  1. I'm new here. I am starting to homeschool my 2nd grader in January. I also have a 17 year old high school senior who will finish public school in June and a 3 year old. My 7 year old does very well in math (his favorite topic) and is an average speller (typically 12/15 on his weekly public school spelling/dictation tests).

I am planning to follow WTM loosely, using TSOW with AG as well as using FLL and WWE. For Science I plan to use the books as outlined in TSOW as well. For Art, Music, Physical Education/Health, etc., I plan to use an ecclectic approach focusing on my son's interests as well as Scouting activities.

I am so overwhelmed trying to choose Math and Spelling programs for him. I am leaning toward Saxon math because it is scripted, my son is good at math, and those doing Saxon math do well on standardized tests. However, I flip-flip between Saxon, MUS, Singapore Math, and so on.

Spelling is another area in which I would like some suggestions. I don't want a program that will make him write lists and lists of words over and over again, even when he knows how to spell them. I want one that will teach him to understand how to spell things, not just memorize how to spell them. One of my friends uses All About Spelling and likes that. Spelling Power also is of interest. But there are so many programs out there that I just don't know what to do!

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Michelle
