  1. Haven't done Omnibus 3 yet, but we started with Omnibus 1 this year. It has been a hit at our house.

I would recommend you look through all the reading to make sure that their isn't anything that you might find objectionable. In O1, a couple books did make reference to loosey-goosey women, kwim. I would imagine certain literature in O3 will as well (1984). I personally read those sections and decided for myself whether or not the passage deserved a censor (black marker) over it.

Also, if your dc is enrolled in the live omnibus classes, the instructor emails all the parents at the beginning of the class year and gives you a "heads-up" on those passages. The instructors also don't dwell on the negative words or situations. I really appreciated this.

All in all, we really enjoy omnibus and plan to go through all 6 in the series.

  2. Another vote for VP.

We do the self-paced online for 2-6th grades and live online Omnibus for older grades. I love that the classes are conversational-style, and the dc are learning a lot. Textbook-based history just wasn't working for them and didn't work for me either. If I can't get excited, or even mildly interested in a subject, then we're just not going to have a good time learning it.

VP classes are really a breath of fresh air for us.

  3. We are doing our second self-paced course this year. Last year when I was deciding whether to enroll, I had my dc watch the sample lessons. The younger dc (fourth grade) really like it. The older dc liked it too, but dc thought that because it had talking statutes and sphinx, that it might be too childish for someone as dc (sixth grader...HA! that's a LAUGH!)

I did end up enrolling the younger dc. Dc really loved doing OT/Ancient Egypt and we enrolled again this past fall for NT/Ancient Rome, and is enjoying it even more. Older dc will actually sit with younger dc to catch the lesson and try the games......so much for being toooo mature!

They both GENUINELY enjoy history this way. And these kids never enjoyed doing history before, especially not "book" history. Me neither.

I really like the way the material is presented, to me it feels like I'm watching a really good "reality" soap opera...I wanna know what comes next, who does what, who says what ( even though I already know). Maybe silly of me, but I was never taught history this way either....and I kinda enjoy watching too! :D

Bottom line: It really works for our homeschool.

    My 2 cents.

  4. I grew up watching Que Pasa, USA on tv here in South Florida. It was put on by PBS and was the first bi-lingual television program on US television. The shows have the typical 30 minute sit-com format and they chronicle the lives of a Cuban exile family living in Miami and how it affects the three generations who live in the house (the grandparents, the parents and the kids who are becoming Americanized). It's a good show and funny and deals with a lot of issues pertaining to culture (and the clashes thereof) and of course the pain of exile. It's bi-lingual so your dd can probably follow the story pretty well even and a lot of times a line of dialogue will be repeated in both languages. The Spanish they speak is VERY Cuban though with the accent and certain words that only Cubans use, but for the most part it is still proper Spanish. ;) :D I think Youtube has some episodes or maybe PBS's website. :)

I LOVED that show!!!! Especially the "embarasada" episode!

  5. My dcs are taken various classes through VP. Some online and some self-paced. Although we are not enrolled in the diploma program, our experiences with VP have been wonderful. I really recommend them highly. I am currently toying with the idea of possibly enrolling them for the diploma program, but I'm not sure whether it would benefit our particular circumstances.

Bottom line: Excellent program. No work for mom, other than making sure your dc logs in and attends class on time. Work load and homework very reasonable, challenging, but offers lots of guidance. Dc love the fact that they can also chat live with instructors and other classmates.

    HTH

  6. Have you looked at VP's history, particularly the self-paced online class? Neither of my kids were into history and would frequently complain about the BORING subject.....UNTIL on a whim, I signed them up for this. I can honestly say they LOVE doing history now, and will even request to sign in of the weekend. Very highly recommended for elementary and middle school years. We also do their live Omnibus classes, which are also a hit! :D

  7. I was surprised that the first person you spoke with couldn't tell you this. I received an email from KB a while back telling me that this would be the case.

Really????? I never got an email from them at all.

I wish I had....it would have saved me from going into panic mode.

The first lady I spoke with had no clue about the differences in the licenses prior to the buyout. Maybe that's why she quickly referred me to tech support? IDK. Anyway, I guess it's resolved.

  8. ....so much for low prices.

Not that I have anything against Christian Books, it's just that every time I price shop them, they have been more expensive EVERY time when compared to Pennywise, Rainbow, Amazon, etc...

I LOVED Pennywise. Their prices were low and offered free shipping at certain times of the year.

    WAAAAHHHH!

What is it with all these companies getting bought out lately? This is the second one since December!?!

  9. KINETIC MOMS......HELP!

This past fall, I bought the Algebra 1 and 2 cds with the license to download multiple times on different computers for my kids. I happen to go to the kinetic books website and to my horror the company has been bought out by Perfection Learning, and now THEY changed to licensing options.

I don't know how this will affect the cds I have in the future (whether they will work after a certain time has past). I called the company's customer service number and, while the lady was very nice, she really didn't know anything about it because the acquisition was so recent. She took my name and number and told me tech support on the would call me back.

    Still waiting.

  10. If I might ask, which "free college program in OK" are you referring to? We live in OK and I don't know what program this might be?

I do know that as an OK resident, students can apply towards special admissions and tuition programs, but wouldn't your dgs be considered a FL resident now?

Sorry for the confusion on my part.

  11. We are also using the HP series as Lit, but with a TWIST :D

I'm having dc read the books in English, discussing the literary aspects, etc., then afterwards we will be rereading the series in Spanish as part of our Foreign Language. All the books are available in Spanish and now are also available in Latin! (specifically, the first 2 books as of yet...)

    My 2 cents on HP.

  12. I think the answer is it depends. I have never felt the need for an accredited diploma. I have had friends that felt differently. One thing to keep in mind is the diplomas can also hurt and not always be a good thing.

An example of it hurting: A friend's child was homeschooled but used an accredited program. Since the diploma was issued from the "accredited" school which was out of state, she was not considered an instate graduate. This meant she was not eligible for the HOPE scholarship money the state offers to students for attending in state universities.

It had NEVER occurred to me that using an accredited program could cause those kinds of implications.

WOW!!! It hadn't even occurred to me that an accredited diploma from out of state would make you an out-of-state grad!!!! YIKES!

DH is faculty at one of the local universities here, and this would have HUGE implications for us (read: faculty kids can go for FREE). We would NOT want dc to be considered Out-Of-$tate $tudent$....COUGH!!!!!! :ack2:
