Colleen
The weather here is so-o-o-o frustrating, I am more than ready to pack up and join WTMindy east of the mountains. She's over there, enjoying piles of lovely snow under blue skies. True "play in the snow" kinda weather. That is never our reality in this little corner of the state. Instead it goes something like this: We hope earnestly for snow that will just fall and lay on the ground, waiting for happy children to build snowmen and make snow angels. After much teasing from Mother Nature (snow flurries that melt, snow that turns to rain, etc) we finally see loads of the white stuff pouring from the heavens. Yeah! Maybe we'll have "normal" snow! No such luck. Within hours, the northeaster kicks in. White out conditions ensue. The wind chill drops to some ungodly number way below zero. The few inches of snow that fall are whipped around such that portions of ground are bare while snow drifts block other areas (like driveways). In the next phase, temperatures shoot back up and it begins raining during the day, freezing during the night and creating the Icy Driving Hazard from You Know Where. Meanwhile, the Happy Snow people smile and laugh, wondering why days like today ~ with a mere few inches of snowfall ~ call for school closures. Well, that's why. Harrumph. Got that off my chest. Now to figure out how to keep the aforementioned northeaster from blowing snow directly into the calving pens...
Elaine
That sounds downright awful! I will never again live where it is that cold again.
Heidi @ Mt Hope
Well, we had a winter wonderland here for two days, finally! Too bad my husband had the stomach flu for the first day, and my sons had it the second day. Ah, well. Maybe next year... Luckily the boys and I did a little sledding and snowman making the first day. It was the first time we were able to try out our new little hill. Worked like a charm! Colleen
The thing is, I love snow and I don't mind cold weather. What makes it so dangblasted frustrating here is the wind. It's one thing to be in the house, looking out at the lovely snow and feeling all Little House in the Big Woods-ish. It's another to be huddled around the wood stove (our heat source), feeling The Long Winter-ish. And the wind-dangerous ice combo means I can't go out and run, which as you know can drive a woman to insanity. Speaking of which (running, not insanity!;)), is NY in your future come fall?
Colleen
That's fun that you and the boys were able to enjoy the snow together, Heidi. Do you think it snowed more when you were growing up? I do. Sorry about the bout of flu, btw; I had something nasty last Friday ~ ugh! Elaine
Speaking of which (running, not insanity!;)), is NY in your future come fall? Sadly, no. I have been plagued with a knee injury and cut back running. I am gaining some momentum and an now doing about 20 miles per week. It's good enough for now, but you know us over achievers.;) Someday we must run together. :o
nancypants
A winter wonderland for me would be visiting Hawaii! LOL That would be truly wonderful! I will never ever ever complain about a lack of snow! It's cold enough here this week for exposed skin to freeze within minutes. Oh joy!
Heidi @ Mt Hope
Absolutely, it snowed more growing up. We had at least one or more 'big snows' every year. It seems like it would be a foot of snow instead of a couple inches and might stick around for as long as a week instead of an hour. I don't wish to live in Canada or any other place that deals with the snow and cold temps all winter, but it would be nice to have a week of it! Colleen
A winter wonderland for me would be visiting Hawaii! LOL That would be truly wonderful! Yeah, right about mid-February is when a Hawaii break calls my name. Now if only I could figure out a way to answer.:p It's cold enough here this week for exposed skin to freeze within minutes. Oh joy! When Hans and I first met and lived in B.C., he came up with the brilliant idea of farming in northern Alberta. (This from the guy who, unlike me, would gladly live year-round in a tropical climate.) I think, coming from Western Europe, he had this romantic notion about the wide-open prairies. Needless to say, I wasn't going in for that long-term!

Seems like it's changed drastically in just the past 20 years. Hans says the same thing is true of Switzerland. He and his siblings would ski all winter long on the little slope behind their house; that definitely wouldn't be possible these days. Most ski areas in the Alps are now relying heavily on snow-making machines.:(

It's good enough for now, but you know us over achievers.;) Oh, Laney, I'm sorry! It's so frustrating to be held back like that. I've just worked back up to 20-25 miles a week myself after a pretty dry spell. I was wiped out for a long time after a viral infection in August and when I was finally able to start running again, Hans was working 80-100 hours a week. I spent most of Oct, Nov, and Dec trying to squeeze in 3 miles here and there, kwim? Someday we must run together. :o Definitely! I'm telling you, my 50s are looking like THE decade. Only another 11 years to go!:p

WTMindy
Well, I don't mean to rub it in, but we got FIVE more inches today! It is crazy here right now. We had to push several more cars today. They shut down schools again today (which they NEVER do here). I haven't left the house (by car) since Saturday. I'm still not complaining. I am loving it!!! There is nothing worse than cold and dreary, but no snow, so I'll take the snow.

Crissy
Sorry!! I'd invite you and the boys over to play in the snow for a while, but the passes are closed! I was just thinking "I'll just go to Mindy's!" But I don't drive in the snow. I do drive in the rain. And we have plenty of that!
