Guest
I read several books, but it wasn't until I went through the IEW Teaching Writing: Structure and Style program that it clicked. I needed the steps broken down- otherwise it simply overwhelmed me and was too "use your judgement" and forced creativity. Having gone through that program NOW I can go back and glean a bit more from the former books, but prior to it, I was simply baffled as how to break it down to teach and not hold an 11 year old to the standards of a professional adult journal level paper output if that makes sense. There is something about IEW that feels overwhelming to me. DVDs, multiple books, I feel stressed thinking about it, but maybe I just need to break down and do it. You just start watching the DVDs and working your way through the binder. I started the summer before dd began the SWI-C, and I did the assignments as I went through and I think it helped me be a more compassionate teacher when it came to writing, because I understood the process and what she was being asked to do. That being said, if a program doesn't appeal, I definitely would NOT spend that kind of money on it. It's not cheap. It has great resale value, but you can get an awful lot of other books for the price of TWSS. If you need the scaffolding, it's a solid program, but if you aren't big on their system (and you can hear about it for free on the podcasts and free downloads from the site) overall I would save my money.
