  1. I've been using Galloping the Globe, but since I have added in many countries that are not included, I've found that it is all very easy to do just by searching the internet and library...find a printable map and flag to color and then check out a bunch of books about/from that country. There's also a geography story list from hss here:

    http://www.homeschoolshare.com/master_geography_index.php.

This blog has some more great ideas:

For workbooks, Evan-Moor and Rand McNally have some good ones.

http://www.amazon.com/McNally-Schoolhouse-Beginner-Geography-Activities/dp/0528934694 They also have some games and cards if you search.

There's also Veritas Press Leagues and Legends, which I haven't used but have wondered about. For US geography, there is also Beautiful Feet Geography Through Literature and Across America. HTH!

  2. You NC homeschoolers have it good! In Hawaii, a high school diploma is only acknowledged if it is from a regionally accredited school, and no credits are given for homeschooling.

I just recently filled out a college federal financial aid FAFSA form, and it gave three options, diploma, GED, or homeschooled. :)

  3. I'm doing a gentle introduction to world geography, mostly with library books with Galloping The Globe as our guide, plus online resources and blogs like http://www.homeschoolcreations.blogspot.com. There's also a GTG yahoo group with lots of great ideas. Since language arts and math are our main focus, geography is 'just for fun'. I add in science and art with it. I'm pregnant with a 2 year old in tow, so for now, it's all short and sweet. Here's all of what we're using and are very happy with it all:

    Language Arts: McRuffy 1st Grade

    Math: CLE Math 1

    Geography: Galloping The Globe

Science: Science Around The World and The Complete Book Of Animals

Art: Draw Write Now (Book 7 and 8 are animals around the world)

Literature: Library books about each country

I've started book lists for each country we visit on my blog here.

I hope that helps give some more ideas! :)

Do you think I'd get fined if I filled in 'Human' as my race? Only Question #1 for me.

  5. I agree it does not look like ringworm. Ringworm is a perfect circle/ring shape, hence the name, and is very easy to recognize as it gets bigger. I've found oregano oil works well for this, too, and before I knew about it, hydrogen peroxide made it go away very fast as well.

Coconut oil is really miraculous for eczema. Please try it! It is so simple, but very effective.

  6. A natural petroleum-free alternative to Vic's Rub is EUCALYPTUS OIL. Put a few drops on their feet, on their chest or back, just not too close to the eyes, add a carrier oil if needed.

Eucalyptus oil is good to inhale with steam for a cough. Add it to the bath and close all the windows and doors, add it to boiling water and inhale.

Oregano oil has been very successful for me. I add a drop in a tspn of coconut or olive oil and put it on the feet. It has brought down a fever quickly.

  7. Do you just spray this on their bodies? In their mouths? Is it a preventative moreso than a treatment?

I mix the essential oils in a carrier oil (like olive oil or coconut oil). Then I put a small amount of this mix into a spray bottle and fill the rest with water. When we go out, I spray it on my kids clothes, chest and back area, and on hands after touching stuff, careful to avoid the eyes. I put it on every hour or so or right before and after touching public stuff like shopping carts.

This site has a recipe, just add equal proportions (except oregano oil, only 1 drop of that, it can burn the skin if you add too much or not dilute enough).

Essential oils are for external use only. Don't put them in the mouth or on the face, it can burn the eyes and areas close to mucous membranes. (Only oregano oil can be taken internally).

These can be used for prevention, and can also greatly reduce the chances of getting secondary infections for those who are already sick. (It kills staph, and eucalyptus is really good for clearing the lungs and stuffy noses.) I read one study where they put a few drops on a dish of staph and it was all killed in 5 minutes.

  8. Here's some links on thieves oil:

99.96 Percent Kill Rate against Bacteria

Young Living’s Thieves Oil has been scientifically proven to kill deadly germs. Research from Weber State University in Utah has shown that it has a 99.96 percent kill rate against airborne bacteria. It was proven to be highly anti-infectious, antiviral, antibacterial, and antiseptic.

*Research shows that Young Livings Thieves Oil effectively interrupts the life cycle of bacteria and also interferes with the ability of viruses to replicate. Studies also confirmed that most viruses and bacteria cannot live in the presence of many essential oils, including two of the oils found in the Thieves Essential Oil Blend, cinnamon and clove.

According to the story, a recent study by a group of surgeons found that a solution made with cinnamon oil killed a number of common and hospital-acquired infections, like streptococcus and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA–and in fact, did so as effectively as several antiseptics widely used in hospitals. Another study by French researchers in 2008 had similar results, showing that at concentrations of 10 percent or less, cinnamon oil was effective against Staphylococcus, E. coli and several antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.

