  1. I guess the question boils down to: catch up to what? Nothing is impossible, but many paths would seem improbable.

While I don't doubt that the kid caught up, there is no such thing as getting a B on a part of the SAT.

Well my memory is probably faulty on how she worded her post, but I assume she was posting the info in a manner that everyone, including the international posters, could understand. Basically, that while he didn't get a top score, he still did okay. Or perhaps she said 80%, and I remembered it incorrectly.

Addressing the other person who doubted my story (I'm on my phone and can't remember who), I'm not making this up, and although I don't know Julie irl, it didn't sound as if she was making it up either. But I realize it doesn't track with the WTM forum mind set, so I shouldn't have mentioned it.

  2. I used to be part of the Living Math Yahoo Group. The owner of the group and website, Julie Brennan, posted about tutoring a young man to catch up. He was 20 years old, and was unschooled, but with no math knowledge other than making change. He wanted to go to college. He was able to speak Chinese fluently, so he had some benefits to his schooling.

She said she tutored him once a week, and he did Kahn Academy the rest of the week. I can't remember how long they did this, perhaps six months. He took the SAT and got a B on the math portion.

  3. I was also disappointed in Rory. I think things are coming full circle, and Logan is her Christopher and Jess is her Luke. However, I don't really want to see the same story played out again. I realize there will be some differences, but the same story is depressing.

What bugged me is Amy Sherman Palladino ignoring Season 7, except for things she couldn't ignore, like Lane's kids. Lorelai not remembering a good memory of her father didn't make sense after that touching speech he made at Rory's going away party in the Season 7 finale. What happened with Logan getting away from his father, and working in San Francisco? I was hoping Zach and Lane would have been more successful with their music, but his gig with the famous band was never mentioned. Rory's time on the Obama campaign was also never mentioned. I thought she would be more successful also. Lorelai and Luke were communicating at the end of Season 7, and now suddenly they don't talk? It's like you should go straight from Season 6 to Season 7, and you're still waiting on the characters to grow up. The problem is that I did watch Season 7, and it's nine years later. They should have matured by now. I know they need drama, but I think they could have come up with something better.

However, my expectations were low, and I enjoyed it overall. Although, count me in as one who wishes there had been less musical and more Lane/Mrs. Kim.

  4. I never said being gay or bi was a medical condition. Everything about us is biology, though. Sometimes, the biology causes a dysfunction and needs to be treated to prevent harm, like me having OCD. Some biological traits, like me being bi or you being straight (I'm assuming) are not dysfunctional.

I added to my post that I saw you answered it below me.

I think that religious people who believe it is a sin see it as dysfunctional, and harmful to the person and society.

I was raised that it was a sin, and have evolved to believe that it is not a sin, and that people should have partners. It's hard to be alone, and no one should be discriminated against. However, I haven't quite gotten to the point that I think homosexuality is just as good for the person or society as being heterosexual. Rome wasn't built in a day, lol.

  5. So what you're saying here is that if I have a tumor on my hypothalamus that causes me to eat everything in the house because I feel permanently ravenous, I'm sinning.

If I have Tourette Syndrome and I compulsively say something like "God d*** it!" repeatedly, I'm sinning.

If a woman is born with a ridiculously curvy figure and looks "immodest" even in the world's baggiest mumu (I'm looking at you, Christina Hendricks ;)) she's sinning every time she leaves the house and people look at her.

If the ability or inability to sin is sometimes beyond a person's control, what the heck is even the point?

I'm not sure this analogy works, at least comparing homosexuality to a medical condition. A medical condition such as overeating would be considered something to be cured, a negative to be overcome. It wouldn't be considered a sin, but it's also something the person desperately wants to change because it impacts their life negatively. I'm not sure that's how most here would define homosexuality, as a medical condition to be cured.

ETA: I see you addressed this below. Posting at the same time I guess!

  6. I think there is additional tension when the spouses don't agree. You could have one spouse willing to accept the child's lifestyle, and one who won't. The accepting spouse is faced with the possibility of losing the closeness the family once had. So, it's not just losing the support of the faith community, there is the aspect of not wanting to lose the marriage either, assuming the spouse is an otherwise nice person, and just has conservative religious views. But yet the accepting spouse wants to support the child also.

