  3. We shifted gears a bit this month. Dd9 now attends our neighborhood ALE two days/week. Loves it. Can't wait to go with dd8 to see friends, have different teachers, go class-to-class, lunchroom, recess and all that jazz.

    I love the break. :)

She enjoys typing paragraphs, essays and stories so we are taking a light approach to writing now. She did MCT GT in the fall w/ her online english class.

I updated my siggy below if you are interested in the other stuff we're doing this semester. Still having a blast with our various math resources/classes.

    :lurk5:

  4. 3rd grade is when students are writing narrative, expository and technical papers. WWE has not approached these subjects yet.

Dds are taking writing at our local ALE this year. Students there are expected to write a strong multi-para personal narrative in grades 3 & 4 -- among other writing topics.

We used IEW, WWW along w/ WWE over the years so both dds are doing fine. WWW teaches the personal narrative in books 3 & 4. Dd9's class is studying and writing poetry this semester. She does a bit of writing for an online class as well. It's wise to come at writing from different angles.

    HTH! :)

  5. Can someone give me an idea of their math sequence if their child completed a solid Pre-A course in 5th grade? Thank you.

I agree with others not to plan too far ahead. Life happens. This year isn't quite turning out like I originally planned. But I'm rolling with it. Dds thoroughly enjoy our neighborhood ALE where they are now attending on Mon & Wed all day. The math is great review of the basics with a heavy focus on problem solving -- and the girls LOVE it. That gives me 2 full days to work on projects of my own. :)

Dd9 didn't do a formal prealg. We used various resources that got the job done.

    grade 4 --

    TT Alg 2

    3x/wk algebra tutoring via Cybershala

1x/wk algebra tutoring via Crewton Ramone

grade 5 -- finish TT Alg 2, more algebra online classes, local tutors?

grade 6 -- public school algebra?

    grade 7-- public school geometry?

I have CD & Aops if needed for supplementation. We're in no hurry.

    HTH! :)

  6. what did you use? I remember exstensive drug ed classes in high school and I think I have covered the topic just verbally going over things in dialogue with the dc, but so much is different now. They are sure to encounter this no matter what college they attend, I would rather they had correct information.

Any words on what was helpful?

    Thanks,

    K

Excellent questions! I wish I had researched this sooner.

Our state just passed a law to legalize marijuana. Yes, we have discussed this at length with ds over the past few months. The teen/young adult culture that I am in contact with has mixed thoughts/feelings on this topic. Many students don't consider pot a 'drug' -- which is troubling to me. It is everywhere around here. In schools, colleges, etc.

I brought in a gentleman from a local ministry to speak at our youth & college/career group on a Wed night last month. Unite 4 Life educates students & parents regarding drugs, depression, suicide. Not exactly feel-good topics for youth group -- but necessary. We had 5 teen suicides in our county last year. So sad. Drugs played a role in some of those deaths.

  7. Fun thread, Derek. :)

Dd9 is doing algebra with a variety of resources...

    TT Alg 1 & 2

    Rachna/Cybershala private online lessons (3x/week)

Ben Rogers/Crewton Ramone private online lessons (1x/week)

She is extremely sick this week but still wants to do her alg class w/ Ben today. Dd8 does beginning algebra with Ben also each week. He's fabulous.

We do basic math and algebra as separate subjects these days.

  8. Please share the ways in which you challenge your middle school learners.

What types of assignments make them stretch and grow?

Feel free to include types pf assignments that you have discovered through trial and error do NOT challenge them.

    Thanks,

Dd9 is doing 'middle school work' (whatever that means). She enjoys online classes (algebra, geography, mythology, MCT) for the discussion. She attends our local ALE for tech-tools & science (for fun). Again, she loves the interaction w/ teachers & peers. Her Mandarin class is highly challenging w/ a tutor who takes her language quite seriously. Piano lessons provide a creative outlet. Dd's piano teacher lets her pic her own music. This month she is mastering 'Who Am I?' from Les Mis.

Her favorite enrichment is probably Chinese Calligraphy lessons. Both dds are in heaven.

  9. Practice Makes Perfect is what we use as a supplement (well, I don't teach Spanish, but my friend who teaches Spanish in our little high school co-op uses it!), and I think it has been very helpful to my boys. My oldest son is using Breaking the Barrier 3 this year, and he is quite fluent now.

Dd15 uses the PMP books to supplement her Spanish studies. You can't go wrong.

  10.

So. For those of you who use WWE but need your child to start building paragraphs, how did you go about it? Did you grab a workbook and do it on the side? (Any good recommendations?) Did you start running IEW along the side with WWE? Did you give up and kick WWE to the curb in frustration? Or something else?

I use WWW3 w/ dd8 for this purpose. In our state, grade 3 students need to write 3 paragraphs w/ structure (topic sentence, details, ending sentence, transitions, etc). WWE doesn't teach para structure.

  11. Third grade gets better. If it were up to me, our schools would ditch enVision in favor of Primary Mathematics in a heartbeat. While it is not the ideal program for math adept kids, some of the problems labeled "algebra" or "reasoning" do take some thought.

    :iagree:

You, Beth, and I have different levels of enthusiasm over enVision (I fall in the middle). I aslo know you and I are supplementing with materials that are a year (or more) ahead of grade level at home, and we both use the most challenging work we can find. It would be very hard for a public school math program to seem "challenging" to a child who is math adept and working ahead with this sort challenging work at home.

The one thing we all agree on is the enVision is not "fuzzy math."

    :iagree:

Dd is currently doing cwp/ip 4, prealg concpts with Crewton R, TT6. Her enVision experience is problem-solving sets only and 2 hours/week of class. It's just fun and 'enrichment' for a kid who lives for math. She loves going to 'school' with friends, a teacher, playground, lunchroom, etc.

A mom came up to me yesterday after class at the ALE and said, "Your daughter has been helping my daughter with math at their table." I loved hearing that. Aly feels so confident in her math skills and loves helping to explain concepts to her little friends. :001_smile:

  12. I don't know if I qualify for this. I use it as a supplement to WWE. I like it, but it seems way too skimpy to me to be a full writing program. I do like the ease and independence it has, but could not use it as the sole source of writing instruction. .

    :iagree:

We have great success with WWW3 along with WWE3. Dd8 loves her blue writing workbook. :)

  13. I disagree with the premise. I do not see enVision as "fuzzy math," if anything it is a math program that trys to find a middle ground between traditional math programs and ones like Singapore math.

I do agree that not enough attention is paid to mastery of concept in enVision. There is too much skipping around for my taste. But "fuzz" math? Don't think so.
