  1. We just had a very successful handwriting day with my 5yo ds (with gross and fine motor issues) using HWOT. We love it here.

I use just about everything that they sell. My kids LOVE the CD. They beg to play it, and they want the song to repeat over and over (and over and over:001_huh:). My ds does sing little bits of the songs to himself as he writes.

If I had to limit myself to only a few items, I'd say that we use the slates and lined chalkboard a lot, the playdough not so much. The wooden pieces were a fun novelty for ds, but since the program only uses them for capital letters, they have a very limited shelf life. I find the teacher's guide to be helpful in pulling together different activities for each handwriting lesson. However, if your kid can pretty much figure out how to form letters and discern handwriting conventions easily, you probably won't need the tg, especially if you just intend to have him get more handwriting practice. The beauty of HWOT, though, is not the worksheets or the style of the letters. It's all about the songs, large motor movements, the teaching tips and multi-sensory activities.

As I said, my ds (who is not quite 5.5) has motor issues, and I have seen quite an improvement over the past four months. I really recommend the program.

  2. Get your hands on some Jim Weiss recordings. If your library doesn't have any, start buying them!! His story tapes and cds were a childhood staple at our house for years and years. He is often a guest at homeschool conferences and is the introductory voice on an Mp3 I just downloaded from Peacehill Press over the weekend.

This is his website that lists all his many titles: Jim Weiss

I also suggest some of the Classics for Kids recordings as well as Peter and the Wolf, and the Carnival of the Animals. Try some other titles, too, by Beverly Cleary and Lynn Reid Banks or by Dick King Smith.

Oh my goodness, thank you so much for this recommendation!! This is exactly what I have been looking for and unable to find on my own. You have totally made my day! :D

  3. Well, I really think you ladies are going to thank me for telling you about Evernote, because I think it is the Best Thing EVER for homeschooling moms who need to keep track of curriculum ideas.

First of all, the program is FREE. You can use it on the web, on your computer, or on your iPhone or Blackberry. You can clip websites to your notes, you can write yourself little notes, you can take pictures of your notes and the program CAN READ YOUR PICTURES and search through them for you. You can organize your notes into notebooks or tag them or just have the program search for keywords within your notes.

And did I mention, it is free?

This is so much better than a bookmark or a flat file (doc or spreadsheet). I also use it for recipes, craft ideas, storing business cards, remembering the brand or model number of products that I need. Omg, I just love this program so much. My world has become so much easier to keep track of since I've started using it.
