  1. I'm sorry that you feel sad for her. There is really nothing to be sad about. DD is a very happy kid who spends most of her time playing what she wants with her sister whims a year younger. She has not had any homework all year and I have not really done anything with her besides encourage her to read a new book or two all year. She loves her new school, but admits it was like a repeat of 1st grade this year. I'm not trying to push her ahead of the class. I'm very individualistic about my teaching at home and the classroom. Yes, I teach Special Education, but I have a Masters degree in Gifted Education. Once DD starts doing work at home she usually enjoys it and is constantly asking for more. If she doesn't want to or fighting back I drop it.
  2. She is ahead academically, as in all year she has gotten 4 out 4 (or mastered) on her report card in most areas . She just has a few areas to shore up like addition/subtraction facts for time. Regrouping, but she showed me today that she knows how to do it (she doesn't like to). She also needs to work on spelling. I want to solidify skills because she suffers from low academic self-esteem. She's a perfectionist. She's a very complicated child, as most are. It's the end of the school year and she has always had a hard time transitioning to summer. Oh, she did do Beast Academy 2A during her free time at school.
  3. The school offers basically all day gifted programming if they qualify for both LA and Math. Her teacher made a rookie mistake by basically telling us that she would make the gifted program this year. My husband and I knew better because we are both teachers, but it leads me to believe that she will be very bored next year, as she already claims to be bored. She is resistant to doing anything academic this summer. We will be doing AHG badges and such, so I will probably have her work on the creative writing badge. We didn't do the pen pal program because I knew we would be too busy this year. This is the plan for the summer: Handwriting Without Tears 3 (remediate handwriting and teach cursive) Beast Academy 3 All About Spelling 1 (remediate spelling) Shurley English 2 (combo with sister going into 2nd) Reflex Math (solidify math facts another area of struggle) I really wish I could homeschool because she's at so many levels, but I know it's not possible right now.
  4. Ok, here is the short version. DD8 is about to finish 2nd grade at a charter school we switched her to at the beginning of the year. She tested gifted and was to start the gifted program this year at her old school. We thought the charter school would accept her gifted designation CogAT and MAP scores last year in 92nd-99th percentiles, but they did not. She was tested again this year at the charter school and failed to meet the criteria. Her CogAT scores dropped significantly and MAP scores are about the same as they were last year. This year I was unable to Afterschool a lot as We were adjusting to a new schedule with a long drive home, a new baby, and a very hectic work schedule for me. DD will stay in charter school next year, as she is much happier in school. We are going to have her tested over the summer for dyslexia (she reads at a 7th grade level, but there are still signs). We are going to start things back up this summer, but O have a feeling she is going to be very reluctant. I was just going to have her do ten minutes worth of work today and a major fit incurred. I know I need to work on spelling, handwriting, and writing. She is beginning to say she is the stupidest person ever, but doesn't want to do anything extra because she doesn't want to be the smartest. She admitted today that she didn't take CogAT or MAP seriously. If I could homeschool I would and do more unschooling/internet based for 6 months or so, but that is not an option. Does anyone have any suggestions as what to do?

  6. I'm glad someone contacted Rainbow Resource. My daughter is eager to start it. I told her we'd have to rotate curriculum so she can do all of level 2.
  7. I just picks up a copy of the TM and Student Workbook for Shurley English Level 2 for $12.25. I am excited because it is a program I have looked at for a while and wanted to try. Last year DD struggled with writing at school to the point of refusal. She is doing better this year, possibly because of the teacher. I am wanting to make sure that she has a strong foundation in writing and grammar. She seemed I interested in the idea of the jingles. If anyone has used this program I would like to hear the pros and the cons of it.
  8. I think I'm going to maybe switch between BA 2A and then do 3A. Hopefully 2B will be out by the time we are done with 3A. DD was one question away from passing the placement test for BA3. Hopefully we can get through both levels by December 2018 when DD will be in 3rd grade.
  9. I can't wait until it comes in the mail!!!!
  10. We switched her school this year and found a fabulous charter school. We are almost 3 weeks into the school year, and she is doing great. A lot of the problems we had last year are non-existent. We told her teacher before school started that we were not looking at ADHD, but GT with a possibility of OCD. We also her teacher what has worked in the past. I was upfront an honest and her teacher has had nothing but positive things to say about her. We had a little hiccup with writing last week, but by the end of the week she was doing well and what she was supposed to. I'm hoping the rest of the year goes this well. This school will go up to 12th grade within the next 5 years, so if it continues to be a good fit we are staying until graduation.