I also add lavender because I love the smell, and 1 drop of oregano oil because I'm convinced on how effective it is. It's a lot cheaper to buy bottles of each when your health food store has a sale.

My dh had pneumonia 5 times as a kid, and this has really helped his lungs, and he doesn't have a chronic cough anymore.

  9. Me and my kids are unvaxed and we've never had the flu before in our lives.

A few weeks ago, my 5 year old played a soccer game and one kid (and family) on his team had just gotten over h1n1. They shared orange slices from the same container. I sprayed us all with my essential oil blend and we have not had any sickness. In fact, we haven't had any sickness for over a year since I started using it. (Clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus, rosemary, lavender, oregano diluted in olive oil.)

  10. The Britax Boulevard would be extra nice for your situation because the height of the shoulder straps can be adjusted by turning a nob. You will not need to rethread the straps to different slots like with other carseats. The shoulder straps should be at or below the shoulders for rear facing and at or above the shoulders for forward facing.

The Boulevard also has extra side impact protection and rear faces up to 35 lbs. I just got one from Amazon for a lot cheaper than anywhere else.

  11. Oregano Oil, add a drop to food everyday and also apply it externally on baby's feet, 1 drop diluted in 1 tspn carrier oil (like olive or coconut oil). This stuff works so well!

Turmeric and ginger in food and tea will help her belly, and mint, too. Make sure she drinks as much as possible to prevent dehydration.

Avoid refined sugar and corn syrup and GMO foods, these all lower the immune system.

Green powder is an easy way to get more nutrients into kid food. I add it to smoothies, homemade popsicles, and blend it up with dried fruits and nuts to make sweet balls. They like the sweets, but also get lots of vitamins and minerals in the green powder.

  12. You definitely meed the TM. There are story problems and other instructions to use the light units. The TM has the lu with answers filled in. So, if you got the TM, you could find the best place to start with light units. Counting by 5's starts in light unit 102. I just bought the TM and first 2 lu's to check out, and I think it moves pretty quickly. Even if it's review, it goes fast. Each lu is meant to last 4 weeks, 5 days/week, and each lesson is about 3 pages. HTH!

  13. Cheap guitars are usually made out of plywood, which works fine for a while, but usually ends up warping over time. More expensive guitars are usually made with nicer, aged woods that won't bend over time. A cheap $100 Costco generic guitar will still play great, and would be fine for several years depending on the climate, but probably won't make it to be passed onto grandchildren.

Taylor and Martin make some great guitars, but there are plenty of no-name guitars that play nicely. I think baby Taylor may be kind of small. I tried one, and they are made for small kid's hands. I was using a full size guitar by 14 with no problem.

Nylon strings are easier on a beginner's fingers. Steel strings may make blisters until calluses are developed. Definitely ask her which she would prefer. Electric acoustic is nice for recording and amplifying for performing, but you can also buy a pic up that hooks onto a non-electric guitar if she ever needs it.

Tuners are helpful for beginners, the ones with a needle that tells to go higher or lower, but since she plays piano, she can probably tune it with the piano if she has a good ear.

Definitely check out used music stores, pawn shops, craigslist, and Guitar Center. Because guitars get better with age, used is actually a good thing to see if it has stood the test of time. If you buy a used one, the most important things to look for is the action. This is how close the strings lay on the neck. If the neck is warped, the strings will not be touching the neck. You want to be sure that the strings are close to the neck for easier playing. Some steel string guitars have a metal rod that goes through the neck that can be adjusted with an alan wrench, to tighten or loosen and adjust the angle of the neck. If you get a steel string, this is the best for if the action changes, you can fix it easily.

She can teach herself with a chord book or a song book with tabs that show where to put the fingers, or even just from the internet. Start with one chord and practice the different ways to strum, then practice going back and forth between two chords, then add more when ready.

  14. I generally respect a Christian's view on not reading/watching HP. To each thier own when it comes to material they wish to view.

That said, I just really have to say something about the above quote. JK Rowling is Presbyterian. Last I checked that makes her a Christian - not a magical being herself with powers to infiltrate the minds of the readers. And the accusation of "sexual subliminal messages" is astounding. She does a wonderful job of depicting teen age crushes and relationships (Harry does grow from 11 years old to 17 in the books). There is nothing questionable about her delivery at all.

I was specifically talking about the movies, not the books. Sorry I wasn't clear about that. Subliminal messages work through images and sounds, so through movies, not words in books.

I've never heard of or read The Onion.
