  1. I recently did the hot onion treatment for my ds‘s cough that he‘d had for awhile. Sliced onions thinly, put in paper towel and set on his chest, covered with another paper towel, and placed a hot water bottle on top. He lay there for maybe 10-15 minutes each time. I did this twice one day (once in the morning and once in the late afternoon), and then one more time the next day. and I was amazed at how quickly his cough disappeared. Worth a shot?

I had some of these! I thought I was hot stuff. 🙂 This is the first I've ever heard of them being drug paraphernalia!

Was just the metal part the "roach clip," or the whole thing including feathers, beads, etc.? I'm trying to imagine someone smoking a joint with all those dangly things hanging from the clip. 🙂

I know! They were the bomb! I think (maybe?) most people won’t know the drug association, but I will forever picture them being used for that! I did find some on ebay that I am contemplating getting, though I still think there has to be somewhere I can get like 100 for $20 or something…

I remember those. You got them at the county fair in the '80's. They were super cool, and they were called roach clips. THEY WERE DESIGNED TO HOLD YOUR JO!NT SO YOUR FINGERS WOULDN'T GET BURNED. And everyone was totally fine with their kids running around wearing drug paraphernalia. 🙃

Those were the days! I was just thinking about the candy cigarettes we used to have. Even my parents, who were pretty strait-laced, didn’t say boo about them.

    Did you check etsy?

I did. Again, small numbers for bigger prices.

Maybe you could DIY with craft supplies at Hobby Lobby?

I could, and I did think about it, but I could potentially have to make 50 of them and I am not THAT crafty!

Thanks for the ideas. I keep searching, and let me tell you the search for “roach clips” had some interesting links. Apparently they are also used for holding a joint when smoking! You learn something every day!

  5. Aha! They are called roach clips! I had been searching amazon, ebay, and super fun sites like “Carnivaldepot”” and the like and NOT finding any. Now maybe if I search for the proper clip name maybe I’ll find some. But still, if you know where I can buy a bunch in bulk, I’d appreciate your help.

  6. Anyone remember these? The feathers were hanging from colored leather and they clipped onto your hat or hair with a silver aligatory clip? Does anyone know where you can purchase a bunch? We’re putting on a line-dancing social for a bunch of girls and I was hoping to find a bunch of these. The ones I am finding on amazon are not as cheesy and are more expensive than I hoped. Looked at the Oriental Trading Company but they didn’t have them.

  7. Anyone have experience with these, or have a recommendation? We’re taking along road trip this early summer through mountains, and I’m looking for help for DD who gets carsick. I’ve gotten some ginger chews, and barf bags, and she has those c-bands, but thought maybe I’d check out some patches too. I’m more interested in the natural remedies, so if you have a good recommendation for some natural motion sickness patches, or anything else you’ve found helpful, I’d love to hear! Thanks!

I'll pull it out tomorrow for you!  It started as a "Colonial Williamsburg" recipe that received some modifications along the way.

Did you pull it out? I’d love to try it, too. Ds really wants to make gingerbread men this year, and your promise of chewy-crispiness sounds wonderful.

You can switch Toyota Sienna minivans with me! I'll even throw in the Uncle Moishy and Marvelous Middos Machine CDs but not my Kivi and Tuki CDs. Equal swap: 2005 Sienna for yours without a CD player.

    🙃

lol! I’ll check with DH 😉 Technological changes have always been frustrating to me, even though they are often for the better. I just don’t like the feeling of being told a technology which is younger than me (and I’m not *that* old!) is obsolete! Physically, I’m probably a bit younger then I actually am, but emotionally I’m a cranky 85 year old woman!

I looked at this review about the ports in the 2023 Sienna. I don't see an aux port, but there is a 12 volt charging port which I used for many years in my old Sienna for a Bluetooth receiver that acted as a very local radio station so I could play my own music in the car. This should work if you got one of the Bluetooth enabled CD players linked by a pp. There is also a Toyota article about playing your music from a USB drive. This might be the way to go if it operates in a manner you can get used to because USB drives can hold SO much music these days.

That is awesome! Thanks for the info 😊

    Would any of THESE help?

I did look at some of those, and it appears that they connect to a separate Bluetooth speaker, not the car’s audio system. There was one that said it could connect to the car’s speakers if the audio files were WAV files, and to check before buying. I will keep scrolling through and reading reviews.

Do you know the year and model of your car? The Internet probably knows what ports your car has. Then our technical suggestions could get more specific.

