  1. My dd and I started with WWE1 but could not continue due to school work and other issues.

We are now doing WWS 1 and she is able to cope well.

We started WWS1 without having done WWE. I think we started it when oldest ds was in 7th grade, but it may have been 8th. He used books 1 and 2 independently at the prescribed pace, and had great results.

OT: what does/did he do after WWS2?

  2. I have never used Hake but we are using Grammar for the Well Trained Mind. It's somewhat cumulative, so what you could do is look at the "review" exercises and see if you think your child could handle them without explanation. Then skip the weeks prior.

There is a review after weeks 1-3, after weeks 4-6, weeks 7-9, etc.

To those who have seen it: did you compare it with the earlier Advanced Language Lessons? How different is it?

  3. It seems to be a known anniversary update issue

    From ZDNet

“In the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, version 1607, Microsoft removed Cortana's on-off switch. But it's still there, if you know where to look. Use this tweak to make Windows search strictly local.†http://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10-tip-turn-off-cortana-completely/

I am so sick of Windows 10's constant updates and the resultant changes to my computer settings, I am thisclose to switching to an iMac.

  4. I am reading a book from an author who is lamenting the education in our country because people use to read about Odysseus and now our children are reading vampire stories. The author is a little harsh overall, but I am wondering how to have my 13 year old be able to read and understand literature that is harder to read and understand. It’s a brain muscle that I’m not sure how to exercise. I have him read books mostly from Sonlight selections but I’m not sure how to get him further into novels/material that is harder to understand . Suggestions on how to get him to the next level?

  5. Below is some information on WWS I have found here on the forum and saved. This was written by someone else but I found it useful and decided to save a copy of it. Not sure if this is what you're looking for (probably not) but I thought it might help.   You may want to copy and paste it on a Word document to make it easier to read.  Hope this helps.  :001_smile:

Thank you for sharing this. I had read this post that Martha had kindly compiled from the giant WWS questions thread. I want the PDF that SWB linked in post# 131 of that thread.

  6. I am not familiar with RS Geometry.

If dd is doing well with MM, and it is working well, I would continue with it. If there are any Prealgebra topics that MM doesn't cover, I would get a cheap textbook (like a used Lial's or Dolciani's) to supplement MM.

If you choose to use an online option, both Derek Owens and TabletClass have got good reviews here. You can preview both on Youtube. I prefer DO's voice over the teacher from TC but TC is more affordable esp. on sale.

  7. Wow, I haven't read any of the authors mentioned on this thread, except Agatha Christie. Lots for me to check out. :)

OP, would you be interested in J K Rowling's crime thriller series featuring her detective, Cormoran Strike? She writes them under the pen name Robert Galbraith. There are three books in the series so far, and they are available as audio books. The first two books were dramatized by the BBC last month.

  8. Google Docs, Google group Calendar, and I just found Google Keep for collaborative notes and lists.

Alternatives to Google are Dropbox, Todoist, and Evernote.

Slack is a communications app that young people use to collaborate on projects. Some companies have deployed it at work. An alternative is Skype.

ETA: Many YouTubers I follow use FinalCutPro for making videos.

Here is a list of apps one YouTuber, Thomas Frank, uses.

Anyway, if anyone is interested, I can link some of the inspiring videos and tools I've encountered in my program so far.

Yes, I want to know more.