  7. It doesn't mean girls experiment because it is cool. There are many reading girls in particular prefer girls for a time or are "fag hags" which have less to do with cool than they have to do with safety and sexual maturity.

I can see this. I think there is a lot of pressure on young women today to look perfect, to be perfect. OTH, there is the danger of date rape. I think it takes a lot of pressure off to opt out for awhile, until they are more mature.

  8. I honestly believe that this is possibly happening, but it remains to be seen to what extent.

I can't tell if more people are just willing to come out or finding it easier to come out, or if some people are wanting to be a member of a club and get attention.  I have reason to believe the first scenario is not outrageous.  Probably this isn't so much in very conservative areas, but in liberal areas definitely.  I mean here it is good enough for a kid to go to a guidance counselor at school and tell them they think they are XYZ and that sets in motion a whole bunch of things for the kid including actions taken despite the parent's permission.

There are organizations on the Internet where kids can contact strangers to get them stuff that could potentially be hazardous to their health but this is all done behind the parent's back.  And I don't think we know enough about when these situations are about the actually being gay or trans or if it is something else.

edited...sorry i meant the second scenario is not outrageous...

I agree. And it probably does depend on where you live. Although, my evidence is all anecdotal, but I think it is more widespread than people realize.

  9. So, I was sad most of the Paula's choice stuff didn't work for me, but I did get a sample of the BHA that worked...and basically learned that I'm a BHA girl, not AHA. And that Vitamin C serum worked okay and didn't but me, but retinol did to some extent. So, taking that and some reviews I read I picked up some Cerave SA Moisturizer today, it has salicylic acid (BHA) and some other good stuff, and is for extra dry skin. (I have dry, sensitive skin that also has blocked pores/giant pores...probably from the moisturizer I've been using that is not meant for faces). I used it tonight and it feels so good! No irritation! I'm hopeful it will work for me, and wouldn't have found it or tried it without this thread or experimenting with the samples at paula's choice. So thanks!

CeraVe has a lot of great products, and it's formulated for sensitive skin. I don't like jar packaging however, as any antioxidants in the product will disintegrate once exposed to air. The BHA should be okay, however.

Paula's Choice has a 1% BHA Lotion, which is not as strong as the 2% versions. That might work for you.

Here is Beautypedia's list of the best BHA products.

  10. You could try a subscription box. I subscribe to Ipsy, and I get five samples for $10 per month. They have skincare too, but you can choose makeup only in your profile choices, I believe.

Wet n Wild is a very affordable drugstore brand, but surprisingly the quality of a lot of their products is good. Hard Candy has some good products also. The drugstore makeup companies have stepped up their game in the last few years.

  11. Agree, vitamin c serum and retin A every other night here. I have fallen off the wagon with AHA but will get on it soon. And a good sunscreen over the vitamin C each day, I use euro sunscreens as they are still better than US ones.

I have been using cerave eye cream and cerave night cream over the retin A because the one I'm currently using dries me out horribly.

It's not that much work when all the stuff is right there. Well, except the Vit C, which is kept in fridge.

I use acids (on my face!) weekly too

CeraVe has some really good products. PC's Beautypedia website rates them pretty highly.

I forgot to mention that I also use Paula's Choice shampoo and conditioner. I've developed an allergy to fragrance, and need fragrance free.

  12. Okay, so used the Recovery cleanser and toner today, the 4% aha from the resist line, and then the recovery moisturizer/sunscreen. I skipped the retinol (oops). It burned maybe a little, but seems fine now. No irritation beyond that. If I was smart I'd do the AHA at night, rather than right out of the shower when my skin is most irritated, that was kind of dumb.

So, we shall see. I almost think my pores already look smaller...could I see results that quickly?

Oh and I like the Recovery sunscreen moisturizer much better than the Resist one, ti seems lighter.

I think you can see results pretty quickly. The exfoliants get the oil and other substances out that can clog pores, which makes them look smaller. I also noticed a difference pretty quickly with Retin A, and I assume it would be similar with Retinol.