Since where we are used car prices are almost as high as new, we opted to go for a 2023-2024 (not sure which it’ll be) Toyota Sienna, the Woodland edition. Well, DH decided—it was hard for me to give up the extra 8th seat. But it should serve us well for years to come. I thought about calling the dealership, but was going to check on here first, so I didn’t end up sounding like quite the clueless girl as I would without knowledge from you all!

I don't know about the apps and such, but it's aux cord, and your car (the new one) should have a port for it. It's the little cord that connects headphones to the bottom of an mp3 or similar. I *think* even the new cars have those.

AUXcord! Of course. Ha. Duh. 😛

  13. Just got back from the library to ask the new young assistant librarian about ‘playaways,’ which apparently can connect to your car through an ‘oxcord,’ which I am not sure the new car will have a port for. She was full of stories about little kids who come in and have no idea what a DVD is, or how to take CDs out of their cases. I don’t think she was intentionally trying to make me feel old, but she sure did!

SO, since it is downloading stories from an app, what is your favorite app for that? I tried librivox years ago and was not impressed with the readers. Has it improved?

I did have one years ago but gave up because too much skipping. It’s probably time to use your smartphone or an mp3 player.

DH recently unearthed an ancient one in some long forgotten box. DS thought it was HILARIOUS that we put up with such awful sound quality; he had a hard time believing me that was high tech back in the day, lol.

Is there a reason you don't just listen to your music through your phone? You probably still have options--like the portable CD players we used to use--but the days are limited and they really are dismal (and probably more expensive than a music subscription).

I guess I forgot to mention we do not have a smartphone. We are trying to keep from having to get one for a number of reasons. We do have an mp3 music player (I think that is what it is) that we probably can put audiobooks on, but having to transfer them to a computer (which the only computer we have that we could do that on is at DH’s office) or whatever and then to the player (and delete them and and then re-add them, etc, depending on DH’s whims) would add steps that I was hoping to avoid if we could just get a CD player compatible with the car. That all just seems like too much to add to an already long list of things to get ready for a long trip. Hmm. It’s a bummer about the skipping. How can we have cars that drive themselves, but can’t have CD players that don’t skip? 😝 And what on earth are we going to do with all our CDs once they’re completely obsolete?

  15. The day I have dreaded is upon me: having a car without a CD player. Have any of you found a cd player like a Walkman that connects to your car’s Bluetooth and uses the car’s speaker? I see Amazon has a number of Walkman players that connect to a separate Bluetooth speaker, but I’d really like to not have more things in the car—especially on long roadtrips. The new vehicle will be a Toyota, if that has any bearing on it. Thanks in advance!

I found a picture of my set online!! Mine still has the roof on the stable (it’s red), but I’m missing the big green tree in the set in the picture. I have the 3 smaller trees. (I always loved the trees—sometimes the wise men were traveling through them, sometimes it was the sheep.) None of the pieces are more than 2 inches tall.

We had this growing up, and I LOVED it! Would love to have one now for my kids, but the one my parents had ended up at my sister’s house.

  17. We also use Proton Mail. DH takes privacy on the internet seriously, even randomly googling our names and finding ways to remove information about ourselves from sites. He researched it a lot and decided we should go with Proton. We’ve had it a number of years and we’ve never had any problems with phishing, unsolicited emails, etc. Unfortunately, only emails to and from other proton users are encrypted, but as we don’t send very sensitive info by email it doesn’t bother us too much. DH things it is a lot more secure than many providers out there. Just our two cents!

  18. I’d second MP’s Traditional Spelling. The pages are the same format for each week, and they do just write the words on two of the days, but I am really liking it. It is simple, quick, and effective. There are different activities to do with your kid each day (if you want, sometimes I don’t get around to it), so even if the pages feel monotonous, you can have a bit of fun with the activities. Once DS got used to the format, he can mostly do it on his own. I have tried a number of programs, but this is the only one I have really liked.

Agree with you about the tone of the new Apologia books. We used just General and bailed. I don’t like our current choice, either, but it gets done.

Second frustration of homeschooling: science for all levels that’s just interested in teaching correct science, not theology.

AMEN! Why is it so hard to just find a solid, good science program that covers theories, but lets the parents teach what they believe about some of that?

Did you use the videos that went with the course? DD really likes science and has been wanting to do experiments and stuff, so I think she would like this. But I also don’t want one that is too preachy or condescending.
