  1. I'm having a heck of a time developing a yearlong World/Cultural/Human Geography course for my rising 9th grader. For some reason, I thought finding high school materials would be easier than it was for earlier grades. I was wrong. There really aren't a lot of options all around. And, if you want secular/neutral, there's practically none. I've read every high school post pertaining to geography on these boards from the past 5-7 years at least three times. I've gone through Rainbow Resource's entire geography section. I've Googled. I've looked at edX, Coursera, and Saylor. These are the resources that sort of made my list. The Great Courses Understanding Cultural and Human Geography Oak Meadow's World Geography (I generally like it, but we already plan to use their Biology, so I fear it might be too much of the same.) Apologia's Around the World in 180 Days (I don't like that it's multigrade. We want straight high school. Many parts we wouldn't use.) Runkle's Geography (Too much physical geography. We want cultural/human geography. And, I'm not sure it's high-school level.) I'm on the verge of just buying Oak Meadow, but I don't really want to. Is there anything else I can pair with Understanding Cultural and Human Geography? Any other resources that I'm missing? (Online won't work for us right now unless it's completely self paced, as we have some family health issues that can potentially uproot our lives at any moment.) What I would kind of like, I think, are 4-6 great book selections and some kind of human geography project guide to pair with the lectures. I don't just want a bunch of papers to write, as we are still working our way through Writing With Skill 2. We have plenty of writing with it. I've tried Googling high school course syllabuses, but all that I find are geared toward the AP test, which DD isn't going to take. Teachers Pay Teachers wasn't much help either.
  2. I am planning on using Barb's World Geography & Cultures plans for my 9th grade daughter next year. If you haven't yet seen the syllabus, it is here: http://harmonyfinearts.org/2011/03/world-geography-for-high-school-harmony-art-moms-plans-to-download/ I'm curious if anyone else has used this and if so, what (if anything) did you add to it? There are quarterly mapping tests, but I was thinking of adding some other type of assessment.
  3. Texas edition online not complete. Student resources here http://www.glencoe.c...2003/index.php4 ETA: Adding on the "missing" chapters from Plum Crazy (#9) complete the 34 chapters.
  4. OK-- thanks to everyone for replies and suggestions to help me plan for study abroad with my three boys-- we're here in France. Here's our blog: http://theshortstrip.blogspot.fr My curriculm blog is already up, but I would have liked to have seen how others organized a similar trip/semester abroad. I guess I'll blaze the trail and you can thank me later -- unless it all goes terribly wrong, then I'll know why I couldn't find more infromation about!
  5. I ordered the novel yesterday after seeing it on a blog. My questions is about the guide. If you use it, do you think you use it to it's value ($20)? Also, if you are using it with world geography study, do you follow the order of the Sassafras book? It wouldn't make sense to change the story around, right? Then what do you do if you want to do a country not in the book? I have been using parts of EE so far. I have a 2nd grader that will love the stories, but doesn't write much, so the notebook/lapbook stuff will mostly go undone. I plan to have him do one entry a week in a nature journal with drawings and dictation. I also have a PK4 that won't need anything but good books and animal cards. Thanks!
  6. I decided to get Expedition Earth. I'm trying to decide what additional books I'm going to get. I've put these in the shopping cart so far: The Usborne Geography Encyclopedia: With Complete World Atlas Geography from A to Z: A Picture Glossary (Trophy Picture Books) Wonders of the World Coloring Book - Dover Sticker Dolly Dressing Around the World Around the World in 80 Tales Peoples of the World - Usborne (not sure if I'll like this but I looked at the more popular Children Just Like me at the library and it felt kind of outdated. If anyone has any opinions on these or other suggestions... Also considering A Life Like Mine) The other ones I'm not sure about are A Trip Around the World. Are these really worth the price? I can't see what's in them. Any feedback/suggestions appreciated.
  7. Have you seen/used DK Geography of the World (full of statistics, facts, etc--along w/ maps, of course) or World Geography (Teacher Created Materials) (mapping, activities, focus on topography, it looks like) ? :bigear: I want to make geography a separate focus (for 5th grade, but maybe throughout the logic stage). We've done the maps in SOTW AG (all of them, I think), so the kids have a decent grasp of very limited areas, if that makes sense. I'd like to have them look at things a) more broadly, in perspective, etc, & b) w/ a greater focus on the natural resources, topography, etc. I've looked at other threads on geography, & I just can't decide which way to go. It would be a 1-4 yr course. Haha--that's not too broad, eh?
  8. We've enjoyed lightly going through a geography workbook for a couple of years but are nearing an end to it. I'm looking for some sort of geography that doesn't try to be an integrated lit/history/bible/etc curriculum. Preferably something that works on maps, continents, countries, etc all in one book or curriculum. I'm considering doing it myself, but to be honest I don't really want that work right now. We're in the middle of just too much. Thoughts?
  9. http://www.visualizeworldgeography.com/catalog.html?Vl=1&Tp=2 Has anyone used this?? I'd like to buy it for my homeschool group, if you've found that it's good. Also, how long does each "lesson" take? And, the package for Geography Bees. Has anyone used this?? Any info would be Great!! Thanks! Carrie
  10. I'm not looking for an integrated program with literature, art and cross-curricula focuses. I want a nitty-gritty workbook with tons of concrete mapping activities that will teach through application. Color would be a plus but not necessary, a little bit of teaching prompts would be nice too but not completely necessary. I would like something for U.S. Geography, to learn the states and their locations as well as capitals, physical attributes (such as what states border the Mississippi River) and cultural information. We have Great States the game and the Leap Frog Explorer Smart Globe which we will use regularly. I would also like a similar product for World Geography...:001_smile: I'm not thrilled with the cost of the Trail Guides to Geography from GeoMatters in respect to what I'm looking for, there's much more projects and cross-curriculas than we need or want. What I've seen that could possibly be good is: U.S. Geography: Where in the U.S. Are You? by Carson-Dellosa World Geography: Where in the World Are You? by Carson-Dellosa or The Complete Book of Maps & Geography Grades 3-6 by School Specialty Publishing Does anyone have any other suggestions before I pursue these further and try to see them in person (having a store order them for me to preview)? Open and go is essential, we have great atlases already.
