  1. We are way off the WTM recommended history schedule, and I need some ideas what to do for my 8th grader. She is doing high school level work in all other subjects, and I think she would do well in a high school level history course, but I don't know where to 'restart'. In the last few years she has done US history, state studies, world geography. ancient history....she was going to do BF Ren and Reformation, but changed her mind when she got started...She likes literature based programs, but the books need to be really easy to get at a library, since we have very limited funds...She is not a huge fan of learning history and would like her to have a fun year...Any ideas? (ohh, and she HATES projects!! lol...more of a read it and get it done kind of girl!)
  2. We are way off the WTM recommended schedule, and I need an idea where to go from where we are. In the past few years she has done some American history (a few years ago), with a state study, Ancient history, then went to public school for a year where she did a year in geography. She was going to do Beautiful Feet Ren and Reformation (she liked the looks of it) but once she got started really disliked it. She is way above 8th grade reading level and comprehension, and is doing high school courses in LA, math, and science...So I feel like she can handle a high school history course...just really don't know what to try. She likes literature based programs, but the books must be really easy to get at a library, our funds are extremely limited...History is not a subject she has shown incredible interest in, but I want her to have a fun year...any ideas? I'm going to post in the high school forum as well...
  3. This is a very minimal possibility....but thought I would mention it just in case...have you had his vision checked recently? My dd was having the same problem, and when we had her vision checked we found out that she needed vision therapy, because her eyes weren't working together and focusing was very difficult...she's now doing much better, seems to be able to focus without as much noticeable effort...
  4. Do you know if there are any sellers in the US?
  5. Language Arts is a very strong point for my dd and she is really about bored to tears with grammar, vocabulary, and spelling...reads well above her grade level, has great comprehension, and is a great writer...She does amazingly well in those areas even when doing programs well above her grade level. She's going into eighth grade and will be studying Medieval History(BF) and Chemistry(CKE), as well as Algebra I(LOF) this year...any ideas for literature and language arts that might seem fun or interesting? Maybe something a little less textbook or worksheet-like?? I'm coming up blank for this one....
  6. I printed out the first chapter to try over the next couple of days/weeks...we can see how it goes...thanks for suggesting it...for some reason I never thought of giving it a trial run...lol
  7. Good suggestion...I think I will print out some and see if she likes it (or maybe if I like it...that's probable the case...lol)
  8. I have used CLE Math with three kids and have loved it, found it to be very easy to use and a very solid program that didn't require tons of time for either me or my student....But I bough Math Mammoth and have it sitting in my files...Never used it, it just has been sitting there... I have an upcoming first grader and a very small budget...She's a very quick learner and I'm sure she will do well with either program...any input on using CLE again and cut costs somewhere else or give Math Mammoth a whirl...anyone compare the two?? Decisions...decisions...
  9. My 3 1/2 year old lives computer games and has been doing really well with letter recognition and number recognition...any input comparing these two programs? Or recommendations for other inexpensive or free programs? He does starfall already (just the free stuff)...
  10. :iagree: We moved from R&S to CLE and my kids are doing so much better! The layout allows them to learn/reinforce in a short amount of time per day...we only use their LA and Math...
  11. Can you try some of each? For instance, keep R&S for English and Math, do reading/narrations for History and Science? Or keep R&S and limit the number of problems if they understand the concepts? For example assign only even numbered problems for the day...
  12. Sounds like my DD...I had her go through this up until it got to where her LUs picked up: http://www.clp.org/product/extra_practice_sheets_diagramming_2611 Here is the answer key: http://www.clp.org/product/extra_practice_sheets_diagramming_answer_key_2610 Once she knew what to do she has loved it...