  11. I'd send a letter to the old school, but Inwork there. I've told them how she is thriving.
  12. New School Year Update: DD began her charter school a week and a half ago. She is loving it so far! She is coming home excited about school at the end of the day. It is such a change from last year. This school offers flexible seating and two recesses. It also offers a Genius Hour every day for students to work on their own projects. DD has signed up for a coding and art club at her new school. The only complaint I have heard this year is that she was a little reluctant to write on Wednesday, but by Friday she was voluntarily writing in her journal and didn't want to out it up! She was also messy with her desk this week, but that doesn't bother me too much. We have time to work on that. DD also tested as gifted over the summer, so we are waiting for services to start. The new school does not have homework, so we will have an opportunity to after school and listen to good audio books on the drive because it's 30 minutes each way. We will also be doing BA 2A when it comes out. I ordered it tonight! Younger DD was just accepted to the charter and starts on Monday. I'm super excited for this school year.
  13. You could do a class called Music at the Movies and explore how music influences movies. You could watch musicals and other movies where the music is famous. Go down rabbit trails and write some papers. If you want a good end of year project have your son create a short film and pick the music to go into it. Have him analyze why he used those particular pieces of music.
  14. Oh boy, I'm not sure I want to think about this. I have one starting school on the 16th and the other one starting school on the 21st. The school year is too close for comfort. 2nd grade - Singapore finish up 1B for review and start on 2A continuing get through 3A or 3B hopefully, Primary Math Challenge, Beast Academy 2A-D; Reflex Math, WWE1, FLL1, SOTW 1 with activities, Galloping the Globe, lots of reading, AHG activities, swim lessons, maybe dance in the spring 1st grade - Singapore 1A-2A, Primary Challenge Math, WWE1, FLL1, Reflex Math, SOTW 1 with activities, Galloping the Globe, lots of reading, AHG activities, swim lessons, maybe basketball I'm not sure what I'm going to do about science other than Bill Nye and Magic School Bus videos.
  15. We don't homeschool for monetary reasons. Our mortage and health insurance would take up all of my husband's income, so I have to work. We live well within our means in regards to living, but our health insurance would be $1,750 a month if I didn't work (we're both teachers and have the worst insurance eve). If I had family around me that didn't work and were supportive of homeschooling, I would see if they would take care of the kids while I was at work and do most of the homeschooling after hours and on the weekend.
  16. Literature recommendations are great too! They don't get to read a lot of authentic lit at school. B:-(
  17. My girls and I will be in the car a lot this next year. I'm looking for suggestions for books to listen to in the car and videos to watch. I'm currently reading Winnie the Pooh to them and they love it. They also like Bad Kitty, Princess in Black, and BabyMouse. I would like to keep the audiobooks more quality literature. Educational videos they like are Magic School Bus, Bill Nye, Ancient Civilatilns, Where In the World is Carmen SanDiego, and movies similar to that. They both atten PS school and don't spend much time on history or science. I will probably get SOTW to listen to in the car. They also like VeggieTale and Adventures in Odyssey stories. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
  18. You could try having her make trading cards of mythological creatures, create games, make videos acting out the stories, write her own mythological story, make a webpage, blog, interactive notebook, brochures, create a video game, write an informative book with illustrations, or many other things.
  19. I have the same thing going on with my DD. She's in play therapy, and her therapist said that her emotional IQ will probably meet up with her intellectual IQ when she's in her 20s. It gets better every year, but it's still rough.
  20. 5 by Sept. 1st, but you can test in if you have a birthday before Dec. 31 I believe.
  21. Wow! That's amazing. The amount of work you required is probably twice to three times the amount required in a public school AP class. That's wonderful. Most public schools have gone to reading only excerpts of major works and not writing essays to interpret them.
  22. I have found that Chrime works best for actual computers.
  23. DD is very interested in Chemistry. Currently she enjoys watching Bill Nye and YouTube videos about it. I am interested in feeding this interest and would like to know if you have suggestions on Chemistry programs. DD is going into 2nd, but can handle more sophicated science like late elementary. I'm looking for something challenging and hands on, as this is my child who does not like formal learning and this will be done outside of the school she goes to next year.
