Activities, Awards, Achievements, Volunteer Work, etc

Recommended Posts

DS is applying to a few science camps. Yesterday I put the finishing touches on his transcript. He also needs to include his Activities, Awards, Achievements, Volunteer Work, etc.

I don't like how my present list looks and would love to see examples of how others have put this list together, or at least describe how your list looks.

Thanks,

Carole

Carole,

Are you talking about an activities/awards document in addition to his transcript? Or are you asking how to include this on his transcript?

If it's a separate document you have in mind, my son had one of these a few years ago when he was applying to colleges. I don't have it on the internet, but I can try to describe it.

On the top front we had a heading with his name, address, school listed. Under that on the front side we listed Honors and Awards. That section was organized with major test scores first, followed by a list of awards and honors.

We titled the flip side "Extracurriculars". This incorporated all the outside activities and volunteer work, organized by topic. We put his academic extracurriculars on top (three main areas - boldface headings followed by summary lists), then his other three nonacademic ec's underneath (same formatting). We had six areas of focus on this side and it filled up a page nicely.

Kathy - who is supposed to be preparing her daughter's transcript today (also for summer program apps) but who is instead spending time on the internet avoiding the whole thing!

Presently I have this as a second page and not part of his transcript. For his transcript I have his courses grouped by subject on the far left column, and then a column for each year. To me it looks clean, easy to read. There was sufficient room to put his PSAT and AP test scores. We'll have to move that to a separate page once he has his SAT, ACT, SATII and other AP test scores.

It's just how to list the Extra stuff, the science olympiad competition with wins (25 of them), and all the other ex-curricular science stuff he does, and the speed skating team participation..... Right now it has a similar layout to the transcript page and I guess we could go with that but I'm not pleased with it yet. We have a couple days before the application has to be in.

Thanks for the idea!

In Acing the College Application Michele Hernandez does an amazing job outlining what an activity supplement can look like. My kids based their activity sheet on hers.

She divides the table up into Activity / years active / position / description.

My kids grouped their activities carefully because they ended up with several pages of activities.

BTW, I strongly recommend her book!
