  1. I think it has effected their upbringing in that we promote hard work and academic excellence in hopes of receiving scholarships. So far so good. I have a morbid fear of borrowing money my parents passed to me courtesy of their parents living in fear of losing their farms. What the kids choose to study is up to them. I didn't resent being poor though. That may make a difference. My dad owned his own mechanic shop. He could have made more working at a factory but would have hated it so I have a background in "follow your dreams". My leaving my career to homeschool is a similar choice.

  2. We have Dollar General here, but what I find is that their prices aren't that good. I get better deals elsewhere. I think what keeps them in business around here is that they are placed in poorer areas that are walkable. So for some people that is "the" place they can get to for basic stuff. Unfortunately, they aren't saving any money though! It sucks.

Hmmm, ours under prices Walmart. I'd go anyway. Choices are nil.

  3. Okay! Help me here - I’ve been kind of sheltered in chain stores apparently and didn’t realize things like the Dollar Store actually being a dollar. What are all these Dollar Generals I’m passing? Hardware stores? Grocery stores? A little of everything?

A sort of modern general store or mini Walmart. Everything is NOT a dollar. They

Have food, clothing, toiletries, cleaning supplies, a few housewares. It's not extensive but far more convenient than driving 1/2 hour.

  4. Ok I'm seriously baffled by the Walmart comment. There is literally nowhere else to shop where I am. It's either Walmart or the mall. Which...the mall. You'll pay three times as much for stuff. But I really have no complaints about Walmart's stuff.

We don't have a mall. I have to drive 1/2 hour to Wslmart. Dollar General is it. Rural America's choices are not vast.

  5. Tell me you ate hamburgers and hot dogs with sliced white bread. We can’t have been the only ones.

Uh oh...if I'm still doing this? My parents grew up honest to God hungry and barefoot. I grew up in the '70's. I wadn't hungry but dad hunted, we had a garden and the family raised hogs at my uncles farm we butchered. Honestly I never felt bad about hand me downs, etc. By the time I cared in jr. High I worked to buy anything I thought I had to have. Maybe it is in whether it bothers you or not. I'm using my mom's, grandmothers' and MIL'S dishes, glasses, furniture, etc. It works fine. I'm happy. S'all good. *typed on my 10 yo computer :)

  6. I have finally concluded I will just never be a person to whom it occurs that I could buy something. The habit of jury rigging or doing without is just my default.

  7. I see nothing wrong with grilled cheese and a can of soup/raw veggies, make your own aandwiches, meatball or other hot subs

I briolette some cheese on a hoagie roll then warm meatballs in pizza sauce, micro deli roast beef and micro peppers and onions in a separate container, etc. In a pinch toaster waffles (I make my own but whatever), sausage in micro, fruit. Also I broil hash brown patties and sausage too. I cook pork roast, shred some with bbq to reheat for sandwiches with cole slaw and season some with southwest spices to roll in tortillas.

  8. Does anyone else find this interesting? It explains me better than Myers-Briggs, etc. The struggle is how to apply this to myself to make changes I want to make. Some I've worked out through the years but knowledge is power, right? I'm a rebel by the way.

  9. So, I did well until about 10:30pm or so, when I ate a bunch of tortilla chips and goldfish crackers before bed. Ugh. But I got up this morning and added them to yesterday's total. Used 6 of my weeklies for that. Plus had already used my fit points, so no blue circle for me. Right before bed is when I tend to binge on something unhealthy. Always carb heavy. Have got to work on that. I'd already had some greek yogurt with 1/2 a banana and some peanuts, so I wasn't truly hungry. I wonder if I'm craving salt or something...when I'm eating healthy I tend to not have processed food and end up with a LOT less salt. And it was definitely the salt I wanted. Hmmm...

Not sure this will help but I crave salt like crazy, much more than sweet. Picles, olives or pickled jalapeños help me kill the craving quckly.

  10. Adding, I do think the girls gain confidence, learn about presenting themselves, our troop uses funds to learn budgeting and they pick a charity to receive a donation. They don't learn that if parents do the work. GS cookies and BS popcorn were/are the only product sales I let the littler kids do.
