  1. My dd is doing Russian 1 through Landry academy online. She loves, loves, loves it! They use the Golossa textbook series which I really like as well. The teacher is an Army linguist who speaks several different languages, but seems to specialize in Russian language. She is very approachable and funny too! Dd is learning a lot. Highly recommended. :001_smile:

  2. When dd was 12, we sent her unaccompanied on a flight cross country to the opposite coast to attend a month long camp. At 13, we sent her with her team to Italy, Moldova, and Russia. I would have loved to go with her, but I simply could not afford two tickets versus one ticket at that time. She was gone for a month and it was an incredible experience for her.

This year we will be doing more traveling abroad, but this time I will be going....only because I don't want to miss out on the fun anymore!

Let me tell you, my dh and I got PLENTY of guff and push back from friends and family members on our decision to let her travel without us. But I would do it again, no regrets on our choice....only wish I could have afforded to go too.

  3. Thanks for posting this video. DH and I watched the whole thing and found that we agreed with a lot of it.

DH has been a tenured university professor for >15 years and, unfortunately, agreed with the dismal statistics and the rising costs. We both have our graduate degrees, but honestly feel we need to steer our dc into something other than getting into student loans, like we did...took us years to finally pay them all off with A LOT of frugality.

We really liked the last ten minutes or so of the video, where they suggest that distance and online education is the future, 25% of colleges according to the video. I really believe this to be the case. I do believe dc need an education, but I just don't think it necessarily needs to be a brick and mortar campus, with room and board costs to boot. Online learning can be more flexible and more cost effective ( the ability to live at home, to have a job than doesn't conflict with classes, do internships or apprenticeships without conflict, etc.)

Granted, not every career can be done online, but at least all the general ed requirements can be. And who knows what the future will bring....:001_smile:

  4. Oh Lavender, please PM. I have plenty of info from the retail pharmacy side, so I'd love to hear about the hospital side.

    Hi FourOaks,

I just PM'd you. Other than the types of medications involved (IVs, injectables, and chemo), there is not much difference between the retail side and the hospital side. The "negatives" apply to the profession as a whole, they are not site related. Emily's Act was the result of what happened at an Ohio children's hospital. Also, there is reason why hospital security offices are always positioned near the pharmacy, along with panic buttons. Believe me, I know.

  5. I volunteer in a hospital pharmacy and completely agree that she should either volunteer or work at one before she decides. *I* would never want to be a Pharmacist based on what I've observed, but I wouldn't mind being a Tech (and plan to throughout school).

If you work in a hospital pharmacy, as I do....then you know exactly what I'm talking about! :001_smile:

  6. Violet pretty much answered your question. Really the quickest path is the 6 year program with a school that offers this, but ONLY if your daughter is CERTAIN that pharmacy is what she wants. If there is any doubt in her mind, then I would not do the 6 year program, precisely because it is considered "professional school" and those classes taken may not apply toward a BS degree later, if she changes her mind while in the 6 year program.

Also, you may want to try and have her get a job in a pharmacy, maybe as a clerk, to start to let her see how a pharmacy works and what the pharmacists and techs do on a daily basis. This may help her decide if this career is for her. She will see the good and the bad....yes, there is bad. I can PM you more on this if you really want to know.

  7. Pharmacy school itself is a four year process, just like medical school. So after she gets a BS degree, she would still have to do all four years of pharmacy school. Years 1-3 of pharmacy school are all didactic classroom years, the final fourth year consists of monthly rotations to different pharmacy sites....hospital pharmacy, community pharmacy, nuclear pharmacy, etc., usually 10-15 different sites in all, depending on the school.

In other words, there is no way to shorten your time once you are accepted into pharmacy school. No different than med school.

  8. I graduated pharmacy school in the nineties and I can tell you that a lot has changed since then. Today most pharmacy school require a BS before applying. The days of getting in with an AA are pretty much gone now because virtually all pharmacy schools have eliminated the BSPharm in favor of the PharmD degree. If your student is ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that they want to do pharmacy, then a 6 year program out of high school is the way to go...it is the most time and cost effective for you and your student. Otherwise if there is any doubt, have your student get a BS degree in any science or math first, then apply to pharmacy school if he or she still wants to go. This may be a safer route because all those science and math classes can translate well into medical school, dental school, etc., if they decide against pharmacy.

In terms of high school classes, select classes as if your student is going into medical school....meaning biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, calculus, physics, and foreign language. (pharmacists need to be able to speak with patients in more than just English....Spanish is highly recommended....also great asset when applying to pharmacy jobs).

    Hope this helps.

  9. For Apologia science classes:

    redwagontutorials.com

They also offer prerecorded classes via mp3 download and flash drives. Dd14 is enrolled in Biology live feed class this year

Actually, I happily discovered Apologia Academy today! The same people who make apologia science now offer live and recorded online classes. They also offer Bible and world view courses as well.

I'm thinking about scheduling in their chemistry classes for next year. I would love to know if anyone has used them before.

  10. Just found this post, thought I'd add my cents.....

Veritas Press Scholars Academy ....very happy with their classes. We've enrolled again this fall for several classes.

Landry Academy.....will be taking one class this fall, I'll post how well it goes.

We will also be trying Potters School for computer classes.

I think it's great to have a thread with online classes listed, especially from experienced families, to make it easier to "shop around" for classes that parents may want to "farm out". :001_smile:

  11. Veritas classes run on Wimba classroom, which has a Java component to it. Anyway just for kicks, I tried to sign into my dd's class on our iPad. No luck, I could not get Wimba to completely load because it will not recognize Java, I did not even get to the part where it checks audio and microphone.

Thinking out of the box here....one way that has occurred to me, although I have not tried it, would be to "cloud" into an existing computer from your iPad and have the computer run Wimba and Java while you dc watches it on iPad. There is a free app called Teamviewer that is supposed to do just this. I am thinking of trying this myself.

Wonder what to do about the microphone issue though?

  12. Personally, I felt it was just right. I expected there to be lots of reading and discussion, and it was exactly that. The quizzes, homework, test, etc. I felt were fair and not difficult for the student who had actually read all the assignments. No hesitation in recommending omnibus to the student who enjoys reading. My ds is more of a reluctant reader, but he likes the discussion aspect and puts up with all the reading.

  13. We did logic 1 and art 1 last year with veritas. My dd really enjoyed both and this year she will be doing logic 2 and art 2 , among other classes with vp. The classes are not overwhelming, they do assign homework even in art, but grading is very fair. The art instructor is WONDERfUL and gives lots of pointers on Art homework. Dd describes logic as "a lot of fun", with lots of thought provoking discussions lead by the instructor and issues debated on both sides by the students.

Although we haven't done French, I seriously would not hesitate in enrolling your dc. Dd took their Latin 1 and, although syllabus looks intimidating, vp takes them step by step and the kids really do learn an amazing amount.

BTW, dd was also in eighth grade when we did this. Her classes last year were logic, art, Latin, and omnibus.

    Hope this helps.

  14. The last time that I called and spoke to a Kinetic book rep, she said geometry would be out by late July or August. I have not seen any changes or updates to their website lately to indicate that this is the case though.

We are in the same boat. We recently finished kb algebra 1 and were hoping to start kb geometry in the fall. However, since we have not heard anything about an "official" out date, I have started looking at other books.

We have decided to use Jacobs geometry and, assuming my dd passes the placement test, we hope to enroll her in the live online VP geometry class (they use this book).

I looked at TT, but all the proofs ( 3 new proofs each lesson) seemed to me to be too much when added all up, especially since standardized test do not really test on proofs. :tongue_smilie:

Anyway, this is just what we have decided to do.
