  1. Things that did not work here include BFSU, MCT, and PDFs that I planned to read directly on the tablet/Kindle.

What does work are original WTM recommendations, curricula that I can condense/skip as needed, and PDFs that I print and bind in advance.

What I learnt that trends come and go, and what's in today is forgotten tomorrow. I learnt not to get swayed by threads where several posters gush over a curriculum. I realized that many of these people have not used the curriculum for long and are as likely to give it up and do something else soon. I found out that many US homeschoolers get money to buy curriculum and they have a thriving market for used curricula if it doesn't work for them. I learnt that simple, low-cost, get-it-done books that I can condense/skip as needed will work equally well for my dd.

Here are weeks 23-29. I tried to upload the whole file but it was to big for the wtm file requirement.

This is more detailed than what I had saved. Would you be able to upload it to (say) your Google drive or Dropbox and then PM me the link?

  4. And, from one stereotype to another. Asian teenagers come in all shapes and sizes too. Sure, the average is different from the American average, but they're not all the same.

Sure they do. But I'm not stereotyping. I live in Asia and, on the whole, teens are skinnier than Ms Kelly looked. As I said, she has a typical Asian mom figure.

  5. So no one has answered my second question. What is cc?

BB cream was originally called Blemish Balm. This product first came out in Asian cosmetics before being co-opted by Western companies. BB was a sort of all-in-one product - tinted moisturizer with sunscreen.

CC and DD cream are just marketing terms coined by Western cosmetics companies to try to differentiate their all-in-one products.

Here is an article that tries to explain the so-called differences in these products.

  6. I live in Singapore and have late evening conference calls several times a week with the NY office. You can tell I prefer the spring forward time.

Honestly though, I cannot understand why this is still a custom. Does it really reduce energy bills? Offices keep their lights and computers and airconditioning on all night anyway.

  7. Dd told me today that in her health class(9th grade) presentations there was a girl who had to stop and sound out practically every word. :( I am still thinking about it and I have tears in my eyes.

Right away I knew that I need to volunteer at our library to help people learn to read. I'm going to call tomorrow and find out how. It just makes me so sad. I wonder how widespread this problem is.

You have such a kind heart!

If it's appropriate, perhaps you can also reach out to this girl and ask her if she wants to join the lessons at the library.

  8. My dd's school used to use the Discovering Maths text until a couple of years ago. Now they use the New Syllabus Maths text.

I asked the Maths HoD why they switched. She explained that NSM had more challenging problems than DM. I bought both texts and having compared them, I would tend to agree.

I taught a little ahead of the school's schedule. I taught her the first chapter out of DM and then switched to NSM for the second-fourth chapters. I find NSM has better explanations for new concepts, so it is easier to teach from.

If your student needs slower, incremental problems, DM is better. If your student can handle faster paced and advanced problems, NSM is better.

If you want, I can scan the same topic from each text and send the PDFs to you.

Some other schools use the NSM workbook too. I only have the DM workbook, so I cannot tell how it compares to the NSM workbook.

  9. Just bought What is Happening to my Body? by Lynda Madaras for both my kids. There is a boy one and a girl one. Good stuff.

Imo, this one is for older teens because it goes beyond puberty. For a pre-teen, the other book suggestions upthread are more appropriate.

  10. Such strange people.

What is it like to go from holding hands (which every 1st grader does) one day to making tea the next?? That has to mess with your head.

Millions of Indians, whose marriages are arranged, go from no physical contact to being married. It doesn't mess with _their_ heads; it's the cultural norm.

  11. Slightly off topic, but I bought the "Everything" bundle in 2013, before she had released the grade 7/ pre-algebra texts. I don't see a bundle for adding just the new stuff. Is there one or do I have to buy them separately? Or should I contact her?

I have her pre-Common Core "Everything" bundle. I compared what I had with the new year 7 samples and I think the old 6A/B covers mostly everything. My student was able to go from the old 6A/B to intro Algebra.
