  1. As long as he knows that he will be revisiting that material, and has no problem with that.... I'd be happy to see it!

Then again... I'm the same person who reads through all my books for the semester before it even starts... :tongue_smilie:Even back in high school when I was busy slacking off and doing no work, I still read the entire textbooks within the first few days of class.

DD isn't at that stage yet, but I sure hope she still has the love of learning that she wants to read ahead!

  2. Up until now, we've been using materials I gathered on my own and kindergarten/first grade workbooks bought from Target and such.

Tonight, I purchased our first real curriculums!!!!! Should I be this excited? :D

(In case you are wondering... I got GTG, AAS, SM, Miquon. Still need to get L'art De Dire and Elemental Science)

    So... questions.

    1. With Singapore, do you use the tests and extra practice? And where can I find the Word Problems book? Do I NEED the word problems book? For now I went ahead and got the extra practice, but didn't get the tests... I figured I would know if she was getting it or not getting it, even without the tests... right?

    2. Has anyone bought and printed out the Elemental Science, Intro to Science? (I know the creator is somewhere on these boards... maybe she can answer me?? :D) Is it all black and white? If I bought it on my computer, could I save it to a disk or external drive and print it from another? I don't have a printer at home, but I do have access to free b/w printing at school. I really wanted to get it and start, but I guess I could wait for the printed books in late September... :crying:

I think that's all.... back to my excitement over buying "real school" stuff...

  3. We will probably start in 1st or 2nd grade with SSL.

We were going to start now, but once I started looking forward I realized that after SSL there isn't much until 3rd/4th grade. So I'll keep an eye on some of the Latin programs, and once I feel like she'll be ready for those in a year, I'll start Song School.

  4. Wow! I am definitely not glad you all are in this situation, but I must say, it helps to read this thread and realize that others are dealing with issues and still successfully homeschooling (heck, successfully parenting!)

    Physical:

Migraines. It started as one every now and then, and eventually become one 4-5 days a week. I was on topomax for about a year, which was successfully managing them, but am in the process of finding a new doctor, and the migraines are back. This affects my life in that sometimes the fun stuff suffers, but I can usually suffer through them to get the necessities taken care of.

Endometriosis. This affects my life in a huge way. I get severe, severe cramps and bowel "issues" :tongue_smilie:. One day a month I am completely and totally out of commission. If we can get to a friends house or to my parents house that day I usually just take a percocet and knock myself out for the day, if it is just Jenna and I at home she gets a free day to do... anything... while Mommy lays on the couch. Other days of the month I have severe cramping that keeps me up at night but I am able to at least get some things done. I hate this disease. If I could get rid of anything, it would be this.

Chronic back pain. I was in two serious car accidents, at 16 and 18, (both with totalled cars). I was in physical therapy for over 2 years, had a number of back surgeries, and still deal with the pain. Low back pain from my accidents, and high back pain from my large books!!

Insomnia. Is this physical? Between the cramps, the back pain, my mind racing, and my natural night owl-ness, sleep is not a common activity. I'm always tired, and get migraines more when it is really bad, but I've learned to adjust.

Blood sugar issues. They haven't quite figured it out yet. I've been told twice that I was diabetic, once that I was hypoglycemic, twice that I was prediabetic, and a couple times I was nothing. Uhm. Okay. It is especially bad when I'm on my period, I get very, very low blood sugars.

    Emotional/Mental

Aspergers. Eh. I mean... it affects my life, but... I'd be a different person without it. I don't really think of it as a problem, just part of me. Maybe it is all the NT people who have a problem. :D Realistically, it does affect my life, in all the ways you'd expect.

Bipolar. Diagnosed at 17. Affects my life a lot less now than it has before. I'm controlling it fairly well.

    Anxiety disorder. Phobias. Some OCD-traits.

Aren't I exciting? :lol:And I'm only 25.... they say it goes downhill from here, I'm scared!

  5. I always arrange to meet somewhere. I am out and about often, so I am rarely going out of my way, and since I live out in the country and it is just DD and I, I feel better about being somewhere public.

I don't generally buy off of craigslist or pick things up from freecycle because I don't feel comfortable going to someone else's home. Again, it is just DD and I, so if I'm getting something, she is with me. The funny thing is, if it is just me, I'll go. :tongue_smilie:

  6. I wouldn't be too concerned for now, but I agree that I'd keep in mind it may not be a long term friendship, or the friendship may go through many different phases in the next couple years. 9 and a slow developing 14 isn't so bad, but 10 and 15? 11 and 16?

