  1. If your student uses or has used WWS1, how much time do they spend on it on an average day? Thanks!
  2. AOPS is definitely on my consideration list, but I had not considered the idea of their pre-algebra. That might work for him. Thank you for the idea. We are slowly switching to year-round math. I am the kind of person that really needs time off from school, but I am realizing this kid might not be. I believe he prefers to have less work everyday but do more days of work.
  3. I have a 6th grader who is a bit advanced in math. Last year he has placed in the 99th percentile on the NWEA MAP 6-12 test. He is the kind of kid who just gets math. In fact, one day he came to me with a fully fledged proof on why 0.9 repeating is equal to 1. He has been 2 years ahead in his math curriculum, and this year he began algebra. I was concerned about him doing so because he has very poor executive function. He has Elhers-Danlos and many issues associated with that. As I feared, he gets the concepts with absolutely no issue, but just can't carry a problem through. For example, he drops negative signs, will write down the wrong exponents, etc. etc. He is getting about 1/3rd of the problems he attempts wrong because of these issues. If I sit with him and say things like, "Are you sure that is correct?" he can usually find the error. But it causes math to take hours to complete each day. So I think we should set aside algebra for another year. He is just too frustrated to continue, and I just think this is a maturity issue. I knew this was a possibility, and I know there is really no need to rush. I am just trying to meet him where he is at. But I am not sure what we should do for math in the meantime. I don't think he needs to go back to pre-algebra. He seems to have all of that information down well. Does anyone have any suggestions for a boy like this? I have tried to get some advise and counseling locally for this kid, but I can't even get anyone to call me back. Thank you so much. I look forward to hearing your wisdom.
  4. I have come to realize that my kids’ favorite type of curriculum is video based. By that I mean when we watch a video together of someone passionate about a topic then we take that information and continue on our own. Think IEW’s SSS program or the newer Artistic Pursuits books. Do you know any other curriculums that work this way and you love? Thanks!
  5. My kids adore pieces board game cafe. It's a drive to Soulard from Forest Park , but we have happily stayed there for several hours before.
  6. I just wanted to add that they just updated Beowulf so that it can be printed double-sided so that does cut down on printing costs a bit. It’s my 8-year-old’s favorite subject. Nothing is better to her than a dog teaching you grammar 😅
  7. We have used homeschoolboss.com for the NWEA MAP and have found it extremely simple and has given me a wealth of information that I have been able to implement.
  8. I recently read the well trained mind book. In the math section, she mentions including real world math once a week. I purchased one of the books mentioned (family math), but its not what I was looking for. They are 8 and 10. The younger is in Saxon 3 and the older is in Saxon 7/6. Does anyone have real world math recommendations to use along side Saxon? thank you in advance!
