LolaT
I decided to get Expedition Earth. I'm trying to decide what additional books I'm going to get. I've put these in the shopping cart so far: The Usborne Geography Encyclopedia: With Complete World Atlas Geography from A to Z: A Picture Glossary (Trophy Picture Books) Wonders of the World Coloring Book - Dover Sticker Dolly Dressing Around the World Around the World in 80 Tales Peoples of the World - Usborne (not sure if I'll like this but I looked at the more popular Children Just Like me at the library and it felt kind of outdated. If anyone has any opinions on these or other suggestions... Also considering A Life Like Mine) The other ones I'm not sure about are A Trip Around the World. Are these really worth the price? I can't see what's in them. Any feedback/suggestions appreciated.
~Kirsten~
Fun! I love book shopping! :D We did a similar thing to Expedition Earth when my oldest was in K, and next year we're going to incorporate EE into what I already have planned for my youngest. From your list, I'd say you definitely need an atlas. Also, I personally really like Around the World in 80 Tales. We didn't have it before; instead, we used The Lion Storyteller's Bedtime Book, which is also quite nice. We have Children Just Like Me and find it...okay. I haven't seen the Usborne book you're looking to buy in person, but I'm guessing you could probably substitute it for CJLM. The reviews seem to indicate you wouldn't have children from all countries, necessarily, but that's the case with the other, too. Honestly? We probably will barely crack the pages on that one this time, and I won't worry about it at all. We are going to invest in Geography from A to Z. The Dover coloring books were too detailed for my oldest at 5 (probably now, too!), but my youngest likes coloring better, and yours is a little older anyway. Just figured I'd mention it. We have one of the Trip Around the World books, and it, too, is okay. I think EE uses them for some craft ideas and some recipes, but I don't think we got or will get our money out of that purchase. It's hard to say. For what it's worth, we aimed for an eat-and-read-around-the-world approach. We check out tons of library books, mostly fictional, about the country. Last year, we spent about a month on each country. This year, with a new baby on the way and an older child doing SotW I didn't want to have to hunt down my own crafts and coloring flags and such, and I wanted a bit more structure. We probably still won't go at quite the same pace as EE, as I really love all the extra reading time together and don't want to rush it, but we'll probably do more than one per month. So, with that, you can make what you will of my suggestions. I haven't looked carefully, but it does seem like the author gives more details on her blog (for instance, one recipe wasn't included in the e-file because it's in the Trip Around the World book, but she included it in her blog entry). HTH! Have fun traveling the world together! :001_smile:

It is great but has a Peoples of the World section in it so you may find some duplicated info if you get the other book. I have the Children Just Like Me book, simply because it is scheduled in GTG which we use for world geog/cultures. The kids like it a lot, I think its maybe just us parents notice it's dated:tongue_smilie:
LolaT
From your list, I'd say you definitely need an atlas. OK. I think the Usborne Encyclopedia includes an atlas. At least that's what I've gathered from the title. Also, I personally really like Around the World in 80 Tales. Yeah, I saw this on Amazon and it looked really cute and interesting. The Dover coloring books were too detailed for my oldest at 5 (probably now, too!), but my youngest likes coloring better, and yours is a little older anyway. Yeah, I kind of think they might be too detailed for her too. She's not great at coloring. It's more the kind of thing I would love to do if I was being homeschooled ;) but I'll try it out. There might be some pages that will motivate her and give her more practice in coloring. We have one of the Trip Around the World books, and it, too, is okay. I think EE uses them for some craft ideas and some recipes, but I don't think we got or will get our money out of that purchase. It's hard to say. This or these (there are 3 of them) are the ones I'm not sure about. I might get A New Trip Around The World as it is newer (I like new stuff) and it has Chile which I think is a present day, relevant country and is usually not included in many studies I've seen. Instead, they tend to favore Peru which is maybe more historically interesting. I guess, then I'll see if the other two books are worth it. But I'd still love to see more of what's in these if anyone has used them. Thanks for all the great info. I have the Usborne Geography Encycolpedia. It is great but has a Peoples of the World section in it so you may find some duplicated info if you get the other book. That's great to know I propably don't need the other book then. Thank you!
