  1. My 3 1/2 yr old LOVES doing workbooks, and she is currently working on the 'Get Ready for the Code' books...they are perfect for her, but she isn't ready for the writing practice yet...Sometimes I can convince her to skip it, other times she gets upset if she has to skip anything...She does fine with tracing, just the free formation of letters is beyond her at this point...

Anyone know of any workbooks that are like ETC without the writing?

  2. I think if done as written, it sure can.

I've picked it up and put it down a few times this year. Daughter enjoys the activities. For example, when reading a biography she made a collage of the main character which she loved. But if we did every single assignment she would be bored out of her mind. She doesn't want to spend 3 weeks reading a book she could have read in two days.

Eventually, I just made her a list of ideas and prompts and now she just keeps a reading journal. Must easier. Every day she reads her book (whatever book it is) and does something like the following...

    1. Define 5 works you found in today's reading.

    2. Describe the main character.

    3. Compare a character to yourself.

    4. Make an acrostic with a character's name, setting, etc.

    5. Create a travel brochure for the setting.

    6. Write a summary.

    7. What did you like about what you read today?

    8. If you could change the story, how would you do it?

    9. What do you think is going to happen next?

    10. Does the main character have good character? Why or why not?

    11. Does this story remind you of anything?

    12. Is there anything you want to research more about? (Reading about Louis Braille and she read up about France).

    13. Want to copy an illustration, map, or create a diagram of something described?

I could go on but this works much better in our house. She doesn't have to do something off our list (and these aren't all of them). She can come up with her own. It is just a journal. I check it about once a week just to make sure she is doing something. Otherwise, I've told her it is her book for remembering all the great books she has read.

I would love to hear more! :bigear:

  3. He will have those classes completed..(Alg 1 and 2, Bio, Eng 9, and Modern World History) by the time this year is finished...so we don't need recommendations for those. He wants to take driver's ed for an elective next year, so I don't think we need another elective...what I am looking for is some suggestions for 'easier' high school curriculums that we could choose from...He was planning to take Geometry and Chemistry, as well as American History...but I don't want to get rigorous programs for him...although he is a fast learner he just won't have the time (and chances are ambition) to do a tough class... (and he is not set on those subjects...he has waffled on taking a finance class or business math). He basically wants to go to vo tech...he is not 'into' his schoolwork at all, but knows that he needs to do it to be able to attend the school...

Sorry if I am not making much sense...

  4. DS will be starting his 10th grade year, and he has gotten accepted into our local vo tech program (something he has been wanting to do since he found out it was an option). He will be taking an electrician course there. I haven't asked about how the credits work for the program, but he will be at the vo tech school for half of the school year for his remaining high school years. I am looking for some courses that might be a little bit of a lighter load for him, knowing that he will need to complete them in half the year...

By the end of this year he will have completed High School Biology, Algebra, Algebra 2, Modern World History, as well as 9th grade LA...He is NOT a fan of writing...is a very quick to pick up a text, read it and do well on comprehension...He also learns easily from videos, and somewhat enjoys reading...

    Any ideas??

  5. While looking around today I noticed their workbooks...I couldn't believe how expensive they were!! For a Pre K workbook (with a variety of activities...about 80 pages worth) was $19.89!! It was a very 'generic' style of book...nothing fancy...Is it just me or does this seem like a bit much??

  6. My daughter was becoming increasingly frustrated with math until we found R&S. (4th) She loves it! Easy for me to teach and easy for her to understand and complete. It is set up for a classroom, but we just modify it to work (I usually don't have her copy and complete all of the problems, but if she need the extra practice it's there).

Math Mammoth is another good option, but she preferred R&S

  7. In K so far we have done:

    Books of the Bible

    Phone numbers and addresses

    The Lord's Prayer

    Continents

Weekly (or bi weekly) Bible verses

    Days of the Week

    Months of the year

How many days in each month

And some songs she picked :)

    Currently working on states

Anxiously awaiting our Living Memory book to plan out some new memorization for all of the kids...

  8. I have found some really good deals on the diaperswappers forums...they have a homeschool category. There cetainly isn't the variety that you would see here or vegsource, but occasionally there are some amazing deals!

I have been able to use paperbackbookswap for a few things, too.

    (but my favorite is here...)

  9. It's overwhelming! I've sold a TON, gave away a TON and still I have too much

And guess what? I STILL love to look at and buy books - UGH! Although I've DRASTICALLY cut back.

Anybody in the same boat? :tongue_smilie:

Definitely in the same boat here...I have such a tough time making decisions based on the very slim samples some products allow you to see online...so I have to buy them and actually look through them...then, I like to have a few things that the kids can select from, so that they can be involved in selecting their stuff from my preselections... The kids have really enjoyed what we have been using, but there has to be a better way!!