I had many older friends when I was a child. We often grew apart, or the relationship turned into more of an older sibling/cousin type of relationship, and then back into friends as I reached adulthood.

I would probably make it a point to meet the parents though. But, I like to know the parents of all my daughter's friends.

  7. I actually don't think the problem is secondary sources, it is the tertiary sources that create a problem. Things like textbooks are tertiary sources. The writers of most textbooks pull from secondary sources for their information, so it is twice removed from the primary. Sort of like the childhood game of telephone, if you get far enough down the line the message gets twisted.

There are many quality secondary sources out there, but I don't know how to find good sources for children. I use search engines on my college library website to find most of my sources. JSTOR is the primary search engine I use, but I'm pretty sure you have to pay for the use of it.

  8. That guy... wow. Just amazing. How could someone even bear to see their children go hungry? I'd do anything, ANYTHING, if my daughter was going to literally not have food for dinner that night.

But I just had to comment, because your church has made an amazing show of God's love today, for all of those families. It made my day reading about all that way done for the families of your community.

  9. Is being unable to let go of things part of Aspergers? For some strange reason, I've never made that connection, but honestly your son sounds similar to me.

I often make the mistake of holding onto friendships that are toxic to me because I can't let go. I also will often obsess over mistakes I've made in regards to relationships/friendships, and consider how I could have done it differently, etc.

Anyways, back to the topic at hand... I'm just wondering if the girl knows that he has Aspergers? That might change how she views the situation, if he would be comfortable telling her. Most of the people in my life don't know I am, but they do understand that I'm different somehow. The few people that I've talked to about it say they feel totally different about some situations after knowing this.

Could he write her a letter? Maybe with your help so it doesn't come across as too much? I'm a big letter writer myself. I always have trouble expressing myself in person, but I can put everything down on paper. Plus, it could be easier for this girl to read a letter and digest what he has to say before she responds.

I will definitely pray for him, that he is able to find peace within himself, whether she comes around or not. I understand what he is going through. It is tough when you don't feel as though closure has been made and there is more to say.

  10. I've done some research...and, you can rest easy in knowing Carrera is a good product. I found a few reviews from hobby fanatics and Carrera was mentioned as one of the top three for slot cars...with Carrera a favorite for beginner and children sets.

    Smiles!

    ~Holly

Thank you. I've decided to scale Christmas WAAAAAY back this year, with the goal of buying quality over quantity. I'll definitely be checking into a Carrera set though.

  11. The truth? Our mess (and laundry) generally builds and builds until we can't move and have nothing to wear, and then I bust my butt to get it all done in one day.

I am at school 15-30 hours a week, plus DD has dance and soccer and HER schoolwork, plus I have homework that needs to be done. Keeping a spotless house is just not a priority for us.

During the summer though, we keep it clean by cleaning as we go. It is just DD and I, so it's pretty simple to keep things straight.

  12. I can understand the issue on making a profit at the library, but complaining about the noise? I guess everyone should go to the children's section, because it is not quiet! (Not necessarily loud, but definitely talking. :D)

I'm hoping we won't run up against a problem. Starting next week, I have class on Tuesday mornings until 12, and than DD has dance at 4:30, so we will be going to the library during the in between time to get some school work done. But the librarians know us pretty well already and the children's section will be nice and empty, so hopefully no problems! :D

  13. Well, we are just starting out, but I can tell you my plan:

K: American history (focusing on the major people, major events, landmarks, symbols, etc.)

    K summer: prehistory

    1st: SOTW1

    2nd: SOTW2

    3rd: SOTW 3

    4th: SOTW 4

    5th: Geography

6th: DD's choice - We'll pick a topic she is particularly interested in and study it in depth.

    7th: American history

    8th: Ancients

    9th: middle ages

    10th: early modern

    11th: modern

12th: 2 independent studies. DD will pick a theme/geographical area and do extensive reading/research in it, culminating in a large research paper along with various other small assignments. She'll do one study per semester.

So we will do two 4 year rotations, a year of geography, 2 years of American history, and DD will get 2 years to decide what she wants to study. This way I will cover everything, plus allow DD a little room to explore her interests.

  14. Go Colts!!!!!

This. HUGE, HUGE, HUGE Colts fan. HUGE Football fan, period. Sundays in the fall are dedicated to Church and Football. See, Football even gets a capital F in this house, it's just that important.

I even play on a fantasy league. :D

DD loves the Cowboys. -sigh- How disappointing! She's hoping to go to her first game this season.
