Elementary Chemistry Suggestions

Recommended Posts

DD is very interested in Chemistry. Currently she enjoys watching Bill Nye and YouTube videos about it. I am interested in feeding this interest and would like to know if you have suggestions on Chemistry programs. DD is going into 2nd, but can handle more sophicated science like late elementary. I'm looking for something challenging and hands on, as this is my child who does not like formal learning and this will be done outside of the school she goes to next year.

Thames and Kosmos makes some good kits in their C line (C500, C1000, C2000, C3000 - the higher the number, the bigger/more complex the kit).

We used Ellen McHenry's The Elements, which gave a great understanding of the periodic table.

There is a YouTube channel called Periodic Table of Videos that is excellent.

We used Ellen McHenry's The Elements, some from RSO's Chemistry for grammar stage and the free resources here: middleschoolchemistry.com

I also found a local chemical supply store and bought solid sodium metal and other elements so we could do a variety of things - like put sodium in water where it starts on fire, etc.

I also sifted through the experiments here: http://www.rsc.org/ to find ones we could do at home.

Tiner's Exploring the World of Chemistry is a good supplement to Ellen McHenry as long as you are okay with an overtly Christian book. There are a few subtle Creationist references but not anything that I as a non-YEC Christian had any issues with
