When a lesson just isn't clicking with kids (in the primary grade) and you need to end the lesson earlier than you planned, how do you do it? What do you say? (I'd love to see a script) How do you avoid a "giving up" mentality from developing in the child?
So for example, our kindergarten math lesson today was on following the pattern to build a staircase on the abacus with even numbers. LO just wasn't seeing the pattern, even with leading. So how do I finish the lesson on a positive note? How to I tell LO that her staircase is wrong and we will try it again tomorrow - or some late date?

I'm wondering what you ended up getting! Any updates, please?

I recently had an AAS book cut & coil bound at FedEx. They did OK with it, but I'd imagine the quality of their work depends on the individual worker. It cost $7.

Here's something completely different: Leira
... following the pattern of the English/Irish name Keira / Ciara ... see their pronunciation here: http://www.babynamesofireland.com/keira

We recently read The Big Snow by Berta & Elmer Hader, and immediately I thought of this thread! It's just about animals preparing for winter. It's a longer picture book and won the Caldecott Medal in 1949.

For the K-2 crowd --- Show and Tell! The kiddos do 90% of the work! The hardest part for the teacher is keeping them polite audience members for the entire hour, but brain breaks can help with this.

I realize this won't help you for your flight but maybe for your return flight or for future reference ....
I bet your kids would like Signing Times!

Pingu is gentle - and there's no intelligible language, just sounds.
Caillou's whining is annoying, IMO.
Mr. Roger's Neighborhood is on Amazon.

Not intending to hijack the thread, but I was wondering ...
FairProspects, where did you get the Build to Express set and the Story Starter kit? Just from Lego education?

Outsource it?!? If you purchase latex balloons at our Wal-Mart, you can pay to have them fill it with helium and attach ribbon to it. It's much cheaper to do this than to buy helium latex balloons at the florist at the grocery store.

We are fans! In fact, we had a Shaun birthday cake a couple of years ago!!

FYI- You can get a discount to their gold membership level through homeschool buyers co-op.

MCT reads some of the poetry in the iBooks! I'm guessing that the pictures, especially in Caesar's English, would be nicer in an iBook. I think there are some other interactive components to their iBooks, but I'm not sure.

Thank you, all!
You've given me exactly what I was looking for!

I'm thinking about getting the family a big set of Unit Blocks for Christmas.
Can the Hive give me the low-down (or is it down-low?!?) on Unit Blocks?
Any recommendations of good brands (or brands to avoid), places to purchase, etc?
Rubberwood vs. Maple? Is Maple really worth the extra expense.
Optimum number of block designs/shapes? Most popular design? Least used design? (Arches, ramps, etc.)
Minimum number of blocks for a medium sized family?
Thanks in advance!

Although there's no talking involved & it's technically from the UK ... Shaun the Sheep is always good, clean fun for the entire family. You can watch episodes online through Amazon.
Leap Year is a clean movie that is set in Ireland.

Lots of good suggestions, I will add:
My Father's Dragon series
Toys Go Out, Toys Dance Party
Berenstain Bears series (may need to preread since series covers some scary things, but Mama Bear explains the world very well to her cubs)
While we love My Father's Dragon & Toys Go Out & Toys Dance Party ... I am not sure they would meet OP needs. All of these books kept my LOs on the edge of their seat in suspense. And I get the impression that that suspense is what needs to be avoided.
What about some Fractured Fairy Tales? If he already knows the original tale, would he be able to find the humor?
The Eensy Weensy Spider Freaks Out (Big Time) by Troy Cummings
Little Pea by Amy Krouse Rosenthal (Little Hoot is similar)
Previously by Allen Ahlberg

an iPad-related gift - Appmates cars that you can use to play with on the corresponding free iPad game. Target carried them once upon a time. I think they had Cars, Angry Birds, etc.
non-iPad gift ... I second the remote control cars/helicopters idea. Also, maybe Perplexus, nerf guns,

Another Bushy-loving family here ... When our Tag-Along child spotted a squirrel in the yard, he said "Look! There's Bushy; I think he's hunting for nouns!"

We just discovered Toys Go Out by Emily Jenkins. All of the other rec's are good too! And the Little House books could be started too.

If you are going to go the MCT route, I'd get Grammar Island (Teacher's Manual) and Practice Island (Teacher's Manual) as a minimum. Optionally, I'd add on Practice Island Student book. Grammar Island introduces the grammar concepts, while Practice Island is where DC will "put it into action." Grammar Island can be done in a couple of weeks/months depending on your pacing - but it definitely won't last an entire year. Practice Island has 100 sentences to analyze. The combination of the two books ought to get you through a whole year.
Side note: Be sure to check the TM when doing PI because there are times where the teacher needs to introduce details that are not covered in GI. (For example, active v. passive voice, possessive pronouns, 4 types of sentences, verb tenses, etc)
How do you "back off" a lesson peacefully?

Thanks for all the different ideas; I will start trying them as soon as I can!
Transitions are difficult for me, so I really appreciate the concrete examples you gave.
