  1. We've been getting a ton of calls lately. They start at about 8am. My "favorite" is AT&T, as the voice on the caller id announces, "Call from...AT!"

Over half the time, it's a recording, so I can't even tell them to remove our name from their list. Ugh, it's so annoying.

  2. Yes, but we have to go to Orange Julius because there is a cute guy that works there.  There we have to hit the record store and have a slice at Original Pizza.

Most of my fond memories of youth involved Metro North. I should write a book.  :coolgleamA: Either that or cruising around Antioch mall. May they both RIP.

How could I have forgotten Original Pizza?! And Orange Julius-- I remember when someone had to go and announce the calorie count in those, not that I cared. And the record store...oh, how I miss it. When I was about 12, my friend's dad was the manager at one of them, I can't remember which one, and he let me have the life size Shaun Cassidy when they were finished with it!!!! It stood in my room forever and scared my mom to death every time she opened my door.

Some of my earliest memories involve Antioch before it was covered. Do you remember when it was outdoors?

And Metro North--how many thousands of hours did I spend there? So many memories...My girl scout troop, which was conveniently also my dance class, performed Rhinestone Cowboy under the hot air balloons. That was just the first in a line of many.

    Maybe we could co-author.

  3. No. I grew up in the 80s, designer everything was key and everyone knew the fake from the real. Izod, Polo, Gloria Vanderbilt, Nikes, yup brand names were high on the list. If you didn't have at least one polo or Izod shirt, you were out. I was out.

My son wears clothes from walmart, Target, and Kohls, doesn't care about brand or fashion in the least.

Even girls, I see wanting certain styles, but not necessarily expensive name brands. It's easier to replicate styles on a budget now.

Ha! Paula, your list takes me right back to high school! But you forgot the Jordache and Calvin Klein.  :coolgleamA: Oh, my gosh, I can still see the pocket design of all the different jeans brands. And Izod shirts were worn with the collar up, lol.

My teens couldn't care less about their clothes. My dd doesn't wear make-up. They are not representative of the teens in our extended family, though. Yes, appearance definitely matters to them! But not any more than when we were teens.

Okay, Paula, let's hit Metro North for some jean shopping. We'll be sure to ask the salesperson how to keep them nice and dark. How about some new Nikes at Foot Locker? Then we can swing through Spencer's just for fun. We'll top it off by getting giant cinnamon rolls and watching Sixteen Candles on Netfilx.  B)

  4. Considering it's 2 am and I was just browsing IKEA's website adding to my list for the new store opening about an hour away, and I plan on making it a field trip with Ds and my mom, probably a bit touristy for us.

I check on the progress every time I'm in town. It's really coming along!

Well there isn't one in my state, although there is one being built in my hometown a couple of hours away. Yet I've managed to drag my family through 2 separate stores 1000 miles apart.

Disclaimer: It doesn't take much for me to consider shopping a tourist activity.  B)

  5. I was almost hit by a speeding truck cutting through the grocery store lot last week. I was walking back to my car after returning my cart. It was so close it felt like my heart stopped.

A toddler in our area was killed a couple of weeks ago by a vehicle in the ball park lot. They all knew each other, and it was a tragic accident.

  6. Currently... Essie Fishnet Stockings (red).

This is my go-to color for toes. They're nearly always this shade.

On my fingernails, if they're painted, it's almost always Essie Starter Wife.  Their color names crack me up. What a fun job that must be!

  7. We just traded in our 2006 Odyssey for another Odyssey last November. The old one had 120,000 miles on it and had no issues the entire time we owned it. We maintained it well and loved it. We looked at the Sienna, just to say we looked at something different, lol, but it didn't come close to the comfort of the Odyssey. Ours isn't part of the recall--that looks like a fairly small number.

    Good luck with your decision!

  8. One of our Cavaliers was diagnosed with diabetes in October. I also grew up with a diabetic Setter/Retriever mix.

It was a little hard getting him regulated at first since we caught it early, right as he was becoming diabetic. At first, he was at the vet every week or so while they did a full blood sugar "curve" to see how he was reacting to food and insulin. Once we knew how much he needed, it just became a matter of learning to give it to him, which thankfully my son has done so well. He has favorite needles that go in easier and are thin that make it easier.

Our dog gets 7 units of insulin twice a day with 1 cup of Science Diet w/d food. He can also have green beans to curb hunger, and he's always hungry.

Our vet sent a recurring prescription to the pharmacy for his insulin (human insulin), and we buy the needles by the box.

I read about a research trial in Spain where they are injecting a gene into the hind leg of diabetic dogs and they are instantly cured. I would LOVE to be able to do that for our dog, but I think it's many years off.

  9. We have a lot of dogs in our neighborhood. it's not at all uncommon for someone to be out walking (with or without a dog) at 11pm here. It's also not uncommon for my dogs to be out in our yard. They definitely bark if they notice, and I or one of the kids bring them in. At that time of night, they're only out briefly anyway, but I feel that people have every right to be walking their dog, and my dogs are my responsibility.

The houses in our neighborhood are not closely spaced, and the yards are large, so I don't necessarily worry that my dogs' barking will wake our nearest neighbors, but I still don't let them bark.

