  1. I love Sonlight for both reading and LA at the early ages. The books are a great selection. The ig also has questions to ask about both the read alouds and the readers. Their LA program is imo deceptively simple. Day one is copywork. Kids get to see and write proper sentences. Day 2 is mechanics, Day 3 pre-write, Day 4 writing assignment. I have been amazed at how much dd has improved without overwhelming her. Dd had always been a reluctant writer and this program has give her both skills and confidence.

  2. We have done some of the earlier ones (B & C). Dd really liked them but some of the experiments did not match up really well but then again some of the topics did not really line up with experiments. There really are not a ton of experiments when doing animals. The expermients seemed to be their own topic. I do think the experiments start to really line up with the subject matter in the older grades though. I will be interested to hear what others think.

  3. Alg. ½ was written first, several years before Math 87.

Personally, I preferred Math 87 back in the day, but that's probably just me. :D

I think he might have been talking about the updated edition. When I was at the booth there was someone else there asking about the differences in the editions. Either that or the rep did not knwo what he was talking about.

  4. I have used SL LA for the past two year (LA 2, LA 2 Intermediate). I have loved it. I think that it looks deceptively easy and not very meaty when it fact it is. The way they lay it out, at least in the early cores, teaches the kids method and gets them comfortable with writing. They do teach parts of speach and those are usually tied to the writing. This coming year we are doing LA D but I am also adding in Easy Grammar 4 since I think dd needs a little more grammar. I did look at Sonlight's new Grammar program for 5 and 6 and was not really thrilled. I thought it was too much condensed into 2 years. I decided to do Easy Grammar since I still find this to be a laid back approach but still gets the job done. We started Easy Grammar a couple of weeks ago (to get ahead) and dd loves it but then again she is a worksheet girl.

  5. Dd and I open it right away. This year it was actually on my bed since dh was still painting the living room. I pulled them out carefully and then dd looked through them and checked out all the ones she was excited to read. I love box day!

  6. I was talking to the Saxon rep last year and he said if they are doing around 85 or above in 87 then they could go right into Algebra 1. If they aren't doing around 85% on test then they may want to consider using 1/2 to give them a better foundation before Algebra 1. They created 1/2 so that those kids who need it could get more reinforcement and a better foundation before moving into Algebra 1 and 2.

  7. I used Sonlight Science and dd loved it but she is very much a Science kid and eats it all up. Apologia is a great Science program too. We did the Astronomy book last year with co-op and dd learned so much. I think we are doubling Science this year too and doing Swimming Creatures with our Sonlight Science.

  8. I have used Sonlight for the past two years (core b & c). I can say that it is working with dd. Does she retain everything, no but really no 8 yr old is going to. I can say that she will just start talking about things that we have studied over the past two years. One day in the car she just randomly starts talking about Queen Elizabeth and her sister Mary. She will be reading a story and it will jog her memory and she will say hey this happened in WWII with Hitler who was a bad guy.

Dd is not one who has enjoyed reading over the past couple of years but for this coming year she choose to do the advanced readers for core d. I had only been planning on doing the regular readers but she really really wanted to do the others and how do you say no to a child who wants to read more. I really love what Sonlight is developing in her.

  9. I have a seperate planner sheet that I use for non Sonlight subjects. Otherwise I follow along in our IG. If I need to make any changes to the IG schedule I either write them down on my planner sheet or just rember them. It is pretty easy to do that when you only have one child at home. When I had more than one at home I would use Homeschool tracker + to schedule stuff.

  10. We did Horizons grades 1-3. I gave dd the Saxon placement test and it placed her in 65 which is what we are doing. I looked at 54 and there were only a handful of topics that Horizons had not covered. If I had chosen 54 without the placement test dd would have been bored.

  11. Do not worry about the ages on Artistic Pursuits. I think you could use the k-3 all the way through elementary school. What we did this past year was to do the reading about the artist and the looking at the art work one day and then the project on another day. It worked out really well for us and I was pretty much able to get through everything I wanted (I did a combination of book 1 and book 2 so I could follow along with our history).

  12. We got a set of the videos cheap at a used curriculum sale. We are going to have dd try them out this year to see if she really enjoys playing the piano or not. If so then we will look at budgeting for lessons next year. I got CLE's light units to work on the theory aspect since Simply Music does not really cover it.

  13. I think it depends on the curriculum and the grade level. There are some science programs that at middle school levels really do build on the previous year. You can move from one curriculum to another even if they build upon each other, all you have to do is figure out where your child is. I do not think curriculum jumping is necessarily beneficial. If you find something that works well it is ok to stick with it just as if it is not working well you have the freedom to change.

  14. I have been using Artistic Pursuits K-3 for the past 2 years. I would start with book 1. There is some building but not so much that if you did start with another book you could not teach them yourself (things like blending colors). The reason I would start with book 1 is that the art history aspect is fairly chronological. You could even use thes books with older elementary and even jr high kids imo.

  15. It may not look like you are doing alot but oh do the kids learn. We have done Core B and Core C (as listed in the new catalog). Dd has loved it and has learned so much about history. We were in the car the other day she just starts talking about Queen Elizabeth I and "Blood" Mary. Mind you we did that months ago. Dd loves the timeline and will just go through it sometime (she says she does not like history either). The LA also looks fairly simplistic but it works. I have seen improvement in her writting as the year has gone on. She also does not complain about doing LA any more which to me is a huge thing. We did not do alot of hands on stuff but I did do some incorporated with our art days. Handle On the Arts has a great program that accompanies B & C.

  16. Sonlight can work with multiple age kids although I think it would be difficult to do the 4th grader and 1st grader with the same Core. You could do one Core for 4th grade and then one for 2nd and 1st grade together. Sonlight's core consists of History, Geography, Reading and Read Alouds. They also have a LA program that ties into the reading. Sonlight is a complete curriculum for those areas you do need to add on Math, Handwriting and Science. I think you could do 1 Science for all 3 ages though. Sonlight does not require alot of planning time but does require you to have time to read to your kids. I know some folks who use multiple cores that have one child work on on your own material (handwriting, Math...) while they read to the other one and then vice versa. Some also use the read alouds as bed time stories or just skip some of them. I love it but then again I only have 1 child at home right now.

  17. We are doing Sonlight Science 2 and Apologia Astronomy this year. You really could do both in a year. My suggestion would be that you do the 4 day Sonlight Science and have your 5th day be Astronomy. If you do 2 weeks per lesson it would only take you about 28 weeks to do Astronomy. This is working really well for dd and we are using the 5 day Science from Sonlight, we do our experiments on the weekends with Daddy.

  18. Hands on History is correlated with SL 1 and 2

This is really an awesome collection of projects. Also if you use Artistic Pursuits there are alot of great projects that go along with that. I also just go to the Library, they have books on projects that go along with the various periods in history. We also have done a variety of feasts based on food of that time/culture. Dd loves when we do that.
