We still don't have direct access to the liver specialist (we won't have medicaid until June 2013). The liver doctor encouraged us to use the county hospital card (the card you all helped us get by helping us move). The Doctor trains the interns at the county hospital.

Please do whatever he has suggested that you do. If there are liver interns being trained there, then his case is also being seen by the Dr.s who teach, train, and are often at the cutting edge of research.

I met a liver transplant surgeon a few weeks ago who was saying that the advances in transplants in the past 15 years are absolutely astounding. It's not near the surgery it once was---shorter, less taxing on the patient, etc., etc.

I'll pray that he gets on the transplant list and that until then his Dr.s figure out the best way to keep him as stable as possible.

  2. I think it really depends on the child. Some kids love it, and some kids just don't seem drawn to it.

Having said that, Playmobil has been the most loved, enduring toy in our home.

Our large play room is actually built around the Playmobil, lol. We have way too much to list, and they've loved it all.

My teens do a lot of their stop-motion films with it now, and their younger siblings are walking around with the Playmobil catalog quite a bit. They want their own. :)

  3. I bought a new purse, which i generally do once a year. My treat to myselsf!

Anyway, this one was a tad more than i usually spend (but still, 50% off!) so i feel a little guilty. Also, i am giving a few older bags to my church thrift shop-they are in great shape, but theyre just not right for me (I am finally accepting that if i havent used it in ayear, i am sure someone else would be happy to have it!).....so even though i technically didnt "need" a new purse, in buying one i was able to let go of some that i dont use, so.....even steven right??

i really love this purse, and it is my only real gift to myself that isnt a "neccesity" in a while.......so it's okay, right?:tongue_smilie:

I'll love your purse, and you can love mine. ;) I just added an adorable tote to my Disney Dooney collection. We got here the day after my birthday, so I bought myself a present. :)

  4. If you haven't already read It Starts With Food, maybe see if your library has it. I'm reading it right now, and it's incredibly inspiring. They talk about what to focus on if you can't do all organic/fresh, etc. Basically, just do your best to get rid of the processed stuff. That's priority number 1. Then, the organic focus is on meats and eggs before produce.

There is so much fantastic information in the book. I find myself re-reading certain sections several times, which I actually love :)

  5. So, I've been browsing Dick Blick and... wow. I think I'm in love :)

I'm stumped on which markers to get her. It looks like you get what you pay for and I'd pay dearly for some really good markers. Not sure we can afford excellent quality markers AND other supplies, which is disappointing. So, I think I need to shift my sights down from "artist quality" to "very good quality for a 9 yo, but not $8 per pen."

If it helps at all, my olders have been seriously into art since they were really young, and I just bought them both a set of the Coptic markers this year. So don't feel bad about waiting awhile (10 years here ;)) on those.

In the meantime, the Prismacolor markers are also great. They are a HUGE step up from "kiddie" markers. I buy ours at Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon, and I also get a lot of stuff through Dick Blick when I get an email sale announcement.

Paper makes a gigantic difference in everything, as well, so be sure to stock up!

(Sorry for any weird icons at the top---I'm on my iPad...)

  6. I'm trying to make heads or tails of it. I think I mostly have it except for this:

How can the popular vote be different than the electoral vote if the popular vote in each state IS the electoral vote?

Is it because of the different numbers of electoral votes in each state? Like a candidate may win a majority in the number of popular votes over the whole nation, but not win the electoral vote in enough states (the states that he/she wins electoral votes in are smaller)?

Please explain it like I'm stupid-for some reason, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it, despite reading a children's level book about it to try to figure it out!

So can it ever happen the other way, that they win enough electoral votes but not the popular vote? I would think that couldn't happen.

I remember having to "prove" exactly how this could happen in 7th grade social studies. (a long time ago ;)) We had to show every state that our candidate won/lost and how that added up to an electoral victory but a popular loss.

I told ds and he is now pondering ways to go to work for Lucasfilm/Disney as an intern in college, or attend college near the headquarters. So we'll be paying attention to this. He's also the kid that started writing storyboards for Star Wars 7,8,and 9 when he was 8 years old. He was miffed Lucas hadn't already done so.

I said to DS, "Well, there you go." ;) Disney, Star Wars, and filmmaking comprise 98% of my kids' childhoods. Honestly, Outliers was going through my mind when I read the news. My oldest just turned 17 and has easily spent 10,000 hours on his filmmaking and just continues to grow in it.

Timing and time spent on what he loves... Who knows?

  8. My kids started out with iMovie, moved on to Final Cut, and are now using Adobe AfterEffects.

They spend A LOT of time on it. :)

When they were younger, they studied the tutorials included with the software. There was quite a bit of information there. As they got older, they moved on to bigger, more complicated sources of information.

  9. That show is one of my all-time favorite series. I watched it in re-runs after school.

Now my kids have the entire series on DVD. :D

I love the minimalist look of their house and Beaver's classroom. ;) Everything is so tidy.

I read an article recently about Tony Dow. He's a sculptor who had some of his work shown at the Louvre. He looks the same!

And apparently the actor who played Eddie Haskel was a total sweetheart in real-life.:)

  10. I know high schoolers who have all their texts online. There's one hardcover text that's kept in the classroom. It can be tough. What if your family only has one computer at home and 3 kids trying to do homework? Everyone needs to access their online texts. No one has an actual book to use.

My own kids get really tired reading from a screen, and there are certain subjects that they really dislike reading electronically, particularly science and math. They need to flip back and re-read or study a visual again, etc. We all hate doing that in an e-book. Electronic "extras" from the publisher are fine, but we like the actual text.

I also really dislike the idea that when I buy a book on my Kindle, I can't give it away when I'm done. :glare: I pay almost as much as I do for the paper version, and yet I can't sell it at a garage sale, donate it to the library, loan it to my DD's OT, or give it to a friend.

  11. My MA is in Marriage and Family Therapy, but one of my SILs has a degree in Child Life Specialist. It's basically 1/3 education, 1/3 nursing, and 1/3 child development. She now runs a Mother's Day Out program from her home so that she can be with her own 5 children, but she LOVED her job as a child life specialist! She worked full-time in a hospital interacting with the kids--talking with them while doing crafts and playing, etc. before surgery or during other times. There's a lot of variety.

  12. Will my younger dd who has no body fat want a wet suit for swimming?

(And thanks for all the suggestions so far! Lots of recommendations look great.)

Well, Clearwater Beach is about 2 hours away from Orlando, but the water is warmer since it's on the Gulf side and, obviously, clearer! It's actually a beautiful area. There's a hotel right on the public beach that's a great place to stay... soft sand, just lovely. The last time we were there, it was a Sheraton.

  13. My birthday is on the same day, and I'm in almost the exact same predicament. :) I really just don't want anything. So far, I've thought of a charm for my bracelet and a scarf. I could also use some new gloves and warm socks.

Exciting, huh? Everyone around here keeps asking me if I've ordered my birthday presents yet...:001_huh: We also leave for Disney the next day.
