  1. I didn't let people visit until the kids were 2 wks old. That included friends, relatives, co-workers...  I also didn't take the babies anywhere besides their own doctors' appts. Why? Both were born during flu season.  DD was 6 wks early.  We have had several friends and family members with very sick babies (either born that way or acquired). And we wanted time with the babies before the whirlwind of out-of-town visitors hit, expecting the house to be perfect and meals to be cooked and tour guides to be available.

babies were ours, not the property of the world, so that was our decision to make.

  2. My DH and son, along with 12 other boys and 3 other adults, left for Camp Baldwin (Eastern Oregon) this a.m.  The entire troop will be working on Horsemanship while there in addition to several other badges of choice.  My son plans to finish up Swimming, First Aid, and Environmental Science as well as see what else interested him during his time there.

  3. We all have planners.  DH and I share teaching responsibilities but I choose the curriculum and make the lesson plans. I then write the assignments in my planner, usually a week in advance.  On Monday, the kids copy their assignments for the week into their planners.  As they finish an assignment, they check it off in their planners.  Once DH or I have reviewed their work and feel it is acceptable, we check it off in ours.  We've had problems in the past when I have assumed that DH had checked all of the assignments for the day prior to releasing the kids.  It's hard to move forward in math or with a paper when the child didn't grasp a previous concept.  This system corrects that for us.

  4. My 7 yo had them at this time last summer.  She did not get them from the vax.  She picked them up at summer camp.  She was vaxed, but the doc said that about 20% of vax'd kids get them anyway.

My son, on the other hand, did not get them when my daughter did.  He is also vax'd.  The doc gave him a booster vax when he went in for his camp physical last week, stating that people need to get a booster every 8-10 years to maintain immunity.  I argued that being exposed to his sister last year should be enough of a booster, but ultimately DH signed off on the vax.

  5. I have FLL 1&2 that I used for DS11.  Then I kind of forgot about FLL used CLE LTR and CLE LA100-110 for DD.  Now she is moving into 2nd grade and I'd like to get away from CLE (all of the didactic marks drive me crazy).  I am wondering if I can just jump into FLL3 (I have that too) since it seems like it reviews everything from FLL1&2 anyway.  Thoughts?

  6. I know it's tough! Cub Scouts and AHG meet at the same time and place for us. They also integrate some activities at times, which is an added benefit. I don't think we could do it otherwise...

This may have been the case before but now that AHG has dissolved it's Memorandum of Mutual Support with the BSA, I wouldn't count on it.

I thought scouts was mixed boys and girls these days - I'm sure I have heard that it is here. And is the Christianity aspect (as in too much) one of the things that puts people off scouts - that and the patriotism stuff.

    The only coed groups in the BSA are Venture Crews and Sea Scouts.  They are for older kids (14-21);

We have been involved in a BSA Troop, BSA Venture Crew, BSA Pack, and AHG Troop all at once and THAT was crazy.  Currently DS is in Boy Scouts and DD is in AHG.  Both units meet on Monday.  Both DH and I are leaders for both units.  We Scout from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. every Monday, but then we are done for the week (except for weekend outings as they occur).  It's very doable.

  7. We are headed to Redmond/Bend again in September.  I am looking for fun activities to do with our family.  We have been there before and have done the following:

-Columbia River Gorge (scenic highway including several waterfalls inc. Multnomah Falls, Vista House, Bonneville Locks and Dam, Bonneville Fish Hatchery)

    -Deschutes Brewery Tour

    -Goody's Chocolate Tour

    -The High Desert Museum

-Richardson's Rock Ranch (dig for thunder eggs)

-Newberry National Volcanic Monument (including Lava Butte, Lava River Caves, East Lake and Paulina Lake)

-John Day Fossil Beds National Monument (including Painted Hills, Sheep Rock, and Clarno units as well as digging for fossils in Fossil)

    -rock climbing at Smith Rock

    -Oregon Observatory at Sunriver

    -golfing at Eagle Crest

I'm thinking of driving down through Warm Springs to go to the Native American Museum there.  I'm also looking at a trip out through Sisters to Proxy Falls and the Belknap Hot Springs.  Another day trip would be to do the Canyon Creek Meadows Trail near Three Fingered Jack.

    Any other ideas?

  8. I prefer the snozzle noises to the incessant snoring, choking, gagging, coughing, and swallowing of his own tongue that used to keep me awake all night.

You make find that having another white noise in the room (such as a fan) helps.

  9. I finally read that right. I'd been thinking "Oil Can Henry's" (like Jiffy Lube, for those not familiar... and for those not familiar with Jiffy Lube, no it's not THAT). And I was very confused.

There was a burger joint in my college town called Juicy Lucy's.  Yeah.  Juicy Lucy's.  That's just not right.

  10. I was a Resident Assistant in college.  My residents liked to play jokes on me.  One morning I went to the shower and while I was in there the girls took all of my clothes/robe/towel.  No problem.  I wrapped myself in the shower curtain and walked back to my room...  only to find that my roommate had left for class and I was locked out.  I ended up having to go down to the men's floor to have the male RA come upstairs with his master key to let me in my room....  wearing nothing but a shower curtain and a smile.  Yup.  Memories.

  11. I've always handled the high zoo and aquarium prices by getting a membership and then going so much that it made up for the high initial price.

If I were on vacation, I would check out Citypass.  http://www.citypass.com/seattle

I second the City Pass.  It will save you nearly 50% on admission prices and gives you a good variety of things to do.  We have done these a few times with out of town guests.  The last time I did it was with my kids, my 83 yo mother, and my oldest sister in a very busy two days. The kids still talk about it and they were 4 and 8 at the time.

We parked by the Seattle Center and went to the EMP and Science Fiction Museum.  Then we took our first ride to the top of the Space Needle (you get two) before hopping on the Monorail and heading downtown.  From there we went to Pike's Place Market for lunch.  After that we went to the Aquarium and Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe.  Then we took our Argosy Harbor Cruise, grabbed some chowder at Ivar's, and headed back to the Monorail after a quick stop at the Klondike Museum.  We took the Monorail back to the Space Needle, took our second ride at night, and then drove back to my house.

The next day we drove back to Seattle, spent the morning at the Science Center and the afternoon at the Museum of Flight (my mom wanted to see the Museum of Flight more than the Zoo).

Honestly, I could spent an entire day at any of the attractions (except the Space Needle) but it you and your family are up for the challenge, you can still enjoy everything in an abbreviated 2-day frenzy.

  12. Just a few dissenting thoughts... Paula was under oath when she admitted saying the "N" word. She was under oath and did not lie. That says something about her character because there are a great many in this country who would have put their hand on the Bible, taken the oath, and lied to save their public face. Additionally, nothing I read said whether she said it yesterday or 50 years ago. She is a 66 year old white woman raised in the South during times of great social change. I think it would be difficult to find anyone her age with her upbringing who did not use that word at some point in their life.

  13. I use one like this: http://www.amazon.com/July-2013-Endless-monthly-Planner/dp/B00BM8Z612/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1371619149&sr=8-7&keywords=weekly+planner+8.5+x+11

I use the "month-at-a-glance" pages for appointments, field trips, activities, etc. We also count off the days on those pages.

I have 2 kids so I divide the "weekly" pages into 2 columns, one for each child. On Monday, I fill in the assignments for the week. Then the kids copy their assignments into their own personal planners. Once the week is written in to the planner, nothing is added. As each assignment is completed, it gets checked off. The kids can work ahead if they like, and if they finish early they can have an extra afternoon/day off.
