was his problem. But he was 11 when he learned this, not 7. My current and past 7 yos never have more than an 1 and 1/2 hours total sitting down school work.

I also have to add I've switched m y kids to TT and LOF math because we are moving and my dh is going to work in another state leaving me behind to sell our house, take care of my parents (who live with us), and our kids so for the sake of MY sanity, I've switched. But, I plan on going back to Saxon ASAP because I feel it's a very strong math curric that works. If only someone else would grade it like TT!

  9. He's 7. He hasn't skipped anything, he just started early and went through 1st & 2nd grade stuff relatively quickly. Then started slowing down a lot with 3rd & 4th grade math.

I wouldn't force a 7 yo to sit through hours of math. How about if you set a timer for a certain amount of time and whatever he gets done in that amount of time he gets done? Just don't skip the problems! Saxon builds understanding through the problems and he will be lost if you skip.

  10. I wonder where I got the idea that Geometry was first?? Oh well. I think I'll get Apples and try it with both kids. Thanks!!

That's what I did and don't get discouraged with it because Apples starts with adding 4 + 2 or whatever. I think that's better for a kid who isn't strong in math to build confidence because LOF looks at math so very differently. That's one of my favorite things about it because I was horrible at math as a kid.

  11. Do you really think people are going to proudly post that yes, they do indeed consider anyone who lives in a mobile home to be white trash?

I voted "yes" to be contrary, but apparently 7 other people voted yes as well. I seriously doubt it means they firmly hold that position

but we do have a bunch of members, so I suppose it's possible.

I didn't vote since I live in one myself but I am really curious about the people who voted always!

  12. I agree with you!  I was quoted in a book several years ago and interviewed quite a bit for another one (both by the same author-parenting books).  The process was much different than this.  The author herself did in fact go to a parenting message board I was on, gave a bio about herself and stated her intention.  We were given contact information to contact her off the site for more information.  Those she opted to interview got consent letters to sign (digitally) and send back and then we were sent a series of questions every few weeks, and could decide how many of each set to answer.  She then used the information gathered as tidbits within the book and every interviewed whether quoted or not were listed in the acknowledgements at the beginning of the book.  It is unlikely I would have participated nor would many of the others if she had sent someone else to the site I was on asking for 1-2 word responses to a question.  She already had done her brainstorming, she came to us on the site for ancedotes.  That is an author I can support and give information to, not someone coming on here with a list of emotional things already(given as examples) and getting angry when she is asked to give more information.

That sounds legit. The OP doesn't. I could be wrong, it's happened before.

I was in a grocery store once, put my bread at the end of my order because I HATE squished bread. I like nice, square pieces of bread. These 2 women behind me came up, pushed the stick that separated our orders into my bread and squished it. I asked them not to squish my bread and moved it back. I was polite but firm. They said I had no business wearing my Christian t-shirt. So I asked them how being a Christian means it's ok for them to squish my bread.

This is the same attitude of some here. Because we are homeschoolers doesn't mean we should be DOORMATS, for pete's sake. Why is it impolite to refuse to answer someone who is being vague and rude herself and letting her KNOW why you're refusing to answer?

  13.

I don't take breastfeeding advice from a male pediatrician or even a woman who tried to nurse once and calls herself a Lactation Consultant.  Nope!  I don't take parenting advice from mom's who have only had 1 or 2 children (I've got 4!).  I don't take advice on teaching reading from someone who has never worked with a dyslexic!  I don't take cooking advice from someone who gets in the kitchen once every 3 months.  I don't take advice on music from someone who only works the radio.  I don't take advice on homeschooling from someone who doesn't have personal experience to draw from.  Speak from the wisdom of experience or be quiet.

Exactly.  He could easily exploit the homeschooling community by simply studying the forums.  Instead, he wants us to make it easy on him and put all of our dirty laundry in one easy thread.

I share here out of a desire to be a part of a HS community, to help others and find help for myself.  We work pretty well this way.

    I agree with this 100%!

  14. Even if the intentions aren't great, I don't really care.  Why would people ask this question if they wanted to portray homeschooling negatively?  They could simply make stuff up.

I don't think the issues with homeschooling aren't anything people couldn't imagine or guess at.

They could butit would more authentic to ask the question, then twist it around to make it a negative thing. Some people are quite good at that.