  13. I was thinking about getting MFW for my 4yr old. She is working slowly through CLE Learn to Read program, and she has done the CLP Preschool and R&S pre k series but wants to do more. Now I'm concerned since I read the 'worst purchases' thread..MFW K was on there a good bit... I definitely need something that isn't super teacher intensive, as I have 3 others I am working with, and a baby, and studying my own college material...so time is definitely a consideration...Also, we need something that isn't crazy expensive. She knows her letters and is beginning to be confident in their sounds and doing well with CVC words... Ideas??
  14. My dds are loving CLE math and LA, but not enjoying the reading so much...any other suggestions? ODD is 10 but reads on an 8th grade reading level...and YDD is 7 and reading on a 2nd grade level... CLE is making their view of reading negative...
  15. How about Lesson Pathways? http://www.lessonpathways.com/
  16. I'm so envious!!! I am not sure I could ever have it all so organized! Great job!
  17. And I forgot to mention...she likes to do her work as independently as possible...
  18. My 10 yr old has done tons of American history, and only touched on anything else history related...so I would like to do a World History or Ancient History of some sort...but am unsure of exactly the direction she should go... She is an avid reader...doesn't mind reading textbooks or living reading books...she reads above her grade level...doesn't mind workbooks, but doesn't care to do much busywork... And we don't have a big budget for this...we can only get to a library once a week, and out library is so so as far as selection goes... Any ideas???
  19. I agree! Give it a try and see how it goes. My dd struggled so much and really was struggling in math until we used CLE. It doesn't take her long at all and she has learned so much since she started a few months ago...she now loves math..
  20. We have to have our schoolwork evaluated and my ds is in a diploma program. The evaluator decided is the material is sufficient for high school credit. Ours said that LOF is sufficient for a high school credit...and we also felt like it was enough for my ds. He is very good at math, and he didn't need any 'extras' to get it...
  21. I *think* we have our choices set for next year except in a few areas, and I am driving myself absolutely insane over these few choices!!! Here is our situation... DD entering 2nd grade: We will use CLE LA 2 and CLE Math 2 for sure (she loves these and learns very quickly using them), and most likely for Reading (but I do have some Scott Foresman books I want to look through to see which I like better)...We will do SOTW 1 and Apologia Astronomy for half the year and Anatomy for the other half. We have tons of reading books (many living books and good literature, along with readers appropriate for her to do independently). My uncertain areas are writing and spelling. She is NOT a good speller, but is a pretty strong reader. She is definitely not getting enough spelling practice with CLE. And there isn't much writing in the CLE either. There is a bit of copywork, and some handwriting practice, but not too very much of either. I have WWE and am considering it, and I have Spelling Power...is there something better? PAL writing? I am open to ideas...I can't do something that is too teacher intensive, as I have a toddler, prek, and 6th grader...plus need some time for my high schooler... DD entering 6th grade: CLE LA 5 and CLE Math finish 4 start 5 (we also supplement with math worksheets and games as this is an area where she has trouble), CLE Reading 6, Sonlight 5 (Anatomy), and SOTW 1 with Guest Hollow...TONS of living books (esp history related), and a big bunch of books for enjoyment (I don't like to do much more than have her read and ask a few questions about her reading...If I turn it into a "study" she quickly dislikes reading, so we just go with it and she loves reading)...She is an EXCELLENT speller, so I haven't been doing a formal spelling program...she loves editing other writer's works. She hasn't had any formal writing instruction...has done some copywork and not much dictation. Again, I have WWE...should I do a placement with that and start her in it? Or IEW? Writesource? Jump In? Others?? I also am thinking about adding in Latin or a foreign language but not sure about this either...And opinions about a spelling program for her? Should I start using something or just let her spelling continue to advance naturally? She tested out of the Spelling Power placement test...? And to totally top this off for some reason I have in my mind I should put them in a cyber school!! I keep thinking that they would do better with someone else picking what they should be studying, but then I talk myself out of it. Our state has several...one uses K12, another uses Lincoln Interactive, and there are a few more...but I feel like this would be more time consuming than we are used to...anyone want to talk me out of this? LOL I need help!!