  13. I've read that most people need a good, gentle cleanser, a chemical exfoliant (AHA or BHA), Retinol or Retin A, a Vitamin C and/or antioxidant serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen.

My favorite product was the 2% BHA Gel. I had oily skin with breakouts, and it kept my skin completely clear and smooth. The only reason I stopped using it every day was because I started Retin A, and that also keeps my breakout free. Although pricier than drugstore, PC has better prices than most high end. If I had the money, I'd buy all my products from them, but I use their Beautypedia website to find drugstore alternatives, that are almost as good.

Here is my current routine. Prior to using Retin A, I had a different routine as my skin was oilier. Now, it's more normal/dry.

Morning: Wash with CeraVe Cleanser for Normal/Dry Skin

                   Resist Toner

Sunscreen-I use Neutrogena Pure & Free, or Neutrogena Healthy Skin for Sensitive Skin (fragrance free)

Evening: Wash with Oil of Olay Foaming Cleanser for Sensitive Skin

                   Resist Toner

Every other night - Retin A

                   Resist Antioxidant Serum

CeraVe Retinol Serum for my neck

                   CeraVe PM Moisturizer

In the middle of the week, on a non-Retin A night, I'll use PC 2% BHA. At the end of the week, I'll use Alpha Hydroxy's AHA Lotion.

I think they are great products, especially if you have sensitive skin or aging skin that's oily. I think no one can compete with their BHA products. Outside of that, you can find products just as good elsewhere, although they might be pricier. One thing I don't use, that I should be using, is a Vitamin C Serum. Most people put it on in the morning before their sunscreen. I've tried Timeless Vitamin C Serum, as it gets good reviews, but I hated having to store it in the fridge.

My daughter is 15, and she loves the Paula's Choice Clear line.

  14. Actually, I'm glad to be reminded of that because the sunscreens from PC are pretty much the only products there I don't really care for! Can you recommend a non-greasy, fragrance-free sunscreen for the face?

I rarely wear sunscreen, honestly, but I don't spend much time in the sun! Now, with all the hiking I'm getting into your post reminded me that I should be using it!

I like Neutrogena Pure & Free. You can only get it at Ulta or Drugstore.com.

  15. Ok, help me out. I've used PC for years. I use BHA at night and AHA in the morning. I have oily skin and large pores. How can retinol, glycolic acid peel and lactic acid mask help me?? I'm always open to new ways to look good!

I've also used PC BHA and AHA for years. But I'm 56, so started Retin A for those fine lines that are getting worse.

It takes six months to see results on wrinkles, but my face looks brighter and my pores are smaller. I still use an exfoliant once a week to get rid of dead skin.

  16. How does that work, getting it without a script. I've had a script, but its a pain to make an appt just to get the script or to remember to ask for it while I am having my annual. I would LOVE to just be able to buy it. My mom has bought it OTC in...Mexico?

To be honest, I'm not sure how they do it. I believe they get it from India, which doesn't require a script.

Kaysa Beauty is more expensive than All Day Chemist. However, I can use my credit card. I think you have to use a checking account to purchase from All Day Chemist.

  17. I'm 45 and the wrinkles are starting to show up! It makes me sadder than it should really. If I could go back to age 30 I would start using Retina A earlier. I believe it's the only thing that is really proven to help with aging and skin issues. You can't use it if you're pregnant or breast feeding. And make sure you use sunblock every day. I have been good about that and I don't have any sun damage at all. But my skin is dry and thin and pale and prone to wrinkles. I love products and always get caught up in the hype, but the research shows that Retina A is your best bet. It's a generic drug now so I guess not a lot of people are making money off it, so no real advertising. And not retinol - that's not the same thing. Need the prescription for Retina A.

I just got a new tube of Retina A with a prescription and it was $70. I got mine from the dermatologist when I went in to have something checked, but I know some friends get it from their OB or regular GP. It's pretty well accepted. That should last me 4-6 months. For moisturizer I use avocado oil and Eucerin 30 SPF.

I just started Retin A, the .05%. Too early to see results yet.

You can get it without prescription online. I buy mine from Kaysa Beauty for about $25. I did a lot of research on how to use it.

