  1. I do have it at the library, I've put it on hold. So we see how that goes and maybe I can find a cheap used set also, but in the meantime at least there's the library book.. My sister in law and I have been discussing all this for the last few weeks. Can't wait to share with her!
  2. I'm trying to pick a math program besides Saxon and I think I need pre-Algebra this year. My 17yo is way behind and did Saxon pre-algebra last year (half of it) and then started on Aleks, but I'm not sure he is still getting it too well. I have a 14yo and 12yo that I would like to start in Algebra, but I think they both would need pre-algebra first since they haven't done that yet. I want to to the Foerester math with the Home Study Companion DVD's that I found, but do I need to have them do a pre-algebra course first? I was thinking of doing the Teaching Textbooks one unless someone has a better suggestion. I haven't seen or used any of these other than the sample lessons and videos that I've looked at online. HELP!! Michele in NW WA
  3. I read it the then was disgusted that I wasted that much of my life! LOL Then I watched the movie that I think I'd seen parts of before and was similarly disgusted but drawn to it at the same time. I've spent a lot of time thinking about it since then and watched the movie AGAIN, and decided I'm drawn to the story in some strange way. They are so obsessed with each other that it's the most tragic love story. I don't know what else to say, it's strange....
  4. I'm new here, I've homeschooled for alot of years (14) but I had never heard of Lial's, Forester, Jacob's so I'm really excited by all the information, I'm just wondering where the best place to get them. I saw Amazon had Lial's I think, but I can only find one place that sells the Forester's, well besides maybe if someone sells something used. Thanks Michele in NW WA
  5. Jan, I really appreciate your post, it is very helpful. My 17yo was taking the Compass test for what they call Running Start in WA state, where the hs kids can take college courses paid for by the public schools. He did really, really bad on the math part, even the little bit of Algebra he's been doing he doesn't seem to know it well enough to remember anything when it comes to a test. There's very little in the way of study questions for the compass, he did those before he went and took it and still didn't help. He also did pretty bad in the reading comp part, which was surprising, since he does better on that sort of thing usually. The part that really got me in the WTM was the books on how to outline and her whole philosophy on outlining and learning how to write papers. I could have really used those resources too help my older boys, but I still have plenty of time for the 14 and under ones. I have some ideas about focusing more on the basics for my 17yo, the outlining, grammar, algebra, some kind of history and work on one of the test prep books like SAT or ACT. I don't want to overwhelm myself with a bunch of new stuff.
  6. Thanks Kathleen, that was a touching story about your brother. I know, my dh did terrible in school then went to college later and got straight A's. All I can do now is show him what he can do to improve and explain why it's important.
  7. Enchanted with Amy Adams was so cute and funny and just a good movie, I made my dh watch an even he liked it, everyone in the family liked it!
  8. Riley, or Logan, Ashton, Jenner, Caton, Tanner, Dallin
  9. I'm new here and I just started reading wtm the last few weeks. I saw Susan at our hs conference and I was astounded at how simple she made everything. I'd bought the book a year or so ago and wanted to read it but I was always overwhelmed about what I'd *heard* about wtm. People had made it sound so complicated. Well now I feel like I've totally screwed up my kids, if only I had read this book when I first heard about it about 7-8 years ago. My oldest turned out (education wise) probably about as good as he could even if I'd done the classical education. I've been doing CM method for a lot of years and the only thing my oldest was short on was math, he's finally catching up in college. It's my 17yo and 14yo that I'm feeling pretty bad about. My 17yo is a terrible test taking, my 17, 14 ,12yo took year end testing and totally bombed in every area except reading comp or something like that. They all did worse from last year and I tried so hard to focus on the right stuff. My 17yo is way behind in math, we have been doing ALEKS for 3 months now but it didn't make a difference on the math, yet. Anyway, I guess I'm wondering what in the world I can do at this point for the 17 and 14yo? We wanted to get the 17yo into community college this fall but he bombed those tests as well. He can retake them but I don't see that making a difference at this point since he hasn't even been able to study the last few weeks because of church camp and working out of town and this week we have a family reunion and will be gone. The summer just seems to slip away so fast. I don't have unlimited time to work with my older kids because I have one 12yo with learning delays that needs extra attention plus an 8yo and 7yo that still need lots of reading training and 4yo twins that have to be watched pretty closely. My 17yo is actually interested in music (he plays guitar really well, self-taught) and he's really interested in clothing design or he said history (I was telling him he needed to think about what he wanted to do and to get a degree in something since any 4year degree was better than nothing). Of all things he said history? I was surprised. Any suggestions on what would be best to concentrate on at this point for my 17yo and 14yo. I think I can still salvage the 12yos (twins) and the younger ones with the wtm outline. THANK YOU for any advice or suggestions Michele
