I've got an idea spinning around in my brain, and I need some help. I'd like to design a culinary elective for my oldest for next year that involves her researching, planning, and cooking authentic cuisine from different countries and possibly different regions of the US. I was thinking maybe 2 countries/regions per month so she would have time to research and plan. Do you all have know of any resources that might be helpful? Any ideas you have would be really awesome! Thanks in advance!

What are some interesting "out of the box" electives your high schooler has done or is planning to do?

Thanks to both of you!!
Nice to see you too, Corraleno!

In our quest to decide about science for next year, we are exploring chemistry options. It might be that we decide to do DE for chemistry in 11th or 12th, but I'd like to look at options in case my dd ends up doing it at home next year in 10th grade.
I cannot teach her chemistry. I can attempt to help her, but I can't guarantee that I will be able to help a lot. I barely passed high school chemistry, and I have a fear of it.
So what I'm looking for is a chemistry that is completely hands off for the parent. Does that exist? My dd is a good student, very bright, and quite mathy, ftr. I don't know if she's headed for a STEM career or not.
I'm going to look at the big chemistry thread again.

My dd is using America: A Narrative History by Tindall for Early Modern this year (along with some readings from Spielvogel's WC). We could continue with this combo for next year for Modern history, but I think the volume of reading might be too much. So what's your favorite spine for Modern?
Thanks!

I'm working on the rest of my daughter's freshman year and thinking ahead to next year. I'd like to talk about writing, where she is, where she's going, and what you all think.
This year, we started with Excellence in Literature and Writing With Skill 3. It quickly became obvious that that was too much, so after talking with the author of EIL, we dropped WWS. There's a lot of writing in EIL, and Anna also writes a short paper every 1-2 weeks for history. I just bought The Elegant Essay so we are working through that just to tie up any loose ends. I feel pretty good about this plan for now. I think I need to assign a longer research paper for the end of the year, but I don't really know how. Any advice?
The next part of my question is where do we go from here? I really like EIL, and I'd like to use the American Lit package for next year. I don't know what kind of writing assignments to add to it to cover what we need to cover for high school. Any advice on that? I'm planning to get my copy of WTM out and reread through the high school recommendations again. I've seriously considered putting her in a WTM Academy class next year, but I don't know. Anna says she might want to pursue a career in writing. She loves to write.
Thanks for any help!

I'm thinking of enrolling my current freshman in this class in the fall. I would love to hear your reviews!
Thanks!

I would not use SOTW for an 8th grader. I don't know what HoTW is. I know a lot of people like Human Odyssey for the middle school years. I used History Odyssey for my oldest for that age and plan to use it next year for my middle as well. She will be in 7th grade.

I'm not sure if anyone has posted this, but here's the list from Excellence in Literature for British Lit.

Thank you both! EIW and W&R are two that I have been considering!

My middle dd is 11, 6th grade. She has been "behind" in many subjects throughout elementary school due to extreme anxiety. That is now being treated, and she is progressing well. She did WWE 1-3 in grades 2-5, and then this year we needed something different so she's working through selected lessons from Intermediate Language Lessons 1-3 and doing written summaries and outlining from her history readings. It is going well; she has progressed so much in the last few months.
My oldest was a very reluctant writer, and she didn't write a paragraph without tears until 5th or 6th grade. She started WWS sometime around 7th grade, and she completed levels 1&2. I had planned for middle dd to do WWS as well because I think it's a great program. But middle dd is so different than oldest dd, and I'm concerned that WWS won't be the best fit.
So what are your favorite late elementary/middle school writing programs? Thanks!

My dd is currently a freshman and is doing biology. I'm thinking ahead to next year, which would traditionally be chemistry, yes? I cannot teach her chemistry. I recognize my limits, lol. So I will definitely need to outsource chemistry. I am currently looking at online options since she's not old enough to dual enroll at the cc.
She and I were discussing science this week, and it dawned on me that maybe we can do a different science next year and let her dual enroll for chemistry in her junior year. I'm tossing that idea around now. FWIW, she is probably not going in to a STEM field.
So here are my questions:
What are your favorite online chemistry options? I plan to look closely at the pinned chemistry post when I have time over Christmas break.
Would it be wise to postpone chemistry and try a different science for 10th grade? I was thinking an A&P but have no idea if that's a smart choice. Opinions?
Would chemistry be a good option for a first DE class?
Thanks a bunch!!

I did end up buying the Handbook for Writers because we didn't own anything like that. I agree you probably don't need it if you already own several others.

Oh it's no problem at all!!

I wish I could help, but I'm such a newbie with this. I bet Debbie can help!

I got the first two levels. I thought about getting them all and rearranging it to do Early Modern next year since that's what we're studying in history. But I decided not to make it harder on myself. LOL!
Thanks Debbie!

I decided to do EiL instead of my previous literature plan to simplify my life. :)
Do I need to add a separate writing program if I'm doing Excellence in Literature with my 9th grader? I planned to do WWS 3, but after getting my hands on EiL, I see that it's a lot of writing.
Also I have two levels of EiL and plan to mix and match modules. Is 9 a good number to do in a year or can we plan more than 9?

My daughter did The Art of Argument last year in 8th grade, and it was fantastic. I know a lot of people use it for 9th grade. HTH!

Well this will be my first year of teaching high school so I'm learning too. :) I'm planning to use the first 13 or so chapters from Tindall and about 5 or 6 from Spielvogel. I got the Spielvogel 7th edition books from Abe books for about $4.
-
I'm using the Tindall book along with Western Civ by Spielvogel. Have you seen that one?

Wow, I'm pretty shocked.