  10. We're having thunder sleet/snow right now. Loud thunder and dogs covered in wet "snow" that melts into a puddle the minute they come in the door.   :glare:

We're used to crazy weather here, though, that's for sure. I'd love to find 80 degrees on a beach 365 days a year... :coolgleamA:

  11. I don't know the details of your friend's medical history but if her only reason was concern due to breast feeding that isn't going to be considered a legitimate exemption even if a doctor did sign off or write a letter. For most of these policies you would have to have a recognized medical reason or accepted religious exemption. For example, I know there was a case at one hospital where a group claimed a religious exemption to the flu shot but could not provide any texts, policies, statements, etc. from any religious group/organization to support that belief. They went to court and the judge ruled that they could be required to get the vaccine as part of employment. You can claim a religious exemption if you can show that you have been a Christian Scientist and follow those beliefs; you can't if it's just a personal belief. It's a higher standard than exemptions for school vaccine requirements.

Right. Her exemption is legitimate to her, but she has absolutely no say in the matter.

My DH is in and out of the same hospital but not technically an employee. He gets the flu shot every year, although he is far from convinced it's effective. It's just not a big deal for him to get one. Our DD is immune-compromised, as well.

Anecdotally, I've only known a few people who've actually gotten the real flu. Interestingly, they'd all been vaccinated.

  12. Thank you, everyone, for the discussion.

I don't know how she feels about the mist. I have a feeling she wouldn't want it, though.

I have a lot of thoughts swirling around in my head about this issue. Some concern the flu and the questionable efficacy of the vaccine, but most relate to the bigger issues. From what I understand, her legitimate exemption was denied. The whole thing seems really heavy-handed to me.

  13. Hi, all. This situation just came up for someone that I know, and I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about the legality of such a thing.

Basically, this person works for a large healthcare facility that is requiring ALL employees, vendors, everyone, to get a flu vaccine. My friend declined. She's nursing a baby and just doesn't feel comfortable getting one. Her doctor agreed and wrote a letter stating as much.

She was notified that her "voluntary resignation" is in 2 weeks. Her job has been posted as open.

I'm wondering about her rights here. Can a corporation really "force" an employee to get a vaccine and fire them if they don't?

  14. Thanks for the input, all. There are some things here that I've never heard of that I plan to look into.

She and DS 6, the son with low Ig-A, have both been sick all weekend, and today DD is limping, although she says it's a cramp in her foot, so who knows. She downplays everything. She's just like me in that way.  I'm really hoping we don't spend most of the winter like this. The cold weather is hard on her. We're still getting used to the meds. She is really resisting the one that makes her dizzy, although I think that is likely temporary if she sticks with it.

:grouphug: to all. Autoimmune issues are so hard.

  15. I hope you get some answers soon. My 13yr old son is limping. His IgA just came back at 37. The range on the report is 70-432. He has been treated for Lyme disease for 1.5yrs. I am not sure if he has Lyme-induced arthritis at this point or if he's still infected w/ the bacteria. We just have no idea.

I'm so sorry your son isn't feeling well. It's terrible to not know what's going on.

Here's an update since I first posted about my DD:

Her symptoms have continued--rashes, limping, color changes in fingers and toes, tiredness, catching every cold that comes along.

Her Ig-A is 0, so she's Ig-A deficient, she has Reynaud's, and a few weeks ago, her ped. rheum. started her on 2 daily meds. One is to help stave off vascular damage, and the other is to hopefully delay or prevent the onset of rheumatic diseases like Lupus. We've had a few minor bumps getting everything going. One med had to be changed, and she complains of dizziness with another. I'm hoping that will go away with time. The side effects are so minor compared to the benefits that she could gain from them.

In addition to that, my youngest had his Ig-A tested last year because of frequent illness, and it came back at 27. So he's not officially Ig-A deficient but classified as "low Ig-A." I'm really not sure what this means, other than he seems to get sick more than everyone else, well, except DD.

She was never tested for Lyme, so I don't know anything about that. I hope your son feels better soon. :grouphug:

  16. :grouphug: It will get better, but then it will get stressful again. But then it will get better.

My oldest was born during DH's 2nd year of residency, and my 2nd was born during his second year of GI fellowship. He's been a practicing gastroenterologist for around 13 years now.

My DH loves his specialty, but it does take awhile. If that's what truly interests your DH, it will be worth it. Let me know if he has questions about it, and I'll pass them on to my DH.

    Hang in there!

  17.

Oh, my gosh, I love that.

When the movie came out a few years ago, it was the summer that I had torn my ACL. I went to the theatre on crutches, and my DH brought one of those little fabric fold-up "table" things so I could put my leg on it. My physical therapists helped me "make a plan" and everything :)

The movie was okay, but I would've rather had an alien theme or something "unexplainable."

  18. The X-Files, in so many ways, will always be one of my 'special' shows. Mulder and Scully pop into my mind quite often, actually.  :confused1:

"What's the matter? You're little feet won't reach the pedals?" is a frequent joke around here, too.

When someone looks up at the sky and says, "Look?" or, "What's that?" Someone else will inevitably say, "There's something up there, Mulder."

Once at Disney, when DD15 was about 8, we were at the Floridian for dinner, and Prince Charming kept calling DD "Princess." After he left, she said, "I wish he'd call me "Agent Scully."

A few of the episodes were downright scary or disturbing! I still catch myself being cautious walking by the vents in the house or the sewer grates in the neighborhood. :coolgleamA:
