Lots of people who aren't as considerate as the ladies here. 😉

I started this as a child to hide what I didn't eat.  But, I don't take mystery food from potlucks so I end up not taking much food in the first place...  too much of a germaphobe.

Once at my husband's aunt's house for a Thanksgiving buffet, I took what I thought was a modest helping of dressing.  It was oyster slimed bread cubes🤢  So disgusting. There was no way to get it to the trash without people noticing.   We were sitting around the living room not a dinner table.  So, when the opportunity presented, I quickly pushed it onto my then boyfriend's plate.  He would be forgiven for leaving it on the plate, but not me. No one saw me do it.

  2. Was shopping at walmart with my SIL and my firstborn baby, who was just big enough to be sitting up in the cart (had a cart cover and she was strapped in).  My SIL was standing next to the baby on the side of the cart.  I walked down the aisle to get something and SIL was turned to face me.  A huge thug guy walked up behind my SIL and clapped his hands once, hard and super loud straight above my baby's head.  We were shocked and didn't say anything.  He laughed and walked away.  What was he doing?  Trying to make the baby cry?  She didn't.   Trying to remind us never to turn our backs on a child because some crazy person could break their neck as quickly as that guy walked up and clapped their hands?  Well, that's the lesson it taught me.  I never let my kids wander in stores.   Who knows when an acid attack or something else will happen.  Anyway, I still am shocked and puzzled by that walmart incident,  11 years later.

  3. I know she would like the theme books but thought we should get through SWI first.  Did you do SWI?  We did start doing Fix It rather late in the process.  She quickly worked through book 1 and is now in book 2.  I am surprised I like it enough despite the lack of diagramming. It was too hard to use another grammar curriculum.  I don't even remember what the last one was that I was trying to use,  maybe MCT, or maybe I had moved on from that and was trying to make my own with some diagramming workbooks.  She likes Fix It and likes to work ahead with it, which is a win.

What is Teaching the Classics?  Is that just a teacher training course or is there a curriculum for teaching?

  4. My 11 yr old dd is about finished with SWI A year 1.  I plan to go right into yr 2 when she finishes this and make it a year round subject for her.  She likes the videos and has been doing well with it.

I have not been doing well.  I watched about the first 3 teacher seminar sessions and gave up.  I like them, but didn't have time.

I also have had SUCH a terrible time organizing her binder.  I know the teacher guide says where to put some things at the end of a lesson, but it doesn't say where to put everything.  I'm hoping with a new binder I can get this figured out.  It is always frustrating to me.  And I wonder, if I would have watched all 13 hrs of the teaching seminar, would I have this problem organizing her notebook?

So, did you use the teacher's course?  Should I really carve out time for it? Would it make everything better?

    Welcome!

I'm sorry that our thread seems exclusive.  It isn't meant to be, but I understand how it probably looks like that.  I mean, the fact that I called it "our" thread kind of proves that...

However, everyone is welcome here.  (And I hope that other people lurking here see that.) 🙂 I actually enjoy the thread more when there are more people posting.

It's not meant to be an exclusive thread, just a thread for encouraging each other and developing friendships.

So, please post again and feel free to post every day, several times a day.  🙂

Yes, you just all seem to be such pals:)

  6. Have you looked at Horizon or Abeka?

I chose Abeka over Horizon because the worksheets aren't as busy/cluttered, but I would have liked that Horizon has no faith based content so could be funded by our public homeschool.  However, Abeka faith content is minimal.  Story problems sometimes say something like "8 kids attending the Sunday school class each brought a snack to share..."  or there is a scripture about diligence on the top of the worksheet.  I do not follow the Abeka curriculum closely as it is written for a classroom, but it might be perfect for the amount of repetition that you need through different activities.  I do not know how Horizon curriculum is scripted, as I only looked through the workbooks.  Saxon has A LOT of repetition and the worksheets are stark, just problems, so not very fun for my elementary kids, but am considering it for grade 7 next year.

I've also supplemented with RS activities, BA, and we read Life of Fred.  I don't think LOF is enough for math, but it may make it fun for him.  They laugh when I read LOF.  Oh, and we bought some fun games and great dice from Box cars and one eyed Jacks.

Teaching Textbooks is a year behind grade level, from what I understand.

I would maybe try Abeka or Horizon and slow it down, make a lesson take 2 days if you must, and do it the full year.

  7. Anyone looked at both Hey Andrew and Greek Code Cracker?  I wanted to introduce Greek and teach the alphabet.  I figure it will at least be beneficial for higher math and science.  I only know the alphabet, myself.

  8. I'm going with GE next time.  Expensive  KA here.  Beautiful fridge inside and out and great layout.  I'm on my 2nd one through warranty.  Freezer frosted up and blocked ducts to fridge so fridge got no cold air, warmed up and spoiled our food (and happened again after repair) and ice maker is currently not working.  Actually nothing but trouble with our four KA appliances.  Lowes refunded me the range as it had so many service calls.  Was the expensive induction slide in range.  GE range is on the way.  KA has great design, but poor function.  We also got a 3rd chest freezer about 18 months ago.  At 13 months (right after warranty expired) it failed.  Replaced 3 different parts and it still doesn't get as cold.  It is whirlpool, same manufacturer as KA.  My husband is refusing to buy either ever again.  He is so annoyed.  Huge hassle to keep having repair guys here.

The appliance guys told me that units (across all manufacturers) are basically lasting for 5 years so it's better to keep old appliances than to upgrade.  I hope GE is better.  I'm trying to buy American but was so disappointed with KA.  I will not buy Samsung or LG as they have service issues where I live.  A friend's samsung fridge flooded their house while they were on vacation.

  9. I think most chocolate chip cookie recipes have too little flour.  So, to me the best is to brown your butter, then cool it. Then mix up cookies.  1 cup butter, 2 eggs, 3 c. Flour.  And all the other stuff.  Most recipes with this amount of butter and egg calls for 2.25 c flour and I think it's not enough.  Occasionally, I grind oats in food processor and use as oat flour for some of the flour but not so great that I do it very often.

So I use This recipe but with 1.5 c brown sugar and .5 c white, no water and with browned butter that's cooled, oh and a full TBS vanilla.  Sorry, I have real issues with following a recipe.  I always change it.  I think I have issues with anyone else telling me what to do or else I have issues with thinking I do it better... or maybe both!

I do think that chocolate chip cookies are marginal when they do not include pecans.  But since my husband prefers then without, and since I will eat fewer without, then I usually do not include them:(

  10. Ok, thought of a hack when I was getting my electric griddle to fry potato pancakes for brunch.

I store a few short things on top of my kitchen cabinets, where they cannot be seen.  Like my electric griddle.  I put plastic wrap over it so it is not dusty when I need to use it. Just peel off the wrap and it is ready.  Use, wash, wrap in plastic and put away again.

  11. We have ring.  I'm happy with it.  Batteries last a while even at very low temps. I think you can upgrade to a monitored security with ring for a monthly fee, but we have not. I guess the only issue is if someone tries to rob you when the wifi is down... ha.