I find using an AHA once a week helps with the flaking and my skin looks better.

  18. So you are saying at a few weeks shy of 40 years old my routine of "splash plain water on face, maybe use a washcloth" bedtime routine and "apply Aveeno Baby Moisture Cream" after my shower in the morning may not be enough?

I do like DHC's oil cleanser, I've used that in the past a bit.

Guess I'll head over to Paula's Choice. (although my sister also never washes her face, and also has good skin....my poor mother was flabbergasted when she asked us what we use to cleanse and we both said "nothing")

Staying out of the sun and genetics are probably the main components to good skin.

I use PC, and I have sensitive, acne prone skin. It makes a big difference for me.

You might want to add an exfoliant to the mix. A good AHA (dry skin) or BHA (oily skin) can help keep skin smooth.

  19. Well, I think the partial list I posted earlier explains just how the government can effectively run schools for the general population at the expense of the tax-payers (the community), rather than education being dependent upon financial means (private only). Ultimately, however, you don't have to agree they should have any hand in the private/homeschool sector. The conversation will happen anyway, and it will include those who do not have children in homeschool, but who recognize the value of education on society in general.

I have no problem with eliminating inaccurate education, and would be more than happy to see YEC education disappear. However, as a relaxed homeschooler, bordering on unschooling, I wonder how government interference would affect my freedom in following those methods.

One difference is in what constitutes as evidence, and the critical analysis that follows. Religious faith allows for personal experience to be considered evidence, and the critical analysis that follows is understood to be legitimate based on factors inadmissible in the scientific method because of its subjective nature. Your example of having faith in a surgeon can be corroborated (or not) based on objective data - his/her history, education, experience, success rate, etc. Your faith that what you've heard about God being true (ie, Jesus was/is god-man who can change reality by sheer will) simply cannot be corroborated. It's reasons like this some people do not agree science and faith are not opposites. Fundamentally, they start with different premises, and they go in different directions immediately.

Although, when it comes to age of the earth, I do have to accept it on faith. I accept the findings of the majority of scientists, because I find that more logical. Also, I find it more logical to accept some science on faith, because of the science I can verify through other methods. However, unless you are a scientific expert in that field, you have to accept some science on faith.

  20. Living in Arizona most of my life, I would like to try snow, lol. Although, I'd probably freeze to death with my thin, desert blood.

We've traveled with my dh on cross country trips for his driving job. These are the cities I liked from those trips. I think OKC would be my top choice, but we have family there.

  21. I'm still evolving and searching for "the way." Perhaps I always will be. I still attend the same type of church I have for the last 30 years. It is a community I feel comfortable in, even though I have moved beyond its doctrinal stance. Even though I am an introvert, I feel the need for community. I know of no other way to be a part of one. May come a time when I will have to find another way. I'm also not much into "worship." I do love the singing (acapella) and that feels more like meditation and communion with those around me. Blending our voices in harmony is a very moving experience. In fact, I've retranslated most of what my church does to apply to my own beliefs about God, life, and religion. I can agree with many doctrinal statements, but my definition and reasoning would be totally different than those around me. With things I do not agree, I either find a gentle way to bring an alternative viewpoint or keep my mouth shut if I know it will be too controversial.

Your post had echoes sounding in my heart and spirit.

We, too, go to a Christian church that features acapella singing. I enjoy hearing people's voices blend in praise, worship. I wonder if it's the same name as ours--with a legalistic heritage it's trying to grow out of...

I'm guessing I go to the same type of church as both of you. I also have had a similar journey. I don't want to leave the community, but my beliefs don't line up anymore. I still believe in God, but am questioning everything else.

Fortunately, living in the west, my church is more progressive, and is focusing on community outreach (homeless programs, etc.). Since my church organizes it, it makes it easier for me to join in, and volunteer.

I'm also still committed to attending church because of my dh and dd. I can handle church, and I also enjoy the singing. However, I've had to give up all the Bible studies. I just can't pretend that much. It was really hard giving up the smaller community of Ladies Bible Class, but I just didn't fit in anymore.

Anyway, I enjoyed both of your posts, and am glad I'm not alone!
